    Classically an argument terminates when the parties involved agree to the truth of a proposition known as the claim. On Gilbert\u27s model of multi-model argumentation this approach is inadequate since a claim as such does not exist except as a logical artifact or abbreviation. In its place one must consider a position, an object that contains within it much more information than can be found in an individual statement. While this adds a greater amount of complexity, it has the advantage of more ac curately describing the workings of marketplace argumentation

    Static and dynamic aeroelastic characterization of an aerodynamically heated generic hypersonic aircraft configuration

    This work-in-progress presentation describes an ongoing research activity at the NASA Langley Research Center to develop analytical methods for the prediction of aerothermoelastic stability of hypersonic aircraft including active control systems. The objectives of this research include application of aerothermal loads to the structural finite element model, determination of the thermal effects on flutter, and assessment of active controls technology applied to overcome any potential adverse aeroelastic stability or response problems due to aerodynamic heating- namely flutter suppression and ride quality improvement. For this study, a generic hypersonic aircraft configuration was selected which incorporates wing flaps, ailerons and all-moveable fins to be used for active control purposes. The active control systems would use onboard sensors in a feedback loop through the aircraft flight control computers to move the surfaces for improved structural dynamic response as the aircraft encounters atmospheric turbulence

    2.5 ampere DC solid state power controller

    The 2.5 Ampere DC Power Controller presented in this paper is a device which combines the properties of both relays and circuit breakers solely by means of solid state circuitry to perform the power functions that (1) provide DC power to electrical loads by means of power transistor switching, and (2) provide electrical protection by generating trip out characteristics similar to those of thermal circuit breakers. Furthermore, the control of this device is completely computer compatible, i.e., it is commandable from digital logic levels. The text of this report discusses the requirements, specifications, and design of this power controller. In addition, performance results obtained from the breadboard prototype when controlling resistive, capacitive, inductive, lamp, and motor loads at various temperatures and bus voltage levels are illustrated. These results are then reviewed, providing insight to the special problems associated with remote DC power switching and control of each of these loads --Abstract, page iii

    Succession planning relating to the Millennial generation in private four-year universities

    The workplace is in a transition with age demographics (Mann, 2006). The baby boomers, once a large and dominating force in the workplace are now in their initial years of a decade’s move into retirement. And with such a large demographic change, there is a vacuum that is created and then filled. Many industry analysts have deemed this transition as the Great shift change. In the workplace, vacancies are being created en mass at the managerial and executive levels. Due to the recession of 2008-2012, the baby boomers remained in the marketplace for an extended period of time, some say to rebound with their depleted retirements. As the economy made its way back to normalcy, an intersection of market forces hit. This collision of market forces is the emergence of an economy out of recession and an age demographic beginning an advanced pace of retirements that analysts say will last up to 20 years. Due to a high turnover of the baby boomer generation with the Millennial generation in the market, succession planning is key to maintain productivity and smooth the transition in demographics while providing services to increasing student populations. This dissertation will utilize case studies to analyze this market event and see how private higher education institutions located in Los Angeles, California are handling succession planning in an aggressive employment demographic change

    Active control of aerothermoelastic effects for a conceptual hypersonic aircraft

    Procedures for and results of aeroservothermoelastic studies are described. The objectives of these studies were to develop the necessary procedures for performing an aeroelastic analysis of an aerodynamically heated vehicle and to analyze a configuration in the classical cold state and in a hot state. Major tasks include the development of the structural and aerodynamic models, open loop analyses, design of active control laws for improving dynamic responses and analyses of the closed loop vehicles. The analyses performed focused on flutter speed calculations, short period eigenvalue trends and statistical analyses of the vehicle response to controls and turbulence. Improving the ride quality of the vehicle and raising the flutter boundary of the aerodynamically-heated vehicle up to that of the cold vehicle were the objectives of the control law design investigations

    A Tone-Aided/Dual Vestigial Sideband (TA/DVSB) system for mobile satellite channels

    Tone-aided modulation is one way of combatting the effects of multipath fading and Doppler frequency shifts. A new tone-aided modulation format for M-ary phase-shift keyed signals (MPSK) is discussed. A spectral null for the placement of the tone is created in the center of the MPSK signal by translating the upper sideband upwards in frequency by the same amount. The key element of the system is the algorithm for recombining the data sidebands in the receiver, a function that is performed by a specialized phase-locked loop (PLL). The system structure is discussed and simulation results showing the PLL acquisition performance are presented

    Our design team was supplied with a dozen architectural designs from the students of the Roger Williams University Architectural School. After discussing the strengths and weaknesses of each our team was able to narrow our choices down to one base design to conduct our feasibility and structural integrity analysis. Currently, the structural integrity of the proposed building addition has been examined by determining the wind and the snow loads, the green roof requirements, and the column and beam loads. The feasibility of the chosen design was assessed by researching Bristol zoning regulations and developing a path through the required zoning variances, which will help in the construction phase
