Extraction of electromagnetic neutron form factors through inclusive and exclusive polarized electron scattering on polarized 3He target
Inclusive 3He(e,e') and exclusive 3He(e,e'n) processes with polarized
electrons and 3He have been theoretically analyzed and values for the magnetic
and electric neutron form factors have been extracted. In both cases the form
factor values agree well with the ones extracted from processes on the
deuteron. Our results are based on Faddeev solutions, modern NN forces and
partially on the incorporation of mesonic exchange currents.Comment: 28 pages, 29 Postscript figure
Extended Gari-Krumpelmann model fits to nucleon electromagnetic form factors
Nucleon electromagnetic form factor data (including recent data) is fitted
with models that respect the confinement and asymptotic freedom properties of
QCD. Gari-Krumpelmann (GK) type models, which include the major vector meson
pole contributions and at high momentum transfer conform to the predictions of
perturbative QCD, are combined with Hohler-Pietarinen (HP) models, which also
include the width of the rho meson and the addition of higher mass vector meson
exchanges, but do not evolve into the explicit form of PQCD at high momentum
transfer. Different parameterizations of the GK model's hadronic form factors,
the effect of including the width of the rho meson and the addition of the next
(in mass) isospin 1 vector meson are considered. The quality of fit and the
consistency of the parameters select three of the combined HP/GK type models.
Projections are made to the higher momentum transfers which are relevant to
electron-deuteron experiments. The projections vary little for the preferred
models, removing much of the ambiguity in electron-nucleus scattering
predictions.Comment: 18pp, 7 figures, using RevTeX with BoxedEPS macros; 1 new figure,

Effect of recent R_p and R_n measurements on extended Gari-Krumpelmann model fits to nucleon electromagnetic form factors
The Gari-Krumpelmann (GK) models of nucleon electromagnetic form factors, in
which the rho, omega, and phi vector meson pole contributions evolve at high
momentum transfer to conform to the predictions of perturbative QCD (pQCD), was
recently extended to include the width of the rho meson by substituting the
result of dispersion relations for the pole and the addition of rho' (1450)
isovector vector meson pole. This extended model was shown to produce a good
overall fit to all the available nucleon electromagnetic form factor (emff)
data. Since then new polarization data shows that the electric to magnetic
ratios R_p and R_n obtained are not consistent with the older G_{Ep} and G_{En}
data in their range of momentum transfer. The model is further extended to
include the omega' (1419) isoscalar vector meson pole. It is found that while
this GKex cannot simultaneously fit the new R_p and the old G_{En} data, it can
fit the new R_p and R_n well simultaneously. An excellent fit to all the
remaining data is obtained when the inconsistent G_{Ep} and G_{En} is omitted.
The model predictions are shown up to momentum transfer squared, Q^2, of 8
GeV^2/c^2.Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures, using RevTeX4; email correspondence to

A Measurement of the Electric Form Factor of the Neutron through at (GeV/c)
We report the first measurement of the neutron electric form factor
via using a solid polarized target. was
determined from the beam-target asymmetry in the scattering of longitudinally
polarized electrons from polarized deuterated ammonia, ND. The
measurement was performed in Hall C at Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator
Facility (TJNAF) in quasi free kinematics with the target polarization
perpendicular to the momentum transfer. The electrons were detected in a
magnetic spectrometer in coincidence with neutrons in a large solid angle
segmented detector. We find at (GeV/c).Comment: Latex2e 5 pages, 3 figure
Determination of rotation periods in solar-like stars with irregular sampling: the Gaia case
We present a study on the determination of rotation periods (P) of solar-like
stars from the photometric irregular time-sampling of the ESA Gaia mission,
currently scheduled for launch in 2013, taking into account its dependence on
ecliptic coordinates. We examine the case of solar-twins as well as thousands
of synthetic time-series of solar-like stars rotating faster than the Sun. In
the case of solar twins we assume that the Gaia unfiltered photometric passband
G will mimic the variability of the total solar irradiance (TSI) as measured by
the VIRGO experiment. For stars rotating faster than the Sun, light-curves are
simulated using synthetic spectra for the quiet atmosphere, the spots, and the
faculae combined by applying semi-empirical relationships relating the level of
photospheric magnetic activity to the stellar rotation and the Gaia
instrumental response. The capabilities of the Deeming, Lomb-Scargle, and Phase
Dispersion Minimisation methods in recovering the correct rotation periods are
tested and compared. The false alarm probability (FAP) is computed using Monte
Carlo simulations and compared with analytical formulae. The Gaia scanning law
makes the rate of correct detection of rotation periods strongly dependent on
the ecliptic latitude (beta). We find that for P ~ 1 d, the rate of correct
detection increases with ecliptic latitude from 20-30 per cent at beta ~
0{\deg} to a peak of 70 per cent at beta=45{\deg}, then it abruptly falls below
10 per cent at beta > 45{\deg}. For P > 5 d, the rate of correct detection is
quite low and for solar twins is only 5 per cent on average.Comment: 12 pages, 18 figures, accepted by MNRA
Nucleon electromagnetic form factors and polarization observables in space-like and time-like regions
We perform a global analysis of the experimental data of the electromagnetic
nucleon form factors, in space-like and time-like regions. We give the
expressions of the observables in annihilation processes, such as , or , in terms of form factors. We discuss some
of the phenomenological models proposed in the literature for the space-like
region, and consider their analytical continuation to the time-like region.
After determining the parameters through a fit on the available data, we give
predictions for the observables which will be experimentally accessible with
large statistics, polarized annihilation reactions.Comment: 25 pages, 5 figures 7 table
Phenomenology of the Deuteron Electromagnetic Form Factors
A rigorous extraction of the deuteron charge form factors from tensor
polarization data in elastic electron-deuteron scattering, at given values of
the 4-momentum transfer, is presented. Then the world data for elastic
electron-deuteron scattering is used to parameterize, in three different ways,
the three electromagnetic form factors of the deuteron in the 4-momentum
transfer range 0-7 fm^-1. This procedure is made possible with the advent of
recent polarization measurements. The parameterizations allow a
phenomenological characterization of the deuteron electromagnetic structure.
They can be used to remove ambiguities in the form factors extraction from
future polarization data.Comment: 18 pages (LaTeX), 2 figures Feb. 25: minor changes of content and in

