Determination of the nature of the Cu coordination complexes formed in the presence of NO and NH3 within SSZ-13
Ammonia-selective catalytic reduction (NH3-SCR) using Cu zeolites is a well-established strategy for the abatement of NOx gases. Recent studies have demonstrated that Cu is particularly active when exchanged into the SSZ-13 zeolite, and its location in either the 6r or 8r renders it an excellent model system for fundamental studies. In this work, we examine the interaction of NH3-SCR relevant gases (NO and NH3) with the Cu2+ centers within the SSZ-13 structure, coupling powder diffraction (PD), X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAFS), and density functional theory (DFT). This combined approach revealed that, upon calcination, cooling and gas exposure Cu ions tend to locate in the 8r window. After NO introduction, Cu-ions are seen to coordinate to two framework oxygens and one NO molecule, resulting in a bent Cu-nitrosyl complex with a Cu-N-O bond angle of similar to 150 degrees. Whilst Cu seems to be partially reduced/changed in coordination state, NO is partially oxidized. On exposure to NH3 while the PD data suggest the Cu2+ ion occupies a similar position, simulation and XAFS pointed toward the formation of a Jahn-Teller distorted hexaamine complex [Cu(NH3)(6)](2+) in the center of the cha cage. These results have important implications in terms of uptake and storage of these reactive gases and potentially for the mechanisms involved in the NH3-SCR process
Council tax valuation band predicts breast feeding and socio-economic status in the ALSPAC study population
BACKGROUND: Breast-feeding rates in the UK are known to vary by maternal socio-economic status but the latter function is imperfectly defined. We test if CTVB (Council Tax Valuation Band – a categorical assessment of UK property values and amenities governing local tax levies) of maternal address predicts, in a large UK regional sample of births, (a) breast-feeding (b) personal and socio-economic attributes of the mothers. METHODS: Retrospective study of a subset (n.1390 selected at random) of the ALSPAC sample (Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children), a large, geographically defined cohort of mothers followed from early pregnancy to 8 weeks post-delivery. Outcome measures are attitudes to breast-feeding prior to delivery, breast-feeding intention and uptake, demographic and socio-economic attributes of the mothers, CTVB of maternal home address at the time of each birth. Logistic regression analysis, categorical tests. RESULTS: Study sample: 1360 women divided across the CTVBs – at least 155 in any band or band aggregation. CTVB predicted only one belief or attitude – that bottle-feeding was more convenient for the mother. However only 31% of 'CTVB A infants' are fully breast fed at 4 weeks of life whereas for 'CTVB E+ infants' the rate is 57%. CTVB is also strongly associated with maternal social class, home conditions, parental educational attainment, family income and smoking habit. CONCLUSION: CTVB predicts breast-feeding rates and links them with social circumstances. CTVB could be used as the basis for accurate resource allocation for community paediatric services: UK breast-feeding rates are low and merit targeted promotion
Human-computer interaction for development (HCI4D): who, what, where, when and how
There is increasing interest in finding ways to bridge the "Digital Divide" by using the techniques, approaches and mindset of human-computer interaction (HCI) or user-centred design (UCD) when developing new technology for use in the so-called "Developing" world. This new sub-discipline, called variously “HCI for Development” (HCI4D), "Human-Centered Computing for Development" (HCC4D), or “UCD for Development (UCD4D) among other things, is growing rapidly as an exciting mix of students, academics and practitioners are finding ways to collaborate and developing a new community of practice. This topic, introduced in the early part of this century [6], is the basis of a series of workshops that have been held at a variety of conferences and venues [1,2,3,4,5,8] in order to be inclusive and to build the community. These workshops have succeeded beyond the organisers' wildest dreams and have lead to a vital community that is actively sharing and working together to exchange and critique ideas, share funding resources, develop methods, and engage in critical discourse about the philosophical, ethical, technical, organizational, academic and practical factors that will influence its long-term success. Within the HCI community more broadly, HCI4D answers the recent call to reflect "human values in the digital age" [7]. However, in order to build capacity outside of our own subcommunity, wider participative engagement is needed. The purpose of this workshop is to develop and share that vision. It opens up HCI4D to all, by presenting a series of case studies and expertise from a variety of people, with two intentions.
• The first is to share experiences within the HCI4D community, to combine knowledge and expertise, and provide cross-fertilization of ideas and concepts.
