The Executive Revolving Door: New Dataset on the Career Moves of Former Danish Ministers and Permanent Secretaries
Concerns have been raised that transfers of bureaucrats and politicians into the private sector might create unfair advantages for their future employers and even lead to distrust in government. Not surprisingly, the study of the revolving door has therefore gained prominence in the academic literature. Importantly, however, less attention has been paid to the executive branch. We add to the study of the revolving door by presenting the first dataset on the executive revolving door in Denmark. To do so, we trace the frequency, timing and character of the career moves of Danish Ministers and Permanent Secretaries who held office from 2009 to 2019. Our data document that the Danish executive revolving door is widespread: more than a third of Danish Ministers and Permanent Secretaries end up in a private job within the same year or the year after they stop their job. If we extend the period and investigate the entire period after public service, the number is above 60 percent. Moreover, a substantial share of the jobs obtained is in companies and at a senior level. Our note concludes with reflections on how our data can be used to fill existing research gaps and should be complemented in future research.publishedVersio
The North American toxic fungal pathogen G3 Claviceps purpurea (Fries) Tulasne is established in the German Wadden Sea.
Three lineages (G1, G2 and G3) within the toxic invasive ergot fungus Claviceps purpurea (Fries) Tulasne are known; these should be recognized as unique species, or at least as varieties. On 2 November 2011, a very dense, well established population of G3 C. purpurea was found on the common cord-grass Spartina anglica C.E. Hubbard at two localities on the German North Sea coast in the Wadden Sea (Caciliengroden and Hooksiel). It is most likely that G3 C. purpurea has a North American origin and entered German coastal waters by floating sclerotia from Irish, British, or Benelux waters, where it was previously found. However, introduction via shipsâ ballast water coming from their native or introduced ranges is also plausible. Furthermore imports of G3 sclerotia via seed mussels collected from wild subtidal banks in Irish, British and Dutch coastal waters and released into the German Wadden Sea can currently not be excluded. Risks from this highly toxic fungus for human, grazing animals and the marine environment have been identified but not yet quantified in terms of impact. A suitable monitoring programme should be implemented to detect any unwanted impacts caused by G3 C. purpurea in German salt marshes at an early phase
Manipulating the antioxidant capacity of halophytes to increase their cultural and economic value through saline cultivation
Halophytes, salt-tolerant plants, are a source of valuable secondary metabolites with potential economic value. The steady-state pools of many stress-related metabolites are already enhanced in halophytes when compared with glycophytes, but growth under conditions away from the optimum can induce stress and consequently result in changes to secondary metabolites such as antioxidants. However, direct evidence for increasing the concentration of valuable secondary metabolites as a consequence of altering the salinity of the growing environment still remains equivocal. To address this, we analysed a range of metabolites with antioxidant capacity (including total phenols, flavonoids, ascorbate, reduced/oxidized glutathione and reactive oxygen species scavenging enzymes) in seedlings and plants from different families (Amaranthaceae, Brassicaceae, Plantaginaceae and Rhizophoraceae) and habitats grown under different salt concentrations. We show that it is possible to manipulate the antioxidant capacity of plants and seedlings by altering the saline growing environment, the length of time under saline cultivation and the developmental stage. Among the species studied, the halophytes Tripolium pannonicum, Plantago coronopus, Lepidium latifolium and Salicornia europaea demonstrated the most potential as functional foods or nutraceuticals.Deutsche Bundesstiftung Umwelt/AZ/27708COST/STSM/FA/0901-041011-011415DEFR
Salicornia as a crop plant in temperate regions: selection of genetically characterized ecotypes and optimization of their cultivation conditions
Rising sea levels and salinization of groundwater due to global climate change result in fast dwindling sources of fresh water. Therefore it is important to find alternatives to grow food crops and vegetables. Halophytes are naturally evolved salt-tolerant plants that are adapted to grow in environments that inhibit the growth of most glycophytic crop plants substantially. Members of the Salicornioideae are promising candidates for saline agriculture due to their high tolerance to salinity. Our aim was to develop genetically characterized lines of Salicornia and Sarcocornia for further breeding and to determine optimal cultivation conditions. To obtain a large and diverse genetic pool, seeds were collected from different countries and ecological conditions. The External Transcribed Spacer (ETS) sequence of 62 Salicornia and Sarcocornia accessions was analysed: ETS sequence data showed a clear distinction between the two genera and between different Salicornia taxa. However, in some cases the ETS was not sufficiently variable to resolve morphologically distinct species. For the determination of optimal cultivation conditions, experiments on germination, seedling establishment and growth to a harvestable size were performed using different accessions of Salicornia spp. Experiments revealed that the percentage germination was greatest at lower salinities and with temperatures of 20/10ËC (day/night). Salicornia spp. produced more harvestable biomass In hydroponic culture than in sand culture, but the nutrient concentration requires optimization as hydroponically grown plants showed symptoms of stress. Salicornia ramosissima produced more harvestable biomass than S. dolichostachya in artificial sea water containing 257 mM NaCl. Based on preliminary tests on ease of cultivation, gain in biomass, morphology and taste, S. dolichostachya was investigated in more detail and the optimal salinity for seedling establishment found to be 100 mM. Harvesting of S. dolichostachya twice in a growing season was successful but the interval between the harvests needs to be optimized to maximise biomass production

Health-related quality of life in multiple sclerosis: Effects of natalizumab
Objective: To report the relationship between disease activity and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in relapsing multiple sclerosis, and the impact of natalizumab. Methods: HRQoL data were available from 2,113 multiple sclerosis patients in natalizumab clinical studies. In the Natalizumab Safety and Efficacy in Relapsing Remitting Multiple Sclerosis (AFFIRM) study, patients received natalizumab 300mg (n = 627) or placebo (n = 315); in the Safety and Efficacy of Natalizumab in Combination with Interferon Beta-1a in Patients with Relapsing Remitting Multiple Sclerosis (SENTINEL) study, patients received interferon beta-la (IFN-\u3b2-1a) plus natalizumab 300mg (n = 589), or IFN-\u3b2-1a plus placebo (n = 582). The Short Form-36 (SF-36) and a subject global assessment visual analog scale were administered at baseline and weeks 24, 52, and 104. Prespecified analyses included changes from baseline to week 104 in SF-36 and visual analog scale scores. Odds ratios for clinically meaningful improvement or worsening on the SF-36 Physical Component Summary (PCS) and Mental Component Summary were calculated. Results: Mean baseline SF-36 scores were significantly less than the general US population and correlated with Expanded Disability Status Scale scores, sustained disability progression, relapse number, and increased volume of brain magnetic resonance imaging lesions. Natalizumab significantly improved SF-36 PCS and Mental Component Summary scores at week 104 in AFFIRM. PCS changes were significantly improved by week 24 and at all subsequent time points. Natalizumab-treated patients in both studies were more likely to experience clinically important improvement and less likely to experience clinically important deterioration on the SF-36 PCS. The visual analog scale also showed significantly improved HRQoL with natalizumab. Interpretation: HRQoL was impaired in relapsing multiple sclerosis patients, correlated with severity of disease as measured by neurological ratings or magnetic resonance imaging, and improved significantly with natalizumab. \ua9 2007 American Neurological Association. The incidence and significance of anti-natalizumab antibodies - Results from AFFIRM and SENTINEL
Objective: To determine the incidence and clinical effects of antibodies that develop during treatment with natalizumab
