    In-Beam Background Suppression Shield

    The long (3ms) proton pulse of the European Spallation Source (ESS) gives rise to unique and potentially high backgrounds for the instrument suite. In such a source an instrument capabilities will be limited by it's Signal to Noise (S/N) ratio. The instruments with a direct view of the moderator, which do not use a bender to help mitigate the fast neutron background, are the most challenging. For these beam lines we propose the innovative shielding of placing blocks of material directly into the guide system, which allow a minimum attenuation of the cold and thermal fluxes relative to the background suppression. This shielding configuration has been worked into a beam line model using Geant4.     Threading the spindle: a geometric study of chiral liquid crystal polymer microparticles

    Polymeric particles are strong candidates for designing artificial materials capable of emulating the complex twisting-based functionality observed in biological systems. In this letter, we provide the first detailed investigation of the swelling behavior of bipolar polymer liquid crystalline microparticles. Deswelling from the spherical bipolar configuration causes the microparticle to contract anisotropically and twist in the process, resulting in a twisted spindle shaped structure. We propose a model to describe the observed spiral patterns and twisting behavior

    Generationing development

    The articles in this special issue present a persuasive case for accounts of development to recognise the integral and fundamental roles played by age and generation. While the past two decades have witnessed a burgeoning of literature demonstrating that children and youth are impacted by development, and that they can and do participate in development, the literature has tended to portray young people as a special group whose perspectives should not be forgotten. By contrast, the articles collected here make the case that age and generation, as relational constructs, cannot be ignored. Appropriating the term ‘generationing’, the editors argue that a variety of types of age relations profoundly structure the ways in which societies are transformed through development – both immanent processes of neoliberal modernisation and the interventions of development agencies that both respond and contribute to these. Drawing on the seven empirical articles, I attempt to draw some of the ideas together into a narrative that further argues the case for ‘generationing’ but also identifies gaps, questions and implications for further research

    Synthesis of Co–TiO2 nanostructured photocatalytic coatings for MDF substrates

    This paper describes for the first time the development of novel photocatalytic coatings specifically for medium density fibreboard (MDF) substrates. Anatase nanostructures were manufactured using a sol–gel synthesis route and subsequently heat-treated to form micro-sized agglomerates. In this study titanium dioxide particles were doped with cobalt in order to reduce the band gap and promote photocatalysis in the visible wavelength range. These agglomerates were then bound to MDF using a polyurethane-based binder. The subsequent coatings were tested under white, green and ultraviolet light using ink intelligent photoactive dyes in a gaseous environment and methylene blue indicator in an aqueous environment. Manufactured particles were also compared to the commercially available products P25 and Kronoclean 7000. The physical and chemical properties of the manufactured particles and substrates were evaluated using electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. This work demonstrates the performance of photocatalytic coatings applied to MDF

    Facility for fast neutron irradiation tests of electronics at the ISIS spallation neutron source

    The VESUVIO beam line at the ISIS spallation neutron source was set up for neutron irradiation tests in the neutron energy range above 10 MeV. The neutron flux and energy spectrum were shown, in benchmark activation measurements, to provide a neutron spectrum similar to the ambient one at sea level, but with an enhancement in intensity of a factor of 107. Such conditions are suitable for accelerated testing of electronic components, as was demonstrated here by measurements of soft error rates in recent technology field programable gate arrays
