    Revisiting John Locke for Thinking About the Global Age: Knowledge, Politics, Religion, and Education

    Theme of this text: importance of John Locke´s thought, British empiricist philosopher, concerning knowledge, politics, religion and education in global age. Question one searches for answering: nowadays, in global age, why is a thinker like John Locke still so important in order to support reflections about epistemological, political, religious and educational questions? Kind of research reported is a theoretical approach. Discourse development has followed these steps: first, considerations about his theory of knowledge; second, approaches concerning his political theory; third, reflections under his ideas on religion; fourth, discussions concerning his thoughts over education. Results of this inquiry: he is one of the most eminent theorists of experience and it is essential to build knowledge; therefore, his thought must not be neglected; he is also very important to reflect about natural rights of mankind, which must be granted by Commonwealth; his ideas over toleration, which reinforce distinction between Church and Commonwealth, are still useful to think about how to deal with several religious beliefs and political opinions; his educational thought outlines that education is a psychophysical process that must equally treat both body and soul. Then, he must be recommended and also revisited in order to think about present global age

    Seismic Risk Assessment of the Thin and Lightly Reinforced Concrete Wall Building System

    La construcción industrializada de edificios de muros delgados de concreto reforzado es una práctica de construcción común en el norte de Sudamérica. En Colombia, estos muros suelen tener espesores entre 80 y 150 mm, bajas cuantías de refuerzo (ρl < 0,4%) en forma de mallas electrosoldadas trefiladas en frío y baja carga axial (P ≤ 0,10f'cAg). Hasta ahora, no ha habido eventos sísmicos importantes en la región que hayan puesto a prueba el desempeño estructural de estos sistemas. Sin embargo, recientes pruebas experimentales sugieren que los muros con espesores reducidos tienen una capacidad de ductilidad limitada y un desempeño inferior al esperado según el reglamento colombiano NSR-10. Este estudio presenta una metodología para evaluar el riesgo sísmico de arquetipos de edificios de muros delgados mediante análisis dinámicos no lineales consistentes con la amenaza de la zona. Se presenta un caso de estudio con características geométricas y configuración de refuerzo compatibles con la tipología de construcción colombiana en zonas de amenaza sísmica alta. La respuesta sísmica de las estructuras se evalúa en términos de capacidad de deformación y demanda local (a nivel de sección de los elementos) y global (comportamiento general de la estructura) en el rango inelástico. Los resultados del análisis se utilizan para desarrollar curvas de fragilidad y cuantificar la vulnerabilidad y el riesgo sísmico de edificios construidos con este sistema. Los resultados indican que las estructuras de muros delgados son vulnerables a altas demandas sísmicas, pero esto no se traduce necesariamente en altas tasas de excedencia de estados límites.MaestríaMagister en Ingeniería Civi

    A general lineability criterion for complements of vector spaces

    In 1931, Banach proved that, far from being exceptional objects, the Weierstrass functions form a residual set in the space C[0,1]\mathcal{C}[0,1] of continuous functions. Later on, in 1966, V. I. Gurariy showed that, except for zero, there is an infinite-dimensional linear subspace of Weierstrass functions. This was the first example of \textit{lineability}. Over the last decade, this topic has attracted the continuous attention of the mathematical community, with a steady stream of papers being published, many of them in highly ranked mathematical journals. Several lineability criteria are known and applied to specific topological vector spaces. To paraphrase L. Bernal-Gonz\'alez and M. O. Cabrera in [J. Funct. Anal. \textbf{266} (2014), 3997-4025], ``sometimes, such criteria furnish unified proofs of a number of scattered results in the related literature''.     Reproducibility of the lactate minimum test in wistar rats after training at the maximal lactate steady state intensity

    The aim of this study was to verify the reproducibility of the lactate minim (LM) test after four weeks of aerobic training, as well as its validity with the maximal lactate steady state (MLSS) in Wistar rats submitted to swimming exercise. Ten rats with 90 days were used. The aerobic and anaerobic capacity was determined by the LM test before and after the training. The protocol of MLSS was also applied before and after the training. Training was accomplished for four weeks, being the first two weeks with a volume of 30 minutes and the other two weeks with a volume of 45 minutes, both in the intensity of MLSS. With the training, the intensity of LM and the concentration of LM [Lac] increased of 16.19±1.87 to 18.84 ± 0.96 g and of 3.58±1.78 to 5.42±1.13 mmol/L, respectively. The intensity of MLSS increased of 18.64±1.75 to 19.97±2.15 g. The intensity of LM and MLSS in the pre and post-training phase presented high correlations (r=0.92) and (r=0.87), respectively. It was concluded that the LM test presented sensibility to the effects of the training, as well as validity with gold standard test (MLSS) in rats submitted to swimming exercise

Carcinomas in the TDC are extremely rare and are usually an incidental finding after the Sistrunk procedure. In this report, an unusual case of a 36-year-old woman with concurrent papillary thyroid carcinoma arising in the TDC and on the thyroid gland is presented, followed by a discussion of the controversies surrounding the possible origins of a papillary carcinoma in the TDC, as well as the current management options

    Being a professor and researcher during the COVID-19 pandemic

    Ser professor(a) e pesquisador(a) durante a pandemia da COVID-19 Com a pandemia da COVID-19 e a necessidade de seguir protocolos de saúde baseados nas diretrizes da Organização Mundial de Saúde (OMS), a maioria dos professores e pesquisadores começaram a conduzir suas atividades no formato “home office”. Entretanto, esses profissionais começaram a desenvolver as suas atividades em um espaço de trabalho muitas vezes improvisado - muitos deles tendo também que conciliar a vida pessoal, como cuidar de filhos, bem como outras tarefas, como as domésticas. Além disso, observou-se um declínio no desempenho dos estudantes com o ensino remoto, uma vez que a duração das aulas foi reduzida e eles não tiveram acesso a laboratórios para aulas práticas, por exemplo. Em nossa opinião, essas novas experiências mudaram significativamente nossas rotinas, nossa relação com o trabalho, nossa vida profissional, pessoal e interpessoal, e acreditamos que essas mudanças serão irreversíveis. We have even observed a decline in student performance with remote teaching, as class duration reduced and students lacked access to laboratories for practical classes. In our view, if the Brazilian government does not invest in improving the quality of remote education and internet access for the population amid the ongoing pandemic, an increasing number of teachers and researchers will develop irreversible health problems due to the precariousness of remote teaching and work. Además, se observó un descenso en el rendimiento de los estudiantes con la enseñanza a distancia, ya que se redujo la duración de las clases y no tuvieron acceso a la mayoría de los laboratorios, por ejemplo. En nuestra opinión, si el gobierno brasileño no invierte en mejorar la calidad de la enseñanza a distancia y el acceso a Internet de la población en medio de la pandemia en curso, un número creciente de profesores e investigadores desarrollará problemas de salud irreversibles debido a la precariedad de la enseñanza y el trabajo a distancia.
