    On the Stopping Time of a Bouncing Ball

    We study a simple model of a bouncing ball that takes explicitely into account the elastic deformability of the body and the energy dissipation due to internal friction. We show that this model is not subject to the problem of inelastic collapse, that is, it does not allow an infinite number of impacts in a finite time. We compute asymptotic expressions for the time of flight and for the impact velocity. We also prove that contacts with zero velocity of the lower end of the ball are possible, but non-generic.     The formation of mineral and energy resources involves the interaction of groundwater flow, mechanical deformation, mass and heat transport processes. Thereby, groundwater flow patterns, temperature field, and fluid-rock interactions are all interdependent. This calls for a unified description linking the coupling between the different scales and related physical phenomena involved. A mathematical formulation of the main driving processes affecting basin fluid and heat transport allows developing numerical models as tools to examine the interactions of simultaneously active processes and variable parameters within the constraints given by physical principles and taking into account proper temporal and three dimensional spatial scales. Therefore, the usage of mathematical models is justified by the help they bring in the understanding and verification of specific mechanisms acting in natural systems. In Section “Basin Analysis” at GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences mathematical models of increasing degree of complexity are applied to the study of energy and mass transport processes in complex sedimentary basins

    Physical activity (PA) has health benefits for people with type 2 diabetes (T2D). Indeed, regular PA is considered an important part of any T2D management plan, yet most patients adopt a sedentary lifestyle. Exercise referral schemes (ERS) have the potential to effectively promote physical activity among T2D patients, and their effectiveness may be enhanced when they are supported by computer-based technologies. The 'TRIPL-A' study (i.e., a TRIal to promote PhysicaL Activity among patients in the young-old age affected by T2D) aims to assess if realizing an innovative ERS, based on a strong partnership among general practitioners, specialist physicians, exercise specialists, and patients, and supported by a web-based application (WBA), can effectively lead sedentary older T2D patients to adopt an active lifestyle

    Eye health screening in migrant population: primary care experience in Lazio (Italy) from the PROTECT project

    Italy is a natural corridor for entry into Europe, receiving thousands of refugees and migrants needing socio-economic and health assistance yearly. Impaired vision due to eye disease is estimated to affect at least 2.2 billion people worldwide, especially in this underprivileged population. To overcome this deep disparity, new intervention strategies, such as the PROTECT project, were planned with the aim of assessing, in the context of the head–neck area, the eye health in vulnerable applicants and holders of international protection. A total of 3023 migrants were involved in the project. Demographic factors and eye history were collected using a questionnaire. Using portable diagnostic instruments, an eye screening including monocular visual acuity, intraocular pressure, anterior segment, and ocular fundus was performed. The mean age was 31.6 ± 13.1 years and more than 50% underwent the first eye evaluation. Vision impairment was claimed by 16.6% of subjects and the most frequent diseases diagnosed were: refractive errors (11%), strabismus (6%), red eye (6%), cataract (5.3%), and ocular hypertension (1%). Retinal alterations were observed in 5% of migrants. The PROTECT project allows us to increase the accessibility of head–neck disease prevention care. Moreover, our results confirm the utility of an eye screening assessment for early identification of the most relevant and preventable ocular diseases, especially in disadvantaged populations

    Il caso dell'Erbario Casapini (secolo XVIII)

    Casapini's Herbarium is an 18th century manuscript, belonging to the Palatina Library in Parma and currently stored at the Botanical Garden of Parma University. The Herbarium collects nearly 200 samples of dried plant specimens that have been severely affected by physical, biological and chemical degradation. In 2016 the Inner Wheel Club Italia-Parma Est, an international female association, decided to fund the conservation of this Herbarium in order to preserve it and allow its study. A large team of professionals, including conservators, chemists, physicists and a botanist, has been working on the project to secure this unique but very fragile object. This paper discusses the condition assessment, the identification of degradation processes and the first conservation approach to the Casapini Herbarium. Issues related to the treatment of heavily corroded areas, the resewing of the sections and the future storage of the manuscript are also identified and highlighted for further research
