In this paper we propose to identify which gender performative categories constitute scholar identity. The core of this study encompasses both the perspective Sandra’s Bem gender schema theory (Gender schema theory 355 y Gender schema theory implications 604) and Judith’s Butler concept of significance frameworks (Género disputa 274-275). Methodologically, we developed a narrative research about ten scholar success teenagers through an analysis that we will divide into three phases: (1) following Paul Ricoeur philosophy and his Freud’s reading we categorized the key aspects of scholar’s identity: samesses, ipseity and educative relational aspects (2) taking into consideration the categories proposed by Sandra Bem in the Sex Role Inventory Traits (BSRI), we analyzed the performative categories of gender that emerged from the interviews (3) assessment of the presence or absence of signifiers related to gender identity stereotypes. We conclude by saying that in the school gender bias is being promoted by relating school success with characteristics typically attributed to the female gender

IL-4 drives microglia and macrophages toward a phenotype conducive for tissue repair and functional recovery after spinal cord injury

Macrophages and microglia play a key role in the maintenance of nervous system homeostasis. However, upon different challenges, they can adopt several phenotypes, which may lead to divergent effects on tissue repair. After spinal cord injury (SCI), microglia and macrophages show predominantly pro-inflammatory activation and contribute to tissue damage. However, the factors that hamper their conversion to an anti-inflammatory state after SCI, or to other protective phenotypes, are poorly understood. Here, we show that IL-4 protein levels are undetectable in the spinal cord after contusion injury, which likely favors microglia and macrophages to remain in a pro-inflammatory state. We also demonstrate that a single delayed intraspinal injection of IL-4, 48 hours after SCI, induces increased expression of M2 marker in microglia and macrophages. We also show that delayed injection of IL-4 leads to the appearance of resolution-phase macrophages, and that IL-4 enhances resolution of inflammation after SCI. Interestingly, we provide clear evidence that delayed administration of IL-4 markedly improves functional outcomes and reduces tissue damage after contusion injury. It is possible that these improvements are mediated by the presence of macrophages with M2 markers and resolution-phase macrophages. These data suggest that therapies aimed at increasing IL-4 levels could be valuable for the treatment of acute SCI, for which there are currently no effective treatments

Illicit drug use and cerebral microbleeds in stroke and transient ischemic attack patients

Background: Cerebral microbleeds (CMB) signal cerebral small vessel disease and are associated with ischemic stroke (IS) incidence, recurrence, and complications. While illicit drug use (IDU) is associated with cerebral small vessel disease, the association between CMB and IDU is understudied. We sought to delineate differences in vascular risk factors between IDU and CMB and determine the effect of this relationship on outcomes in IS/transient ischemic attack (TIA) patients. Methods: We included 2001 consecutive IS and TIA patients (years 2009-2018) with a readable T2*gradient-echo MRI sequence. CMB rating followed standardized guidelines and CMB were grouped topographically into lobar, deep or infratentorial. IDU data (history and/or urine toxicology) was available for 1746 patients. The adverse composite outcome included pneumonia, urinary tract infection, deep venous thrombosis or death during hospitalization. Good functional outcome was defined as modified Rankin scale score < 3 and ambulatory on discharge. Univariate analysis was used to assess vascular risk factors and multivariable logistic regression was used to characterize the IDU/CMB relationship on outcomes. Results: We observed IDU in 13.8 % (n=241), and CMB in 32.9% (n=575, 53.8% lobar, 27.3% deep and 18.8% infratentorial). Patients with IDU and at least one CMB were older (53.6±10.5 vs. 56.9±11.5, p=0.04), had a lower BMI (28.1±5.9 vs. 26.6±4.4, p=0.04), and were more likely to have had a previous IS/TIA (25.1% vs. 41.9%, p=0.01). IDU trended higher for those with severe CMB (10+) compared with those without CMB and 1-9 CMB (25% [n=9] vs 14.3% [n=1171] and 12.1% [n=65] respectively; p=0.07) without individual drug deviations from this pattern. Adverse and good functional outcomes were observed in 177 and 905 total patients, respectively. No significant interaction was observed between IDU and CMB with either adverse or functional composite outcomes. Conclusion: IDU prevalence was high in our urban study population, and showed a borderline association with increasing CMB burden. Patients with CMB and IDU history were older and more likely to have had a previous IS/TIA. Further studies are required to clarify the clinical consequences related to the relationship between IDU and CMB.Author Disclosures: B. Petrie: None. H. Lau: None. F. Cajiga-Pena: None. S. Wide area network autoscaling for cloud applications

