    Non-trilinear chromatographic time retention-fluorescence emission data coupled to chemometric algorithms for the simultaneous determination of 10 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in the presence of interferences

    Multivariate calibration coupled to high-performance liquid chromatography-fast scanning fluorescence spectroscopy (HPLC-FSFS) was employed for the analysis of 10 selected polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), six of which correspond to heavy PAHs. The goal of the present study was the successful resolution of a system even in the presence of real interferences. Second-order HPLC-FSFS data matrices were obtained in a short time with a chromatographic system operating in isocratic mode. The difficulties in aligning chromatographic bands in complex systems, such as the ones presented here, are discussed. Two second-order calibration algorithms which do not require chromatographic alignment were selected for data processing, namely, multivariate curve resolution-alternating least-squares (MCR-ALS) and parallel factor analysis 2 (PARAFAC2). These algorithms did also achieve the second-order advantage, and therefore they were able to overcome the problem of the presence of unexpected interferences. The study was employed for the discussion of the scopes of the applied second-order chemometric tools, demonstrating the superiority of MCRALS to successfully resolve this complex system. The quality of the proposed techniques was assessed on the basis of the analytical recoveries from different types of water and olive oil samples after solid-phase extraction. The studied concentration ranges in water samples were 5.6 × 10-3-0.20 ng mL-1 for heavy PAHs and 0.036-0.80 ng mL-1 for light PAHs, while in oil samples the PAHs concentrations were 0.13-9.6 and 2.3-49.5 ng mL-1 for heavy and light PAHS, respectively.     The mass range of hot subdwarf B stars from MESA simulations

    Hot subdwarf B (sdB) stars are helium core burning stars that have lost almost their entire hydrogen envelope due to binary interaction. Their assumed canonical mass of MsdB∌0.47M⊙\rm M_{\mathrm{sdB}}\sim0.47 M_{\odot} has recently been debated given a broad range found both from observations as well as from the simulations. Here, we revise and refine the mass range for sdBs derived two decades ago with the Eggleton code, using the stellar evolution code MESA, and discuss the effects of metallicity and the inclusion of core overshooting during the main sequence. We find an excellent agreement for low-mass progenitors, up to ∌2.0M⊙\sim2.0 \rm M_{\odot}. For stars more massive than ∌2.5M⊙\sim2.5 \rm M_{\odot} we obtain a wider range of sdB masses compared to the simulations from the literature. Our MESA models for the lower metallicity predict, on average, slightly more massive sdBs. Finally, we show the results for the sdB lifetime as a function of sdB mass and discuss the effect this might have in the comparison between simulations and observational samples. This study paves the way for reproducing the observed Galactic mass distribution of sdB binaries.Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRA

    Chemical analysis of early-type stars with planets

    Aims. Our goal is to explore the chemical pattern of early-type stars with planets, searching for a possible signature of planet formation. In particular, we study a likely relation between the λ Boötis chemical pattern and the presence of giant planets. Methods. We performed a detailed abundance determination in a sample of early-type stars with and without planets via spectral synthesis. Fundamental parameters were initially estimated using Strömgren photometry or literature values and then refined by requiring excitation and ionization balances of Fe lines. We derived chemical abundances for 23 different species by fitting observed spectra with an iterative process. Synthetic spectra were calculated using the program SYNTHE together with local thermodynamic equilibrium ATLAS12 model atmospheres. We used specific opacities calculated for each star, depending on the individual composition and microturbulence velocity vmicro through the opacity sampling method. The complete chemical pattern of the stars were then compared to those of λ Boötis stars and other chemically peculiar stars. Results. We compared the chemical pattern of the stars in our sample (13 stars with planets and 24 stars without detected planets) with those of λ Boötis and other chemically peculiar stars. We have found four λ Boötis stars in our sample, two of which present planets and circumstellar disks (HR 8799 and HD 169142) and one without planets detected (HD 110058). We have also identified the first λ Boötis star orbited by a brown dwarf (ζ Del). This interesting pair, the λ Boötis star and brown dwarf, could help to test stellar formation scenarios. We found no unique chemical pattern for the group of early-type stars bearing giant planets. However, our results support, in principle, a suggested scenario in which giant planets orbiting pre-main-sequence stars possibly block the dust of the disk and result in a λ Boötis-like pattern. On the other hand, we do not find a λ Boötis pattern in different hot-Jupiter planet host stars, which does not support the idea of possible accretion from the winds of hot-Jupiters, recently proposed in the literature. As a result, other mechanisms should account for the presence of the λ Boötis pattern between main-sequence stars. Finally, we suggest that the formation of planets around λ Boötis stars, such as HR 8799 and HD 169142, is also possible through the core accretion process and not only gravitational instability.Fil: Saffe, Carlos.     Mortality from gastrointestinal congenital anomalies at 264 hospitals in 74 low-income, middle-income, and high-income countries: a multicentre, international, prospective cohort study

