Kovacs-like memory effect in athermal systems: linear response analysis
We analyse the emergence of Kovacs-like memory effects in athermal systems
within the linear response regime. This is done by starting from both the
master equation for the probability distribution and the equations for the
physically relevant moments. The general results are applied to a general class
of models with conserved momentum and non-conserved energy. Our theoretical
predictions, obtained within the first Sonine approximation, show an excellent
agreement with the numerical results.Comment: 18 pages, 6 figures; submitted to the special issue of the journal

Lattice models for granular-like velocity fields: Hydrodynamic limit
A recently introduced model describing -on a 1d lattice- the velocity field
of a granular fluid is discussed in detail. The dynamics of the velocity field
occurs through next-neighbours inelastic collisions which conserve momentum but
dissipate energy. The dynamics can be described by a stochastic equation in
full phase space, or through the corresponding Master Equation for the time
evolution of the probability distribution. In the hydrodynamic limit, equations
for the average velocity and temperature fields with fluctuating currents are
derived, which are analogous to those of granular fluids when restricted to the
shear modes. Therefore, the homogeneous cooling state, with its linear
instability, and other relevant regimes such as the uniform shear flow and the
Couette flow states are described. The evolution in time and space of the
single particle probability distribution, in all those regimes, is also
discussed, showing that the local equilibrium is not valid in general. The
noise for the momentum and energy currents, which are correlated, are white and
Gaussian. The same is true for the noise of the energy sink, which is usually
negligible

Particle interactions mediated by dynamical networks: assessment of macroscopic descriptions
We provide a numerical study of the macroscopic model of [3] derived from an
agent-based model for a system of particles interacting through a dynamical
network of links. Assuming that the network remodelling process is very fast,
the macroscopic model takes the form of a single aggregation diffusion equation
for the density of particles. The theoretical study of the macroscopic model
gives precise criteria for the phase transitions of the steady states, and in
the 1-dimensional case, we show numerically that the stationary solutions of
the microscopic model undergo the same phase transitions and bifurcation types
as the macroscopic model. In the 2-dimensional case, we show that the numerical
simulations of the macroscopic model are in excellent agreement with the
predicted theoretical values. This study provides a partial validation of the
formal derivation of the macroscopic model from a microscopic formulation and
shows that the former is a consistent approximation of an underlying particle
dynamics, making it a powerful tool for the modelling of dynamical networks at
a large scale
Nanocátalysts for oxygen removal from biomass derived biofuel
The use of bio-energy as a renewable alternative to fossil fuels is nowadays attracting more and more attention. Bio-fuel from biomass seems to be a potential energy substitute for fossil fuels since it is a renewable resource that could contribute to sustainable development and global environmental preservation and it appears to have significant economic potential. Liquid fuels can be obtained from fast pyrolysis of lignocellulosic biomass, where fast pyrolysis is a promising route because the process takes place at moderate temperatures, in absence of air and with a short hot vapor residence time. However, these liquid fuels have poor quality due to their low volatility, high viscosity, low heating value, a high oxygen content and poor chemical stability. This high oxygen is due to the presence of oxygen-containing compounds such as alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, furans and phenols. In this sense, catalytic hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) is one the most efficient processes to remove oxygen from these liquid fuels. In this context, the catalyst design is of upmost importance to achieve a high degree of deoxygenation, and bifunctional catalysts are required to achieve high degrees of activity. Noble metal and non-noble metal based catalysts will be evaluated in HDO of model molecules in order to get further insight about the important role of the active phase. Transition metal phosphides have shown excellent catalytic performances due to their good hydrogen transfer properties that diminishes the amount of metal exposed, avoiding, as much as possible, the deactivation, and modifies the electronic density of the catalyst leading to solids that favors the HDO. In addition these phosphides show bifunctional catalytic properties (metallic sites for hydrogenation and acid sites for cracking, methyl transfer reaction, dehydration and isomerization).Universidad de Málaga. Global stability and H theorem in lattice models with nonconservative interactions
In kinetic theory, a system is usually described by its one-particle distribution function f (r,v,t), such that
f (r,v,t)drdv is the fraction of particles with positions and velocities in the intervals (r,r + dr) and (v,v + dv),
respectively. Therein, global stability and the possible existence of an associated Lyapunov function or H theorem
are open problems when nonconservative interactions are present, as in granular fluids. Here, we address this
issue in the framework of a lattice model for granularlike velocity fields. For a quite general driving mechanism,
including both boundary and bulk driving, we show that the steady state reached by the system in the long-time
limit is globally stable. This is done by proving analytically that a certain H functional is nonincreasing in
the long-time limit. Moreover, for a quite general energy injection mechanism, we are able to demonstrate that
the proposed H functional is nonincreasing for all times. Also, we put forward a proof that clearly illustrates
why the “classical” Boltzmann functional HB[f ] = dr dvf (r,v,t) ln f (r,v,t) is inadequate for systems with
nonconservative interactions. This is done not only for the simplified kinetic description that holds in the lattice
models analyzed here but also for a general kinetic equation, like Boltzmann’s or Enskog’s
Asymptotic L1-decay of solutions of the porous medium equation to self-similarity
We consider the flow of gas in an N -dimensional porous medium with initial density v0 (x) ≥ 0. The density v(x, t) then satisfies the nonlinear degenerate parabolic equation vt = ∆v m where m > 1 is a physical constant. Assuming that (1 + , t). We prove that the L1 -distance decays at a rate t 1/((N+2)m−N) . Moreover, if N = 1, we obtain an explicit time decay for the L∞ distance at a suboptimal rate. The method we use is based on recent results we obtained for the Fokker-Planck equation [2], [3]
Improving the activity of gold nanoparticles for the water-gas shift reaction using TiO2–Y2O3: an example of catalyst design
In the last ten years, there has been an acceleration in the pace at which new catalysts for the watergas
shift reaction are designed and synthesized. Pt-based catalysts remain the best solution when only
activity is considered. However, cost, operation temperature, and deactivation phenomena are important
variables when these catalysts are scaled in industry. Here, a new catalyst, Au/TiO2–Y2O3, is presented
as an alternative to the less selective Pt/oxide systems. Experimental and theoretical techniques are
combined to design, synthesize, characterize and analyze the performance of this system. The mixed
oxide demonstrates a synergistic effect, improving the activity of the catalyst not only at large-to-medium
temperatures but also at low temperatures. This effect is related to the homogeneous dispersion of the
vacancies that act both as nucleation centers for smaller and more active gold nanoparticles and as
dissociation sites for water molecules. The calculated reaction path points to carboxyl formation as the
rate-limiting step with an activation energy of 6.9 kcal mol 1, which is in quantitative agreement with
experimental measurements and, to the best of our knowledge, it is the lowest activation energy
reported for the water-gas shift reaction. This discovery demonstrates the importance of combining
experimental and theoretical techniques to model and understand catalytic processes and opens the
door to new improvements to reduce the operating temperature and the deactivation of the catalyst.Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad (CTQ2015-64669-P and ENE2015-66975- C3-2-R)Junta de Andalucía (FQM-132 and TEP-106)European Union (HT-PHOTO-DB No. 752608
