    ON THE COMPARISON OF TIME SERIES USING SUBSAMPLING

    In this paper we propose a procedure based on the subsampling techniques for the comparison of stationary time series that are not necessarily independent. We study a test based on the Euclidean distance between the autocorrelation functions of two series. Consistency of the proposed method is established. We present a Monte Carlo study with the size and the power of the proposed test.

    Phylodynamics of H5N1 Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza in Europe, 2005-2010: Potential for Molecular Surveillance of New Outbreaks.

    Previous Bayesian phylogeographic studies of H5N1 highly pathogenic avian influenza viruses (HPAIVs) explored the origin and spread of the epidemic from China into Russia, indicating that HPAIV circulated in Russia prior to its detection there in 2005. In this study, we extend this research to explore the evolution and spread of HPAIV within Europe during the 2005-2010 epidemic, using all available sequences of the hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA) gene regions that were collected in Europe and Russia during the outbreak. We use discrete-trait phylodynamic models within a Bayesian statistical framework to explore the evolution of HPAIV. Our results indicate that the genetic diversity and effective population size of HPAIV peaked between mid-2005 and early 2006, followed by drastic decline in 2007, which coincides with the end of the epidemic in Europe. Our results also suggest that domestic birds were the most likely source of the spread of the virus from Russia into Europe. Additionally, estimates of viral dispersal routes indicate that Russia, Romania, and Germany were key epicenters of these outbreaks. Our study quantifies the dynamics of a major European HPAIV pandemic and substantiates the ability of phylodynamic models to improve molecular surveillance of novel AIVs

    Spin-orbit induced chirality of Andreev states in Josephson junctions

    We study Josephson junctions (JJs) in which the region between the two superconductors is a multichannel system with Rashba spin-orbit coupling (SOC) where a barrier or a quantum point contact (QPC) is present. These systems might present unconventional Josephson effects such as Josephson currents for zero phase difference or critical currents that \textit{depend on} the current direction. Here, we discuss how the spin polarizing properties of the system in the normal state affect the spin characteristic of the Andreev bound states inside the junction. This results in a strong correlation between the spin of the Andreev states and the direction in which they transport Cooper pairs. While the current-phase relation for the JJ at zero magnetic field is qualitatively unchanged by SOC, in the presence of a weak magnetic field a strongly anisotropic behavior and the mentioned anomalous Josephson effects follow. We show that the situation is not restricted to barriers based on constrictions such as QPCs and should generically arise if in the normal system the direction of the carrier's spin is linked to its direction of motion.Comment: 19 pages, 9 figures.     Accurate radial velocity and metallicity of the Large Magellanic Cloud old globular clusters NGC1928 and NGC1939

    We present results obtained from spectroscopic observations of red giants located in the fields of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) globular clusters (GCs) NGC1928 and NGC1939. We used the GMOS and AAOmega+2dF spectrographs to obtain spectra centred on the Ca II triplet, from which we derived individual radial velocities (RVs) and metallicities. From cluster members we derived mean RVs of RVNGC1928 = 249.58±4.65 km s-1 and RVNGC1939 = 258.85±2.08 km s-1, and mean metallicities of [Fe/H]NGC1928 = -1.30±0.15 dex and [Fe/H]NGC1939 = -2.00±0.15 dex. We found that both GCs have RVs and positions consistent with being part of the LMC disc, so that we rule out any possible origin, but in the same galaxy. By computing the best solution of a disc that fully contains each GC, we obtained circular velocities for the 15 known LMC GCs. We found that 11/15 of the GCs share the LMC rotation derived from HST and Gaia DR2 proper motions. This outcome reveals that the LMC disc existed since the very early epoch of the galaxy formation and experienced the steep relatively fast chemical enrichment shown by its GC metallicities. The four remaining GCs turned out to have circular velocities not compatible with an in situ cluster formation, but rather with being stripped from the SMC.Fil: Piatti, Andres Eduardo.     Orbital-Free Molecular Dynamics Simulations of Melting in Na8 and Na20: Melting in Steps

    The melting-like transitions of Na8 and Na20 are investigated by ab initio constant energy molecular dynamics simulations, using a variant of the Car-Parrinello method which employs an explicit electronic kinetic energy functional of the density, thus avoiding the use of one-particle orbitals. Several melting indicators are evaluated in order to determine the nature of the various transitions, and compared with other simulations. Both Na8 and Na20 melt over a wide temperature range. For Na8, a transition is observed to begin at approx. 110 K, between a rigid phase and a phase involving isomerizations between the different permutational isomers of the ground state structure. The ``liquid'' phase is completely established at approx. 220 K. For Na20, two transitions are observed: the first, at approx. 110 K, is associated with isomerization transitions between those permutational isomers of the ground state structure which are obtained by interchanging the positions of the surface-like atoms; the second, at approx. 160 K, involves a structural transition from the ground state isomer to a new set of isomers with the surface molten.     Differences Between Adapted Populations of Dactylis Glomerata L. in Argentina

    Nine adapted populations of orchardgrass (Dactylis glomerata L.) were collected from different grassland environments of Buenos Aires Province, Argentina, in order to investigate genetic differences between and within populations. Fifty plants per population were clonally propagated and transplanted as spaced-plant trial in a randomized design with three replicates. The results indicated large differences between and within populations for most attributes measured. Attributes related with the expression of foliar diseases and seed yield had the highest broad-sense heritability values. The results suggest that the genetic variation found in the adapted populations of orchardgrass has been mainly determined by the environmental heterogeneity of the original habitats