    Summary Background Congenital anomalies are the fifth leading cause of mortality in children younger than 5 years globally. Many gastrointestinal congenital anomalies are fatal without timely access to neonatal surgical care, but few studies have been done on these conditions in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs). We compared outcomes of the seven most common gastrointestinal congenital anomalies in low-income, middle-income, and high-income countries globally, and identified factors associated with mortality. Methods We did a multicentre, international prospective cohort study of patients younger than 16 years, presenting to hospital for the first time with oesophageal atresia, congenital diaphragmatic hernia, intestinal atresia, gastroschisis, exomphalos, anorectal malformation, and Hirschsprung’s disease. Recruitment was of consecutive patients for a minimum of 1 month between October, 2018, and April, 2019. We collected data on patient demographics, clinical status, interventions, and outcomes using the REDCap platform. Patients were followed up for 30 days after primary intervention, or 30 days after admission if they did not receive an intervention. The primary outcome was all-cause, in-hospital mortality for all conditions combined and each condition individually, stratified by country income status. We did a complete case analysis. Findings We included 3849 patients with 3975 study conditions (560 with oesophageal atresia, 448 with congenital diaphragmatic hernia, 681 with intestinal atresia, 453 with gastroschisis, 325 with exomphalos, 991 with anorectal malformation, and 517 with Hirschsprung’s disease) from 264 hospitals (89 in high-income countries, 166 in middleincome countries, and nine in low-income countries) in 74 countries. Of the 3849 patients, 2231 (58·0%) were male. Median gestational age at birth was 38 weeks (IQR 36–39) and median bodyweight at presentation was 2·8 kg (2·3–3·3). Mortality among all patients was 37 (39·8%) of 93 in low-income countries, 583 (20·4%) of 2860 in middle-income countries, and 50 (5·6%) of 896 in high-income countries (p<0·0001 between all country income groups). Gastroschisis had the greatest difference in mortality between country income strata (nine [90·0%] of ten in lowincome countries, 97 [31·9%] of 304 in middle-income countries, and two [1·4%] of 139 in high-income countries; p≀0·0001 between all country income groups). Factors significantly associated with higher mortality for all patients combined included country income status (low-income vs high-income countries, risk ratio 2·78 [95% CI 1·88–4·11], p<0·0001; middle-income vs high-income countries, 2·11 [1·59–2·79], p<0·0001), sepsis at presentation (1·20 [1·04–1·40], p=0·016), higher American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) score at primary intervention (ASA 4–5 vs ASA 1–2, 1·82 [1·40–2·35], p<0·0001; ASA 3 vs ASA 1–2, 1·58, [1·30–1·92], p<0·0001]), surgical safety checklist not used (1·39 [1·02–1·90], p=0·035), and ventilation or parenteral nutrition unavailable when needed (ventilation 1·96, [1·41–2·71], p=0·0001; parenteral nutrition 1·35, [1·05–1·74], p=0·018). Administration of parenteral nutrition (0·61, [0·47–0·79], p=0·0002) and use of a peripherally inserted central catheter (0·65 [0·50–0·86], p=0·0024) or percutaneous central line (0·69 [0·48–1·00], p=0·049) were associated with lower mortality. Interpretation Unacceptable differences in mortality exist for gastrointestinal congenital anomalies between lowincome, middle-income, and high-income countries. Improving access to quality neonatal surgical care in LMICs will be vital to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 3.2 of ending preventable deaths in neonates and children younger than 5 years by 2030

    Chemometrics-assisted fluorimetry for the rapid and selective determination of heavy polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in contaminated river waters and activated sludges

    The most concerned polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) benzo[a]pyrene, dibenz[a,h]anthracene, chrysene, benzo[b]fluoranthene, benzo[k]fluoranthene and benz[a]anthracene were simultaneously determined in the presence of other 10 interfering PAHs, applying second-order multivariate calibration to the data obtained with a flow-through optosensor interfaced to a fast-scanning spectrofluorimeter. Using a sample volume of 2.5 mL, detection limits in the range 5-115 ng L-1 were obtained in interfering samples, with a sample frequency of ca. 15 samples per hour, and with a minimum use of organic solvents, competing very favorably with chromatographic methods. The significance of this study lies in the solution of the quantitative analysis problem of six PAHs in real matrices of unknown composition. The unfolded partial least-squares/residual bilinearization (U-PLS/RBL) algorithm showed the best performance in resolving the complex studied system.Fil: Bortolato, Santiago Andres.     Excitation-emission fluorescence-kinetic third-order/four-way data: Determination of bisphenol A and nonylphenol in food-contact plastics