Spectral functions of isoscalar scalar and isovector electromagnetic form factors of the nucleon at two-loop order
We calculate the imaginary parts of the isoscalar scalar and isovector
electromagnetic form factors of the nucleon up to two-loop order in chiral
perturbation theory. Particular attention is paid on the correct behavior of Im
and Im at the two-pion threshold
in connection with the non-relativistic 1/M-expansion. We recover the
well-known strong enhancement near threshold originating from the nearby
anomalous singularity at . In the
case of the scalar spectral function Im one finds a significant
improvement in comparison to the lowest order one-loop result. Higher order
-rescattering effects are however still necessary to close a remaining
20%-gap to the empirical scalar spectral function. The isovector electric and
magnetic spectral functions Im get additionally enhanced near
threshold by the two-pion-loop contributions. After supplementing their
two-loop results by a phenomenological -meson exchange term one can
reproduce the empirical isovector electric and magnetic spectral functions
fairly well.Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures, submitted to Physical Review
Electromagnetic Form Factors of the Nucleon in an Improved Quark Model
Nucleon electromagnetic form factors are studied in the cloudy bag model
(CBM) with center-of-mass and recoil corrections. This is the first
presentation of a full set of nucleon form factors using the CBM. The center of
mass motion is eliminated via several different momentum projection techniques
and the results are compared. It is found that the shapes of these form factors
are significantly improved with respect to the experimental data if the Lorentz
contraction of the internal structure of the baryon is also appropriately taken
into account.Comment: revtex, 28 pages, 8 ps figs include
Annual net snow accumulation over southern Greenland from 1975 to 1998
As part of NASA's Program for Arctic Regional Climate Assessment (PARCA), extensive ice core measurements of annual net water-equivalent accumulation have been made recently around the southern Greenland ice sheet. Analysis of these measurements demonstrates that annual and seasonal accumulation patterns are sometimes regional, with temporal variability in accumulation correlated over large areas. Using this unique, widely distributed set of contemporaneous accumulation measurements, as well as available previously published observations, we developed maps of annual net snow accumulation south of 73° N for each year from 1975 to 1998. Here net snow accumulation is defined as snow accumulation minus ablation. In order to achieve a more consistent spatial distibution of core measurements for each of the 24 years in the study period, some of the observed records were extrapolated up to 5 years using empirical relationships between monthly precipitation measured at coastal stations and the observed ice core net accumulation records. Initial comparisons between the maps of annual net snow accumulation and similar maps of net accumulation derived from meteorological model simulations show excellent agreement in the temporal variability of accumulation, although significant differences in the magnitude of accumulation remain. Both measurements and model simulations indicate that annual net accumulation, averaged over all higher-elevation regions (above 2000 m) of the southern ice sheet, varies significantly from one year to the next. The maximum year-to-year change during the 24-year study period occurred between calendar years 1995 and 1996, when the average annual net snow accumulation increased by 101 and 172 kg m-2 yr-1, or 37 and 57, for observations and model simulations, respectively. Taken alone, this 1-year change in average net snow accumulation corresponds to a drop in sea level of 0.16 and 0.28 mm yr-1. Copyright 2001 by the American Geophysical Union
