    On a new theoretical calibration of the Stroemgren hk metallicity index: NGC6522 as a first test case

    We present a new theoretical calibration of the Stroemgren metallicity index hk by using alpha-enhanced evolutionary models transformed into the observational plane by using atmosphere models with the same chemical mixture. We apply the new Metallicity--Index--Color (MIC) relations to a sample of 85 field red giants (RGs) and find that the difference between photometric estimates and spectroscopic measurements is on average smaller than 0.1 dex with a dispersion of sigma = 0.19 dex. The outcome is the same if we apply the MIC relations to a sample of eight RGs in the bulge globular cluster NGC6522, but the standard deviation ranges from 0.26 (hk, v-y) to 0.49 (hk, u-y). The difference is mainly caused by a difference in photometric accuracy. The new MIC relations based on the (Ca-y) color provide metallicities systematically more metal-rich than the spectroscopic ones. We found that the Ca-band is affected by Ca abundance and possibly by chromospheric activity.Comment: Accepted for publication on The Astrophysical Journal Letter

    A Follow-Up Study (1970-1972) of the 1969 State Scholarship Program in the State of Rhode Island

    Introduction The philosophy and objectives underlying the Rhode Island State Scholarship Program encompassed severa1 basic assumptions about secondary education. Some of these assumptions have changed substantially over the past fifteen years and deserve close consideration. The new emphasis toward equalizing educational opportunities had been reflected in the changing philosophy that guided the administration of student financial aid. The genesis of most aid programs could be found in a concept that fostered the belief in a system built entirely upon meritocracy. This approach provided aid to students with high achievement and measured potential, irrespective of financial need. Educators seeing the inequity and irrationality of this approach developed a more standardized and need-analysis system. High ability students who needed assistance were given scholarships, but as the research over the past .five years had indicated, this kind of approach benefited only a few of the truly financially impoverished students. The overriding criterion of previous academic success has had the effect of excluding the most needy from participation. The review of the literature for this study was divided into three areas: (l) state scholarship or grant programs, {2) federal scholarship grant or loan programs, and (3) general student aid program models. Procedures The procedures followed in the conduct of the study were typical of those used in descriptive research design. A series of questions was identified bearing on important educational concerns; the related literature was reviewed; a survey instrument was designed and tested; follow ups were made; and the collected data were analyzed for significant findings and implications. As a means of assessing the effectiveness ·of the Rhode Island scholarship programs, the investigators conducted a survey of Rhode Island high school seniors in November 1970 and 1971. Four major variables relating to tests for higher education, academic and economic readiness for higher education, and specific demographic characteristics were investigated through a questionnaire administered in the high schools. The pooled responses to the questionnaire totaled 19,313 returns over the two-year period. This return represented 74 per cent of the 25,920 seniors in Rhode Island high schools during 1970 and 1971. Because of this relatively high return, the findings of the study were assumed to be indicative of the larger population and adequately described the characteristics of this total population.     Victims of more than just bias gender\u27s influence on jury awards and other monetary benefits in workplace sexual harassment claims

    The main objective in this research was to examine the extent to which gender and gender biases influence monetary benefits received, including jury award amounts, in workplace sexual harassment claims. Two methods were utilized to explore the discrepancies in monetary benefits received based on gender differences. The first method used was a survey to test various gender attitudes, attitudes on sexual harassment, and how influential a victim\u27s gender was on determinations of damage award amounts in sexual harassment cases. 6 two-way factorial univariate between-subject analyses of variance (ANOVAs) were used to analyze the survey data. The second method in this project consisted of an examination of claims filed by victims of sexual harassment. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission statistics were broken down by gender with respect to resolution type. This provided a means to assess the actual monetary benefits received by both men and women across all possible forms of claim resolutions. In conjunction, these two methods provide a more balanced approach to the assessment of gender discrepancies in sexual harassment claims. Using a combination of actual claims of sexual harassment and survey data, rather than just one or the other, allows for direct comparison between perception and reality. The comparison of perception and reality allows for a more complete assessment of the state of sexual harassment claims as they relate to victim\u27s gender. With a more complete assessment of sexual harassment claims and perceptions of sexual harassment it may be possible to bring to light potential injustices caused by gender or gender stereotyping, and correct any imbalances that may be present

    Development and Validation of a Short Form for the MCS-DR

    Using two independent samples of parents with a shared minor child but not currently in a relationship, this study explores the development and validation of a new 12-item short form for the Multidimensional Co-Parenting Scale for Dissolved Relationships (MCS-DR12). Confirmatory factor analysis will be used to assess the four-factor structure of the MCS-DR12 and then internal reliability, construct validity, and criterion validity will be assessed. The development of this short form provides a 12-item assessment of four impactful areas of co-parenting which is invaluable, especially for those working with court-mandated parenting programs who are in need of brief instruments to assess program efficacy

    Robust decentralised proof-of-position algorithms for smart city applications

    We present a decentralised class of algorithms called Tree-Proof-of-Position (T-PoP). T-PoP algorithms rely on the web of interconnected devices in a smart city to establish how likely it is that an agent is in the position they claim to be. T-PoP operates under adversarial assumptions, by which some agents are incentivised to be dishonest. We present a theoretical formulation for T-PoP and its security properties, and we validate this model through a large number of Monte-Carlo simulations. We specifically focus on two instances of T-PoP and analyse their security and reliability properties under a range of adversarial conditions. Use-cases and applications are discussed towards the end of this paper

    Wide Field Photometry of the Galactic Globular Cluster M22

    We present wide field photometry of the Galactic Globular Cluster M~22 in the B, V and I passbands for more than 186,000 stars. The study is complemented by the photometry in two narrowband filters centered on Hα_{\alpha} and the adjacent continuum, and by infrared J, H and K magnitudes derived from the 2 MASS survey for ∼\sim2000 stars. Profiting from this huge database, we completely characterized the evolved stellar sequences of the cluster by determining a variety of photometric parameters, including new photometric estimates of the mean metallicity, reddening and distance to the cluster. In particular, from our multi-wavelength analysis, we re-examined the long-standing metallicity spread problem in M~22. According to our dataset, we conclude that most of the observed width of the red giant branch must be due to differential reddening, which amounts to a maximum of ΔE(B−V)≃0.06\Delta E(B-V)\simeq0.06, although the presence of a small metallicity spread cannot be completely ruled out. More specifically, the maximum metallicity spread allowed by our data is of the order of Δ\Delta[Fe/H]≃0.1÷0.2\simeq 0.1\div 0.2 dex, i.e., not much more than what allowed by the photometric errors. Finally, we identified most of the known variable stars and peculiar objects in our field of view. In particular, we find additional evidence supporting previous optical identifications of the central star of the Planetary Nebula IRAS 18333-2357, which is associated with M~22.Comment: 15 pages, 16 figures, accepted for publication in MNRA

    The Role of Social Support in Predicting Depression and Task Overload Among College Students

    Guided by the Relationships Motivation Theory, this short-term longitudinal study examined associations between social support (i.e., relatedness), depression, and stress in the form of task overload among emerging adult, university students (N = 184 at time one; N = 105 at time two; 69.2% female). Results from a series of path models indicated a significant relationship between decreased perceptions of social support over time and an increase in perceived task overload with significant mediating effects through depressive symptomology. Implications for counseling services as well as intervention and awareness points for university professionals are discussed
