The Drought Monitor
There is a need for improved drought monitoring and assessment methods in the United States. Drought is the most costly natural disaster [Federal Emergency Management Agancy (FEMA 1995; Wilhite 2000)], but it is often neglected by developers of assessment and forecast products. Drought is more nebulous than other disasters and does not lend itself to traditional assessments or forecast methods. Its relatively slow onset and the complexity of its impacts are reasons for the new assessment methodology. Improvements in drought monitoring and forecasting techniques will allow for better preparation, lead to better management practices, and reduce the vulnerability of society to drought and its subsequent impacts.
The Drought Monitor (additional information available online at http://drought.unl/edu/dm) was created with the goal of tracking and displaying the magnitude and spatial extent of drought and its impacts across the United States. The Drought Monitor is produced weekly and classifies drought severity into four major categories, with a fifth category threshold assigned to locations on a map are determined from a number of indicators, or tools, blended with subjective interpretation
Mapping Agricultural Decision Making across the U.S. Corn Belt
Decision calendars help identify opportunities for inserting climate information into a decision process as well as points where other considerations might overrule use of the climate information. Developers of decision calendars are challenged, though, by a potentially infinite number of modifications required to address spatial variability in agricultural decision making. Variability in climate, soils, and agricultural production systems across a region may result in deviations in decision-making times
Dosimetry, clinical factors and medication intake influencing urinary symptoms after prostate radiotherapy: An analysis of data from the RADAR prostate radiotherapy trial
Purpose/Objective: To identify dosimetry, clinical factors and medication intake impacting urinary symptoms after prostate radiotherapy.
Material and Methods: Data describing clinical factors and bladder dosimetry (reduced with principal component (PC) analysis) for 754 patients treated with external beam radiotherapy accrued by TROG 03.04 RADAR prostate radiotherapy trial were available for analysis. Urinary symptoms (frequency, incontinence, dysuria and haematuria) were prospectively assessed using LENT-SOMA to a median of 72 months. The endpoints assessed were prevalence (grade≥1) at the end of radiotherapy (representing acute symptoms), at 18-, 36- and 54-month follow-ups (representing late symptoms) and peak late incidence including only grade≥2. Impact of factors were assessed using multivariate logistic regression models with correction for over-optimism.
Results: Baseline symptoms, non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus, age and PC1 (correlated to the mean dose) impact symptoms at \u3e1 timepoints. Associations at a single timepoint were found for cerebrovascular condition, ECOG status and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug intake. Peak incidence analysis shows the impact of baseline, bowel and cerebrovascular condition and smoking status.
Conclusions: The prevalence and incidence analysis provide a complementary view for urinary symptom prediction. Sustained impacts across time points were found for several factors while some associations were not repeated at different time points suggesting poorer or transient impact
DiLogics: Creating Web Automation Programs With Diverse Logics
Knowledge workers frequently encounter repetitive web data entry tasks, like
updating records or placing orders. Web automation increases productivity, but
translating tasks to web actions accurately and extending to new specifications
is challenging. Existing tools can automate tasks that perform the same logical
trace of UI actions (e.g., input text in each field in order), but do not
support tasks requiring different executions based on varied input conditions.
We present DiLogics, a programming-by-demonstration system that utilizes NLP to
assist users in creating web automation programs that handle diverse
specifications. DiLogics first semantically segments input data to structured
task steps. By recording user demonstrations for each step, DiLogics
generalizes the web macros to novel but semantically similar task requirements.
Our evaluation showed that non-experts can effectively use DiLogics to create
automation programs that fulfill diverse input instructions. DiLogics provides
an efficient, intuitive, and expressive method for developing web automation
programs satisfying diverse specifications
Adaptive Optics Spectroscopy: Preliminary Theoretical Results
We have done theoretical calculations and simulations for infrared
spectroscopy at the MMT 6.5 m with laser guide star AO, which provides almost
full sky coverage. The results show we can expect 40-60% of the photons from a
unresolved source within 0.2 arcsec diameter circle for J, H, K, L and M bands
under typical atmospheric seeing condition at 2.2 micron. Therefore, the
spectrograph entrance slit size should match the 0.2 arcsec image to obtain
high throughput. Higher resolution can be achieved by narrowing down the slit
size to match the diffraction-limited image core size of about 0.1 arcsec in
the infrared. However, the throughput will be correspondingly reduced by a
factor of two. Due to the limited atmospheric isoplanatic angle in the J, H and
K bands, the encircled photon percentage within 0.2 arcsec diameter drops from
40-60% when the object is at the laser pointing direction to 20-40% when the
object is about 30 arcsec away from the laser direction. Therefore, the useful
field of view for AO multiple object spectroscopy is about 60 arcsec. Further
studies of IR background (sky and thermal) and IR detector performance show
that spectral resolution of R = 2,000 can take full advantage of AO images
without much penalty due to the dark current of the IR detector and IR OH sky
emission lines.
We have also studied natural guide star AO spectroscopy. More details are in
the paper.Comment: Proceeding SPIE Conference on Adaptive Optics and Applications, 1997,