    The endocrine disrupting chemicals bisphenol A (BPA) and 4-nonylphenol (NP) were simultaneously quantified through third-order/four-way calibration. Excitation-emission fluorescence matrix-kinetic (EEFM-K) third-order data were generated by measuring the EEFMs of these priority xenoestrogens as a function of reaction time during their Fenton degradation. Third-order/four-way calibration notably improves the sensitivity of the method and provides the required selectivity for quantifying analytes with critically overlapped fluorescence signals. In fact, collinearity between BPA and NP emission spectra prevented their quantification using EEFM second-order data and three-way PARAFAC (parallel factor analysis); however, the addition of a third instrumental mode allowed the correct chemometric modeling with four-way PARAFAC. In this way, the compliance of KruskalŽs theorem extended to higher-order data was verified. The method was applied for the determination of the analytes in samples of different plastic materials, which are in contact with food and/or beverages. In these cases, where unmodelled constituents are present, good results for BPA were achieved with four-way PARAFAC, but the predictions for NP using this model were deficient. A better predictive capability for NP in real samples was achieved when either U-PLS/RTL (unfolded partial least-squares combined with residual trilinearization) or MCR-ALS (multivariate curve resolution with alternating least-squares) was applied for data processing, demonstrating the power of these latter models for the resolution of more complex systems.Fil: Carabajal, Maira Daniela.     Multivariate curve resolution strategy for non-quadrilinear type 4 third-order/four way liquid chromatography–excitation-emission fluorescence matrix data

    For the first time, a third-order/four-way system having instrumental modes depending on each other was experimentally generated and it was successfully resolved. Non-quadrilinear type 4 data, constituted by liquid chromatographic elution times (LC) and excitation-emission fluorescence matrices (EEFMs), were on-line measured using conventional equipment. Thus, third-order/four-way data, valuable for giving rise to highly sensitive and selective methods, were obtained minimizing significantly the experimental work and time, in comparison with the reported strategies for the acquisition of LC-EEFM data. The usefulness of MCR-ALS (multivariate curve resolution-alternating least square) for attaining reliable results from data with two mutually dependent instrumental modes, namely elution time and excitation wavelength modes, was established through the simultaneous quantitation of benz[a]anthracene, chrysene, benzo[b]fluoranthene, and benzo[a]pyrene. Limits of detection in the range 1.0–1.4 ng mL–1 were achieved for the target polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, allowing their determination in about 9 min per sample in leaves of different types of tea.Fil: Carabajal, Maira Daniela.     On-line generation of third-order liquid chromatography–excitation-emission fluorescence matrix data. Quantitation of heavy-polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons

    For the first time, third-order liquid chromatography with excitation-emission fluorescence matrix detection (LC-EEFM) data were generated on-line and chemometrically processed for the simultaneous quantitation of the heavy-polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons fluoranthene, pyrene, benz[a]anthracene, chrysene, benzo[b]fluoranthene, benzo[k]fluoranthene, benzo[a]pyrene, and dibenz[a,h]anthracene. The applied experimental strategy is very simple, and is based on the reduction of the linear flow rate by fitting a larger diameter connecting-tube between the column outlet and the fluorimetric detector. In this way, EEFMs were successfully recorded on-line, without involving a large total analysis time. Because in the studied system quadrilinearity was fulfilled, four-way parallel factor (PARAFAC) analysis was applied for data processing. The second-order advantage, which is an intrinsic property of data of at least second-order, allowed the quantification of the analytes in interfering media. Moreover, resolution of the system with a high degree of collinearity was achieved thanks to the third-order advantage. In addition to a selectivity improvement, third-order/four-way calibration increased the sensitivity, with limits of detection in the range of 0.4 − 2.9 ng mL−1. After a solid-phase extraction procedure with C18 membranes, considerably lower concentrations (between 0.033–2.70 ng mL−1) were determined in real waters, with most recoveries in the range 90–106%.Fil: Carabajal, Maira Daniela.     Rol de los Comentarios Escritos en la construcciĂłn de la tesis desde la perspectiva de estudiantes tesistas y profesores guĂ­as

    The characterization of the thesis as a written product has been the contribution of several studies. However, progress is needed in understanding how this academic genre has been gradually generated. In this regard, it is known that the elaboration of a thesis involves an academic expert who guides and directs a novice writer or a group of them through various forms of feedback. This article focuses on the written comments in order to understand their roles in the process of elaboration of a thesis, from the perspective of those participants. With this objective, a phenomenological research was implemented based on in-depth interviews to 5 thesis supervisors and 6 thesis students in the process of obtaining their academic degrees of Bachelor in Education in Teaching Programs in two universities in ConcepciĂłn (Chile). The analysis shows that supervisors’ comments are part of a feedback circle oriented to adjusting students’ writing to the thesis genre, which is valued by all participants.Diversos estudios han caracterizado la tesis como producto escrito. Sin embargo, es necesario avanzar en el conocimiento de cĂłmo se gesta gradualmente dicho gĂ©nero acadĂ©mico. Con este propĂłsito, en este artĂ­culo presentamos una investigaciĂłn fenomenolĂłgica sobre el rol de los comentarios escritos en el proceso de elaboraciĂłn de la tesis. El estudio se basĂł en entrevistas en profundidad a 5 directores de tesis y 6 estudiantes tesistas de carreras de PedagogĂ­a pertenecientes a dos universidades de la ciudad de ConcepciĂłn (Chile).