• The second is to run HCI4D activities in a grounded, accessible manner, so that people who are not involved
in the activities can come along and find all about it.
• The third is to examine in detail different organizational arrangements that can be applied in seeking to develop the role of HCI in economic and community development activity.
It is therefore in a middle ground between an academic workshop and the educational approach of a tutorial

A Geometric Characterization of the Power of Finite Adaptability in Multistage Stochastic and Adaptive Optimization
In this paper, we show a significant role that geometric properties of uncertainty sets, such as symmetry, play in determining the power of robust and finitely adaptable solutions in multistage stochastic and adaptive optimization problems. We consider a fairly general class of multistage mixed integer stochastic and adaptive optimization problems and propose a good approximate solution policy with performance guarantees that depend on the geometric properties of the uncertainty sets. In particular, we show that a class of finitely adaptable solutions is a good approximation for both the multistage stochastic and the adaptive optimization problem. A finitely adaptable solution generalizes the notion of a static robust solution and specifies a small set of solutions for each stage; the solution policy implements the best solution from the given set, depending on the realization of the uncertain parameters in past stages. Therefore, it is a tractable approximation to a fully adaptable solution for the multistage problems. To the best of our knowledge, these are the first approximation results for the multistage problem in such generality. Drivers and facilitators of the illegal killing of elephants across 64 African sites
Ivory poaching continues to threaten African elephants. We (1) used criminology theory and literature evidence to generate hypotheses about factors that may drive, facilitate or motivate poaching, (2) identified datasets representing these factors, and (3) tested those factors with strong hypotheses and sufficient data quality for empirical associations with poaching. We advance on previous analyses of correlates of elephant poaching by using additional poaching data and leveraging new datasets for previously untested explanatory variables. Using data on 10 286 illegally killed elephants detected at 64 sites in 30 African countries (2002–2020), we found strong evidence to support the hypotheses that the illegal killing of elephants is associated with poor national governance, low law enforcement capacity, low household wealth and health, and global elephant ivory prices. Forest elephant populations suffered higher rates of illegal killing than savannah elephants. We found only weak evidence that armed conflicts may increase the illegal killing of elephants, and no evidence for effects of site accessibility, vegetation density, elephant population density, precipitation or site area. Results suggest that addressing wider systemic challenges of human development, corruption and consumer demand would help reduce poaching, corroborating broader work highlighting these more ultimate drivers of the global illegal wildlife trade
Carbon inputs from Miscanthus displace older soil organic carbon without inducing priming
The carbon (C) dynamics of a bioenergy system are key to correctly defining its viability as a sustainable alternative to conventional fossil fuel energy sources. Recent studies have quantified the greenhouse gas mitigation potential of these bioenergy crops, often concluding that C sequestration in soils plays a primary role in offsetting emissions through energy generation. Miscanthus is a particularly promising bioenergy crop and research has shown that soil C stocks can increase by more than 2 t C ha−1 yr−1. In this study, we use a stable isotope (13C) technique to trace the inputs and outputs from soils below a commercial Miscanthus plantation in Lincolnshire, UK, over the first 7 years of growth after conversion from a conventional arable crop. Results suggest that an unchanging total topsoil (0–30 cm) C stock is caused by Miscanthus additions displacing older soil organic matter. Further, using a comparison between bare soil plots (no new Miscanthus inputs) and undisturbed Miscanthus controls, soil respiration was seen to be unaffected through priming by fresh inputs or rhizosphere. The temperature sensitivity of old soil C was also seen to be very similar with and without the presence of live root biomass. Total soil respiration from control plots was dominated by Miscanthus-derived emissions with autotrophic respiration alone accounting for ∼50 % of CO2. Although total soil C stocks did not change significantly over time, the Miscanthus-derived soil C accumulated at a rate of 860 kg C ha−1 yr−1 over the top 30 cm. Ultimately, the results from this study indicate that soil C stocks below Miscanthus plantations do not necessarily increase during the first 7 years

Anti-tumor necrosis factor (anti-TNF) therapies are the most widely used biologic drugs for treating immune-mediated diseases, but repeated administration can induce the formation of anti-drug antibodies. The ability to identify patients at increased risk for development of anti-drug antibodies would facilitate selection of therapy and use of preventative strategies.This article is freely available via Open Access.