    Get PDF
Modern cloud orchestrators like Kubernetes provide a versatile and robust way to host applications at scale. One of their key features is autoscaling, which automatically adjusts cloud resources (compute, memory, storage) in order to adapt to the demands of applications. However, the scope of cloud autoscaling is limited to the datacenter hosting the cloud and it doesn't apply uniformly to the allocation of network resources. In I/O-constrained or data-in-motion use cases this can lead to severe performance degradation for the application. For example, when the load on a cloud service increases and the Wide Area Network (WAN) connecting the datacenter to the Internet becomes saturated, the application flows experience an increase in delay and loss. In many cases this is dealt with overprovisioning network capacity, which introduces additional costs and inefficiencies. On the other hand, thanks to the concept of "Network as Code", the WAN exposes a set of APIs that can be used to dynamically allocate and de-allocate capacity on-demand. In this paper we propose extending the concept of cloud autoscaling into the network to address this limitation. This way, applications running in the cloud can communicate their networking requirements, like bandwidth or traffic profile, to a Software-Defined Networking (SDN) controller or Network as a Service (NaaS) platform. Moreover, we aim to define the concepts of vertical and horizontal autoscaling applied to networking. We present a prototype that automatically allocates bandwidth to the underlay network, according to the requirements of the applications hosted in Kubernetes. Finally, we discuss open research challenges. This work was supported by the Spanish MINECO under contract TEC2017-90034-C2-1-R (ALLIANCE), the Catalan Institution for Research and Advanced Studies (ICREA).Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

Colorectal cancer; Metastatic disease; Liquid biopsyCáncer colorrectal; Enfermedad metastásica; Biopsia líquidaCàncer colorectal; Malaltia metastàtica; Biòpsia líquidaPurpose Panitumumab plus FOLFOX (P-FOLFOX) is standard first-line treatment for RAS wild-type (WT) metastatic colorectal cancer. The value of panitumumab rechallenge is currently unknown. We assessed addition of panitumumab to FOLFIRI (P-FOLFIRI) beyond progression to P-FOLFOX in patients with no RAS mutations in liquid biopsy (LB). Methods In this randomized phase II trial, patients were assigned (3:2 ratio) to second-line P-FOLFIRI (arm A) or FOLFIRI alone (arm B). LB for circulating tumor DNA analysis was collected at study entry and at disease progression. Primary endpoint was 6-month progression-free survival. Two-stage Simon design required 85 patients to be included (EudraCT 2017-004519-38). Results Between February 2019 and November 2020, 49 patients were screened (16 RAS mutations in LB detected) and 31 included (18 assigned to arm A and 13 to arm B). The study was prematurely closed due to inadequate recruitment. Serious adverse events were more frequent in arm A (44% vs. 23%). Overall response rate was 33% (arm A) vs. 7.7% (arm B). Six-month progression-free survival rate was 66.7% (arm A) and 38.5% (arm B). Median progression-free survival was 11.0 months (arm A) and 4.0 months (arm B) (hazard ratio, 0.58). At disease progression, RAS or BRAF mutations in LB were found in 4/11 patients (36%) in arm A and 2/10 (20%) in arm B. Conclusions The BEYOND study suggests a meaningful benefit of P-FOLFIRI beyond progression to P-FOLFOX in metastatic colorectal cancer patients with WT RAS status selected by LB. This strategy deserves further investigation. This work was supported by AMGEN S.A
