Extra polarization states of cosmological gravitational waves in alternative theories of gravity
Cosmological Gravitational Waves (GWs) are usually associated with the
transverse-traceless part of the metric perturbations in the context of the
theory of cosmological perturbations. These modes are just the usual
polarizations `+' and `x' which appear in the general relativity theory.
However, in the majority of the alternative theories of gravity, GWs can
present more than these two polarization states. In this context, the
Newman-Penrose formalism is particularly suitable for evaluating the number of
non-null GW modes. In the present work we intend to take into account these
extra polarization states for cosmological GWs in alternative theories of
gravity. As an application, we derive the dynamical equations for cosmological
GWs for two specific theories, namely, a general scalar-tensor theory which
presents four polarization states and a massive bimetric theory which is in the
most general case with six polarization states for GWs. The mathematical tool
presented here is quite general, so it can be used to study cosmological
perturbations in all metric theories of gravity.Comment: 26 pages, 1 figure. Accepted for publication in Classical and Quantum

Sleep duration and blood pressure: a longitudinal analysis from early to late adolescence
The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between sleep duration and blood pressure using a cross-sectional and longitudinal approach. As part of a population-based cohort, 1403 adolescents were evaluated at 13 and 17 years old. Sleep duration was estimated by the difference between self-reported usual bedtime and wake-up time. Blood pressure was measured using the auscultatory method. Regression coefficients (β) and respective 95% confidence intervals were computed to evaluate the association between sleep duration and blood pressure, using linear regression models adjusted for practice of sports and body mass index at 17 years old. The mean (standard deviation) sleep duration at 13 years old was 9.0 (0.76) h per day, and on average it decreased by 46 min up to 17 years old. The median (25th-75th) systolic blood pressure at 17 years old was 110.0 (103.5-119.0) mmHg in females and 114.0 (106.0-122.0)mmHg in males (P < 0.001); for diastolic blood pressure the values were 66.0 (60.0-71.0) and 69.0 (62.0-75.0) mmHg, respectively (P < 0.001). In cross-sectional analysis, at 17 years old, after adjustment, a positive association was found between sleep duration and blood pressure, significant only for systolic blood pressure among females [β = 0.730 (0.005; 1.455)]. In girls, no significant association was found between sleep duration at 13 years old and blood pressure at 17 years old, but in males an inverse association was found between sleep duration at 13 years old and blood pressure at 17 years old significant only for systolic blood pressure [β = -1.938 (-3.229; -0.647)]. This study found no association between sleep duration at 13 years old and blood pressure at 17 years old in girls, but among males an inverse association was found
Quantum state tomography and quantum logical operations in a three qubits NMR quadrupolar system
In this work, we present an implementation of quantum logic gates and
algorithms in a three effective qubits system, represented by a (I = 7/2) NMR
quadrupolar nuclei. To implement these protocols we have used the strong
modulating pulses (SMP). The various stages of each implementation were
verified by quantum state tomography (QST). It is presented here the results
for the computational base states, Toffolli logic gates, and Deutsch-Jozsa and
Grover algorithms. Also, we discuss the difficulties and advantages of
implementing such protocols using the SMP technique in quadrupolar systems.Comment: 24 pages, 8 figure
Pinning of spiral fluxons by giant screw dislocations in YBa_2Cu_3O_7 single crystals: Josephson analog of the fishtail effect
By using a highly sensitive homemade AC magnetic susceptibility technique,
the magnetic flux penetration has been measured in YBa_2Cu_3O_7 single crystals
with giant screw dislocations (having the structure of the Archimedean spirals)
exhibiting a=3 spiral turnings, the pitch b=18.7 microns and the step height
c=1.2nm (the last parameter is responsible for creation of extended weak-link
structure around the giant defects). The magnetic field applied parallel to the
surface enters winding around the weak-link regions of the screw in the form of
the so-called spiral Josephson fluxons characterized by the temperature
dependent pitch b_f(T). For a given temperature, a stabilization of the fluxon
structure occurs when b_f(T) matches b (meaning an optimal pinning by the screw
dislocations) and manifests itself as a pronounced low-field peak in the
dependence of the susceptibility on magnetic field (applied normally to the
surface) in the form resembling the high-field (Abrikosov) fishtail effect.Comment: see also http://www.jetpletters.ac.ru/ps/1886/article_28701.shtm
