    Political Management of Islamic Fundamentalism

This article attempts to explain why and how the Indian state has been successful in managing the militant form of Islamic fundamentalism in India, despite favourable internal and external conditions for such militancy. Internally, it includes such factors as the relative material and cultural deprivation of Indian Muslims, the context of Hindutava and the communal riots, and externally, the Islamic radical movements abroad. Varied literatures have emphasized these factors for the growth of Islamic fundamentalism and Islamic militancy across the Muslim world. However, India has not witnessed large-scale Islamic militancy, despite the growth in Islamic fundamentalist organizations. The article offers a theoretical perspective that takes into consideration the interplay of the nation-building process, the constitutional framework of minority rights, the doctrine of Indian secularism, and the democratic political process. This interplay explains the absence of large-scale militancy and violence, either on the part of Islamic fundamentalist groups/institutions or the Muslim population in India

Natural Killer Cells Interaction with Carbon Nanoparticles

    Get PDF
The increased use of nanomaterials for biomedical purposes has warranted the need to introspect their toxicological properties and assess their utility to human health, particularly the immune system. Natural killer (NK) cells hold a pivotal position in innate immunity and serve as first line of defense against foreign bodies. Acid functionalized Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) that easily polydisperse in aqueous solution and could be coupled with fluorescent molecules were used to study the effect of carbon nanoparticles on NK cells in vitro and in vivo. Flow cytometry-based assays were used to study the effect of CNTs on various physiological parameters of NK cells, such as cell recovery, apoptosis, cell cycle, and generation of reactive oxygen species. A downregulation of the cytotoxicity of IL-2-activated murine NK cells was observed in the presence of acid-functionalized CNTs. The mechanistic basis of this downregulation was studied by assessing markers of NK cell activation (CD69), generation (NLK1.1), degranulation (CD107a) and apoptosis (annexin V assay). This chapter provides a blueprint for assessing the effect of carbon nanoparticles on NK cells. The assays mentioned in this chapter can be extrapolated to study the effect of other nanoparticles on different cell types as well

Recent Trend of Nanotechnology Applications to Improve Bio-accessibility of Lycopene by Nanocarrier: A Review

Lycopene, rich in red, yellow, or orange-colored fruits and vegetables, is the most potent antioxidant among the other carotenoids available in human blood plasma. It is evident that regular lycopene intake can prevent chronic diseases like cardiovascular diseases, type-2 diabetes, hypertension, kidney diseases and cancer. However, thermal processing, light, oxygen, and enzymes in gastrointestinal tract (GIT) compromise the bioaccessibility and bioavailability of lycopene ingested through diet. Nanoencapsulation provides a potential platform to prevent lycopene from light, air oxygen, thermal processing and enzymatic activity of the human digestive system. Physicochemical properties evidenced to be the potential indicator for determining the bioaccessibility of encapsulated bioactive compounds like lycopene. By manipulating the size or hydrodynamic diameter, zeta potential value or stability, polydispersity index or homogeneity and functional activity or retention of antioxidant properties observed to be the most prominent physicochemical properties to evaluate beneficial effect of implementation of nanotechnology on bioaccessibility study. Moreover, the molecular mechanism of the bioavailability of nanoparticles is not yet to be understood due to lack of comprehensive design to identify nanoparticles' behaviors if ingested through oral route as functional food ingredients. This review paper aims to study and leverage existing techniques about how nanotechnology can be used and verified to identify the bioaccessibility of lycopene before using it as a functional food ingredient for therapeutic treatments

Classification of Image using Convolutional Neural Network (CNN)

    Get PDF
Computer vision is concerned with the automatic extraction, analysis, and understanding of useful information from a single image or a sequence of images. We have used Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) in automatic image classification systems. In most cases, we utilize the features from the top layer of the CNN for classification; however, those features may not contain enough useful information to predict an image correctly. In some cases, features from the lower layer carry more discriminative power than those from the top. Therefore, applying features from a specific layer only to classification seems to be a process that does not utilize learned CNN2019;s potential discriminant power to its full extent. Because of this property we are in need of fusion of features from multiple layers. We want to create a model with multiple layers that will be able to recognize and classify the images. We want to complete our model by using the concepts of Convolutional Neural Network and CIFAR-10 dataset. Moreover, we will show how MatConvNet can be used to implement our model with CPU training as well as less training time. The objective of our work is to learn and practically apply the concepts of Convolutional Neural Network
