    Introducing “CORA,” the Community of Online Research Assignments Repository

    This session will introduce CORA (Community of Online Research Assignments), a pilot open access educational resource developed for faculty and librarians in higher education. Librarians at Loyola Marymount University (LMU) received a Statewide California Electronic Library Consortium (SCELC) Project Initiatives Fund grant to create an online open access repository of user contributed research and information literacy assignments targeted to SCELC institutions. This session will cover the timeline of events during the first year of development, ending with a demo of the live online prototype. LMU faculty provided input on the characteristics of effective research assignments and the desired features in a searchable open access repository. The Cherry Hill Company was contracted to build and host a live prototype of the CORA website using Drupal, an open source content management platform . The current collection of research assignments will be extended and enriched by user contributed assignments, building a community of faculty and librarians sharing their knowledge of pedagogy, information literacy, research and writing within the landscape of higher education. All teaching resources contributed to this collection are released under an intellectual property license that permits their free use and re-purposing by other educators, allowing the assignments to be enhanced by user feedback in order to build a rich corpus of best practices. A live demo of CORA will highlight policies and procedures for acceptable use along with search capabilities, sample assignments, and teaching resources. CORA promotes and encourages the sharing of success and lessons learned so its entire community can benefit

    Three-loop QCD corrections and b-quark decays

    We present three-loop (NNNLO) corrections to the heavy-to-heavy quark transitions in the limit of equal initial and final quark masses. In analogy with the previously found NNLO corrections, the bulk of the result is due to the beta_0^2 alpha_s^3 corrections. The remaining genuine three-loop effects for the semileptonic b --> c decays are estimated to increase the decay amplitude by 0.2(2)%. The perturbative series for the heavy-heavy axial current converges very well.Comment: 5 page

    Universal Fluctuations in Correlated Systems

    The probability density function (PDF) of a global measure in a large class of highly correlated systems has been suggested to be of the same functional form. Here, we identify the analytical form of the PDF of one such measure, the order parameter in the low temperature phase of the 2D-XY model. We demonstrate that this function describes the fluctuations of global quantities in other correlated, equilibrium and non-equilibrium systems. These include a coupled rotor model, Ising and percolation models, models of forest fires, sand-piles, avalanches and granular media in a self organized critical state. We discuss the relationship with both Gaussian and extremal statistics.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure

    Finite size scaling in the 2D XY-model and generalized universality

    In recent works (BHP), a generalized universality has been proposed, linking phenomena as dissimilar as 2D magnetism and turbulence. To test these ideas, we performed a MC study of the 2D XY-model. We found that the shape of the probability distribution function for the magnetization M is non Gaussian and independent of the system size --in the range of the lattice sizes studied-- below the Kosterlitz-Thoules temperature. However, the shape of these distributions does depend on the temperature, contrarily to the BHP's claim. This behavior is successfully explained by using an extended finite-size scaling analysis and the existence of bounds for M.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures. Submitted to Phys. Rev. Lett.     Constraints on Low-Mass WIMP Interactions on 19F from PICASSO

    Recent results from the PICASSO dark matter search experiment at SNOLAB are reported. These results were obtained using a subset of 10 detectors with a total target mass of 0.72 kg of 19F and an exposure of 114 kgd. The low backgrounds in PICASSO allow recoil energy thresholds as low as 1.7 keV to be obtained which results in an increased sensitivity to interactions from Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) with masses below 10 GeV/c^2. No dark matter signal was found. Best exclusion limits in the spin dependent sector were obtained for WIMP masses of 20 GeV/c^2 with a cross section on protons of sigma_p^SD = 0.032 pb (90% C.L.). In the spin independent sector close to the low mass region of 7 GeV/c2 favoured by CoGeNT and DAMA/LIBRA, cross sections larger than sigma_p^SI = 1.41x10^-4 pb (90% C.L.) are excluded.Comment: 23 pages, 7 figures, to be published in Phys.     Background Rejection in the DMTPC Dark Matter Search Using Charge Signals

    The Dark Matter Time Projection Chamber (DMTPC) collaboration is developing low-pressure gas TPC detectors for measuring WIMP-nucleon interactions. Optical readout with CCD cameras allows for the detection for the daily modulation in the direction of the dark matter wind, while several charge readout channels allow for the measurement of additional recoil properties. In this article, we show that the addition of the charge readout analysis to the CCD allows us too obtain a statistics-limited 90% C.L. upper limit on the ee^- rejection factor of 5.6×1065.6\times10^{-6} for recoils with energies between 40 and 200 keVee_{\mathrm{ee}}. In addition, requiring coincidence between charge signals and light in the CCD reduces CCD-specific backgrounds by more than two orders of magnitude.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures.     Magnetization distribution in the transverse Ising chain with energy flux

    The zero-temperature transverse Ising chain carrying an energy flux j_E is studied with the aim of determining the nonequilibrium distribution functions, P(M_z) and P(M_x), of its transverse and longitudinal magnetizations, respectively. An exact calculation reveals that P(M_z) is a Gaussian both at j_E=0 and j_E not equal 0, and the width of the distribution decreases with increasing energy flux. The distribution of the order-parameter fluctuations, P(M_x), is evaluated numerically for spin-chains of up to 20 spins. For the equilibrium case (j_E=0), we find the expected Gaussian fluctuations away from the critical point while the critical order-parameter fluctuations are shown to be non-gaussian with a scaling function Phi(x)=Phi(M_x/)=P(M_x) strongly dependent on the boundary conditions. When j_E not equal 0, the system displays long-range, oscillating correlations but P(M_x) is a Gaussian nevertheless, and the width of the Gaussian decreases with increasing j_E. In particular, we find that, at critical transverse field, the width has a j_E^(-3/8) asymptotic in the j_E -> 0 limit.Comment: 8 pages, 5 ps figure

    Electron neutrino tagging through tertiary lepton detection

    We discuss an experimental technique aimed at tagging electron neutrinos in multi-GeV artificial sources on an event-by-event basis. It exploits in a novel manner calorimetric and tracking technologies developed in the framework of the LHC experiments and of rare kaon decay searches. The setup is suited for slow-extraction, moderate power beams and it is based on an instrumented decay tunnel equipped with tagging units that intercept secondary and tertiary leptons from the bulk of undecayed \pi^+ and protons. We show that the taggers are able to reduce the \nue contamination originating from K_e3 decays by about one order of magnitude. Only a limited suppression (~60%) is achieved for \nue produced by the decay-in-flight of muons; for low beam powers, similar performance as for K_e3 can be reached supplementing the tagging system with an instrumented beam dump.Comment: 19 pages, 7 figures; minor changes, version to appear in EPJ
