An origin for the linear magnetic anomalies on Mars through accretion of terranes: implications for dynamo timing

The proposed existence of magnetic lineations in the Terra Cimmeria and Terra Sirenum regions of Mars was initially explained by Earth-like sea-floor spreading. Here we argue instead that these lineations could have been formed at a convergent plate margin through collision and accretion of terranes. A similar process produced banded magnetic anomalies, similar in geometry and even in size to those in Earth’s North American Cordillera. Because only sparse and generally weak anomalies have been detected in the martian northern lowlands, which could constitute an analog to the terrestrial oceanic crust, it is possible that the magnetic field stopped its activity while crustal recycling was still active in Mars

Dynamic time warping applied to detection of confusable word pairs in automatic speech recognition

In this paper we present a rnethod to predict if two words are likely to be confused by an Autornatic SpeechRecognition (ASR) systern. This method is based on the c1assical Dynamic Time Warping (DTW) technique. This technique, which is usually used in ASR to measure the distance between two speech signals, is usedhere to calculate the distance between two words. With this distance the words are c1assified as confusable or not confusable using a threshold. Multiserotype Protection Elicited by a Combinatorial Prime-Boost Vaccination Strategy against Bluetongue Virus

Bluetongue virus (BTV) belongs to the genus Orbivirus within the family Reoviridae. The development of vector-based vaccines expressing conserved protective antigens results in increased immune activation and could reduce the number of multiserotype vaccinations required, therefore providing a cost-effective product. Recent recombinant DNA technology has allowed the development of novel strategies to develop marker and safe vaccines against BTV. We have now engineered naked DNAs and recombinant modified vaccinia virus Ankara (rMVA) expressing VP2, VP7 and NS1 proteins from BTV-4. IFNAR(−/−) mice inoculated with DNA/rMVA-VP2,-VP7-NS1 in an heterologous prime boost vaccination strategy generated significant levels of antibodies specific of VP2, VP7, and NS1, including those with neutralizing activity against BTV-4. In addition, vaccination stimulated specific CD8+ T cell responses against these three BTV proteins. Importantly, the vaccine combination expressing NS1, VP2 and VP7 proteins of BTV-4, elicited sterile protection against a lethal dose of homologous BTV-4 infection. Remarkably, the vaccine induced cross-protection against lethal doses of heterologous BTV-8 and BTV-1 suggesting that the DNA/rMVA-VP2,-VP7,-NS1 marker vaccine is a promising multiserotype vaccine against BTV

Revisiting the role of steam methane reforming with CO2 capture and storage for long-term hydrogen production

Road transport is associated with high greenhouse gas emissions due to its current dependence on fossil fuels. In this regard, the implementation of alternative fuels such as hydrogen is expected to play a key role in decarbonising the transport system. Nevertheless, attention should be paid to the suitability of hydrogen production pathways as low-carbon solutions. In this work, an energy systems optimisation model for the prospective assessment of a national hydrogen production mix was upgraded in order to unveil the potential role of grey hydrogen from steam methane reforming (SMR) and blue hydrogen from SMR with CO2 capture and storage (CCS) in satisfying the hydrogen demanded by fuel cell electric vehicles in Spain from 2020 to 2050. This was done by including CCS retrofit of SMR plants in the energy systems model, as a potential strategy within the scope of the European Hydrogen Strategy. Considering three hypothetical years for banning hydrogen from fossil-based plants without CCS (2030, 2035, and 2040), it was found that SMR could satisfy the whole demand for hydrogen for road transport in the short term (2020–2030), while being substituted by water electrolysis in the medium-to-long term (2030–2050). Fomento del aprendizaje autónomo en una asignatura de computadores paralelos

Este trabajo presenta una actividad diseñada para una asignatura de arquitectura de computadores que estudia computadores paralelos. Se propuso para fomentar que los alumnos trabajen la asignatura durante todo el cuatrimestre, facilitar el estudio de los contenidos de la asignatura, mejorar la opinión de los alumnos sobre estos contenidos y favorecer el aprendizaje autónomo y una actitud reflexiva. La actividad consiste en un trabajo sobre un computador paralelo concreto y en uso. Los alumnos tienen que aplicar los contenidos de la asignatura al computador paralelo buscando información sobre éste en publicaciones especializadas y en páginas web y documentación de fabricantes y vendedores. La actividad se ha evaluado mediante una encuesta de opinión. Los resultados de ésta reflejan que contribuye a alcanzar los objetivos esperados

El reto de la destreza del speaking en centros de educación secundaria monolingües de Andalucía

Spain, following the recommendations of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR, 2011), is undergoing a quick English-learning process in order to qualify the population as citizens of the world. The mastering of speaking skills in English is crucial to ease personal, social, political, professional and economic relationships. For this reason, the objectives of this paper are: analysing the current regional and national legislation regarding foreign language communication; understanding how relevant it is for the Andalusian population to speak fluently in English, given the magnitude of the international tourism industry in Andalusia and the current European socio-educational context; as well as knowing if Andalusian Secondary Education students are aware of this situation, and how comfortable they feel with their current oral-skills in English nowadays.España, siguiendo las recomendaciones del Marco Común Europeo de Referencia para las Lenguas (MCER, 2011), se encuentra inmersa en un rápido proceso de aprendizaje del inglés que permita a sus gentes convertirse en ciudadanos del mundo. El dominio del componente oral de esta lengua es fundamental para facilitar las relaciones sociales, laborales, políticas o económicas. Por ello, esta investigación establece los siguientes objetivos: analizar la legislación estatal y autonómica vigente con respecto a la comunicación en lenguas extranjeras; entender hasta qué punto es relevante para la población andaluza el hecho de poder hablar con fluidez en lengua inglesa dada la envergadura del turismo internacional en Andalucía y el contexto socioeducativo europeo actual; tratar de averiguar si los estudiantes de Educación Secundaria andaluces son conscientes de esta situación, y conocer cómo de cómodos se sienten hoy día con la práctica de la destreza oral o speaking en lengua inglesa

La enseñanza de lenguas extranjeras: propuestas de mejora

Those involved in the teaching of foreign languages in general, and in the teaching of English in particular, are aware of the challenges they face when it comes to doing their job. This article analyzes some of the main reasons why the process of teaching a foreign language should be revised. Concentrating specifically on Spain, possible solutions and strategies will be presented to combat previously discovered deficiencies. In this sense, it is considered that the analyzed proposals can be a reference for the successful study of the situation in relation to the provision of positive strategies and solutions. It is important to highlight that this analysis has been carried out after detecting a series of problems. The results are aimed at becoming one of the main engines that triggers an in-depth debate. This debate should lead to change the methodology, training, design, conception and, ultimately, the teaching of foreign languages in Spain.2018-1
