Nina Bouraoui’s Nos baisers sont des adieux: Ekphrasis and the Accumulation of Memories

This article aims to explore the function of the image and the purpose of the works of art in Franco-Algerian author Nina Bouraoui’s Nos baisers sont des adieux (2010). Similar to a scrapbook with short descriptions of people, places, and objects, the book itself does not contain any visual representations. In spite of this lack, the image—the latter intended as mental or physical picture that reproduces reality—is a central theme throughout the work. Because visual art is described and interpreted but not shown, I argue that, by means of ékphrasis, the word-image dialogue further enables the narrator to express the multiple aspects of her own subjectivity and the reader to participate in the emotional experience that visual art triggers. I also maintain that Bouraoui\u27s decision to focus on the work of provocative, groundbreaking visual artists is a socio-political statement in and of itself

Computationally-Effective Optimal Excitation Matching for the Synthesis of Large Monopulse Arrays

Antenna arrays able to generate two different patterns are widely used in tracking radar systems [1]. Optimal (in the Dolph�]Chebyshev sense) sum [2] and difference patterns [3] can be generated by using two independent feed networks. Unfortunately, such a situation generally turns out to be impracticable because of its costs, the occupied physical space, the circuit complexity, and electromagnetic interferences. Thus, starting from the optimal sum pattern a sub�]optimal solution for the difference pattern is usually synthesized by means of the sub�]array technique. The array elements are grouped in sub�]arrays properly weighted for matching the constrains of the difference beam. Finding the best elements grouping and the sub�]array weights is a complex and challenging research topic, especially when dealing with large arrays. As far as linear arrays are concerned, McNamara proposed in [4] an analytical method for determining the �gbest compromise�h difference pattern. Unfortunately, when the ratio between the elements of the array and sub�]arrays increases, such a technique exhibits several limitations mainly due to the ill�]conditioning of the problem and the computational costs due to exhaustive evaluations. A non�]negligible saving might be achieved by applying optimization algorithms (see for instance [5] and [6]) aimed at minimizing a suitable cost function. Notwithstanding, optimization�]based approaches still appear computationally expensive when dealing with large arrays because of wide dimension of solution space to be sampled. In order to properly deal with these computational issues, this contribution presents an innovative approach based on an optimal excitation matching procedure. By exploiting the relationship between independently�]optimal sum and difference patterns, the dimension of the solution space is considerably reduced and efficiently sampled by taking into account the presence of array elements more suitable to change sub�]array membership. In the following, the proposed technique is described pointing out, through a representative case, its potentialities and effectiveness in dealing with large arrays. An innovative approach based on a tree-searching algorithm for the optimal matching of independently optimum sum and difference excitations

An innovative approach for the optimal matching of independently optimum sum and difference patterns through sub-arrayed monopulse linear arrays is presented. By exploiting the relationship between the independently optimal sum and difference excitations, the set of possible solutions is considerably reduced and the synthesis problem is recast as the search of the best solution in a non-complete binary tree. Towards this end, a fast resolution algorithm that exploits the presence of elements more suitable to charge sub-array membership is presented. The results of a set of numerical experiments are reported in order to validate the proposed approach pointing out its effectiveness also in comparison with state-of-the-art optimal matching techniques. Antithrombotic therapy with rivaroxaban in five patients with paroxysmal nocturnal haemoglobinuria and thrombotic events

Five patients with paroxysmal nocturnal haemoglobinuria and thrombotic complications under oral antithrombotic treatment with vitamin K antagonist were switched to receive the direct oral anticoagulant rivaroxaban an factor Xa inhibitor. In all five patients haematological and biochemical parameters and adverse events were evaluated for a period of twelve months. Therapy with rivaroxaban was well tolerated in all cases and one patient showed a significant reduction of bleeding and transfusion requirement. All patients obtained a significant reduction in days of hospitalization with a consequent improvement in their quality of life after rivaroxaban treatment

Assia Djebar. Le corps invisible: voir sans etre vue

This thesis traces the evolution of attitudes towards the body, desire, autobiography, and self-affirmation, in three novels of Assia Djebar: L\u27amour, la fantasia, Vaste est la prison, and Les nuits de Strasbourg. The three novels share a common trait: the narrators\u27 will to express their body and their desires. This body, which is simultaneously anonymous and concealed, is at the very center of a contradiction; it is often relegated to representation as a ghost without any corporeal reality. It is been our objective to follow the narrators\u27 introspective reflection on the multiple relationships between Algerian women and public space, designated as a masculin dominion controlled by the male gaze. The narrators move from a symbolic aphasia in L\u27amour, la fantasia, in which they are incapable of experiencing and expressing emotions to the definition of a private space of desire in Vaste est la prison, and ultimately, in Les nuits de Strasbourg, to the possibility of mastering space and time which they themselves define in their relationships to men. In order to subvert the patriarchal system, the narrators develop strategies of camouflage and disguise as means of manipulating the notion of the incorporeal feminine body. In this progression from passive to active invisibility, they render conscious the unconscious dimension of their attitude towards themselves and towards men. In the context of Algerian society, the presence of woman in the public space is unacceptable. The gesture of making public space accessible to women requires a collaboration between the newly conscious Algerian woman and a male partner who embraces both her and his evolved identity

The issue of emergency planning in areas exposed to natural hazards cannot yet be considered as a focus within the scientific literature, probably because it has been judged as “too operative” for the interest of academic research. The topic of land use planning, spatial planning, and urban planning in risky areas, conversely, has gained attention in recent years.
