    Skyline Operators for Document Spanners

    When extracting a relation of spans (intervals) from a text document, a common practice is to filter out tuples of the relation that are deemed dominated by others. The domination rule is defined as a partial order that varies along different systems and tasks. For example, we may state that a tuple is dominated by tuples which extend it by assigning additional attributes, or assigning larger intervals. The result of filtering the relation would then be the skyline according to this partial order. As this filtering may remove most of the extracted tuples, we study whether we can improve the performance of the extraction by compiling the domination rule into the extractor. To this aim, we introduce the skyline operator for declarative information extraction tasks expressed as document spanners. We show that this operator can be expressed via regular operations when the domination partial order can itself be expressed as a regular spanner, which covers several natural domination rules. Yet, we show that the skyline operator incurs a computational cost (under combined complexity). First, there are cases where the operator requires an exponential blowup on the number of states needed to represent the spanner as a sequential variable-set automaton. Second, the evaluation may become computationally hard.     Phosphoproteomic analysis identifies supervillin as an ERK3 substrate regulating cytokinesis and cell ploidy

    Extracellular signal-regulated kinase 3 (ERK3) is a poorly characterized member of the mitogen-activated protein (MAP) kinase family. Functional analysis of the ERK3 signaling pathway has been hampered by a lack of knowledge about the substrates and downstream effectors of the kinase. Here, we used large-scale quantitative phosphoproteomics and targeted gene silencing to identify direct ERK3 substrates and gain insight into its cellular functions. Detailed validation of one candidate substrate identified the gelsolin/villin family member supervillin (SVIL) as a bona fide ERK3 substrate. We show that ERK3 phosphorylates SVIL on Ser245 to regulate myosin II activation and cytokinesis completion in dividing cells. Depletion of SVIL or ERK3 leads to increased cytokinesis failure and multinucleation, a phenotype rescued by wild type SVIL but not by the non-phosphorylatable S245A mutant.     Thermal conductivity of InAs quantum dot stacks using AlAs strain compensating layers on InP substrate

    International audienceThe growth and thermal conductivity of InAs quantum dot (QD) stacks embedded in GaInAs matrix with AlAs compensating layers deposited on (1 1 3)B InP substrate are presented. The effect of the strain compensating AlAs layer is demonstrated through Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) and X-ray diffraction structural analysis. The thermal conductivity (2.7 W/m K at 300 K) measured by the 3ω method reveals to be clearly reduced in comparison with a bulk InGaAs layer (5 W/m K). In addition, the thermal conductivity measurements of S doped InP substrates and the SiN insulating layer used in the 3ω method in the 20-200 °C range are also presented. An empirical law is proposed for the S doped InP substrate, which slightly differs from previously presented results

    New techniques for wound management: A systematic review of their role in the management of chronic wounds

    International audienceDebridement is a crucial component of wound management. Recent technologies such as hydrosurgery (Versajet), ultrasound therapy (the MIST therapy device), or plasma-mediated bipolar radio-frequency ablation therapy (Coblation) seem to represent interesting alternatives for wound debridement. The purpose of this systematic review was to describe, evaluate, and compare these three recently developed methods for the management of chronic wounds. In January 2016, an electronic database search was conducted of MEDLINE, PubMed Central, and Embase for articles concerning these three innovative methods for the management of chronic wounds. A total of 389 references were identified by our search strategy, and 15 articles were included. We extracted data regarding the number and age of patients, indications, operating time, number of procedures, costs, wound healing time, decrease in exudation, perioperative blood loss, bacterial load, and the occurrence of complications. The 15 articles included studies that involved 563 patients who underwent hydrosurgery (7 studies), ultrasound therapy (6 studies), or Coblation (2 studies). Six randomized controlled trials were included that compared the use of a scalpel or curette to hydrosurgery (2 studies) or ultrasound therapy (6 studies). Hydrosurgery, in addition to being a very precise and selective tool, allows significantly faster debridement. Ultrasound therapy provides a significant reduction of exudation, and improves the wound healing time. No comparative study dedicated to Coblation was identified. Despite the obvious clinical interest of the topic, our review of the current literature revealed a lack of prospective randomized studies comparing these devices with each other or with standard techniques, particularly for Coblation and hydrosurgery

    The obscure events contributing to the evolution of an incipient sex chromosome in Populus: a retrospective working hypothesis

    Genetic determination of gender is a fundamental developmental and evolutionary process in plants. Although it appears that dioecy in [i]Populus[/i] is genetically controlled, the precise gender-determining systems remain unclear. The recently released second draft assembly and annotated gene set of the [i]Populus[/i] genome provided an opportunity to revisit this topic. We hypothesized that over evolutionary time, selective pressure has reformed the genome structure and gene composition in the peritelomeric region of the chromosome XIX, which has resulted in a distinctive genome structure and cluster of genes contributing to gender determination in [i]Populus trichocarpa[/i]. Multiple lines of evidence support this working hypothesis. First, the peritelomeric region of the chromosome XIX contains significantly fewer single nucleotide polymorphisms than the rest of [i]Populus[/i] genome and has a distinct evolutionary history. Second, the peritelomeric end of chromosome XIX contains the largest cluster of the nucleotide-binding site–leucine-rich repeat (NBS–LRR) class of disease resistance genes in the entire [i]Populus[/i] genome. Third, there is a high occurrence of small microRNAs on chromosome XIX, which is coincident to the region containing the putative gender-determining locus and the major cluster of NBS–LRR genes. Further, by analyzing the metabolomic profiles of floral bud in male and female [i]Populus[/i] trees using a gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, we found that there are gender-specific accumulations of phenolic glycosides. Taken together, these findings led to the hypothesis that resistance to and regulation of a floral pathogen and gender determination coevolved, and that these events triggered the emergence of a nascent sex chromosome. Further studies of chromosome XIX will provide new insights into the genetic control of gender determination in [i]Populus[/i]
