    Separation Techniques of Partial Discharges and Electrical Noise Sources: A Review of Recent Progress

    Partial discharge (PD) monitoring is one of the most used tools for diagnosing the condition of electrical equipment and machines that operate normally at high voltage levels. Ideally, PD identification can be easily done if there is a single source acting over the electrical asset during the measurement. However, in industrial environments, it is common to find the presence of multiple sources acting simultaneously, which hinders the identification process, due to sources of greater amplitude hiding the presence of other types of sources of lesser amplitude that could eventually be much more harmful to the insulation system. In this sense, the separation of PD through the use of clustering techniques allows individual source recognition once they have been clearly separated. This article describes the main clustering techniques that have been used over time to separate PD sources and electrical noise. The results obtained by the different authors in the utilization of each technique demonstrates good performance in terms of separation

    Discovery of (R)-2-Amino-6-borono-2-(2-(piperidin-1-yl)ethyl)hexanoic Acid and Congeners As Highly Potent Inhibitors of Human Arginases I and II for Treatment of Myocardial Reperfusion Injury

    Recent efforts to identify treatments for myocardial ischemia reperfusion injury have resulted in the discovery of a novel series of highly potent α,α-disubstituted amino acid-based arginase inhibitors. The lead candidate, (R)-2-amino-6-borono-2-(2-(piperidin-1-yl)ethyl)hexanoic acid, compound 9, inhibits human arginases I and II with IC50s of 223 and 509 nM, respectively, and is active in a recombinant cellular assay overexpressing human arginase I (CHO cells). It is 28% orally bioavailable and significantly reduces the infarct size in a rat model of myocardial ischemia/reperfusion injury. Herein, we report the design, synthesis, and structure−activity relationships (SAR) for this novel series of inhibitors along with pharmacokinetic and in vivo efficacy data for compound 9 and X-ray crystallography data for selected lead compounds cocrystallized with arginases I and II.Fil: Van Zandt, Michael C..     Study of a Low-Cost Piezoelectric Sensor for Three Phase Induction Motor Load Estimation

    Due the complexity of control and automation networks in modern industries, sensor-based systems stand out as effective approaches for failure detection in electrical and mechanical machines. This kind of intervention has a high operational value in industrial scenarios, once it can avoid corrective maintenance stops, i.e., before the failure reaches a high level of severity and compromises the machine. Consequently, the development of sensors applied to non-destructive techniques (NDT) for failure monitoring in electrical machines has become a recurrent theme in recent studies. In this context, this paper investigates the application of low-cost piezoelectric sensors for vibration analysis, which is an NDT that has already proved to be efficient for the detection of many structural anomalies in induction motors. Further, the proposed work presents a low-cost alternative approach for expensive commercial sensors, which will make this NDT more attractive for industrial applications. To describe the piezoelectric sensor frequency response, a pencil lead break (PLB) test was performed. After this validation, the Root Mean Square (RMS) value from the voltage samples obtained in the test bench was used as a signal processing method. A comparison between the results for different levels of mechanical load attached to the machine shaft indicated not only the successful performance of the low-cost sensors for load estimation purposes, but also showed that oversized motors may present higher vibration levels in some components that could cause mechanical wearing

    Structure/function studies on cytoskeletal proteins in Dictyostelium amoebae as a paradigm

    The actin cytoskeleton in motile non-muscle cells is being regulated by a large number of actin-binding proteins. A deeper insight into the complex nature of the dynamic rearrangements of the microfilament system during cell movement requires an experimental system that allows the combined application of biochemical, biophysical, cell biological and molecular methods. Dictyostelium amoebae are well suited especially for a genetic approach because they are amenable to gene disruption, antisense and gene tagging techniques. The actin-binding proteins profilin, hisactophilin and protovillin are being described in this context as typical examples that either bind to G-actin, or anchor the actin cytoskeleton to the plasma membrane, or are structurally similar to vertebrate proteins but distinct in their functions

    Reduction of anterior cingulate in adults with urban violence- related PTSD

    Background: To evaluate differences in limbic structure volume of subjects exposed to urban violence during adulthood, between those who developed posttraumatic stress disorder (with PTSD) and resilient matched controls (without PTSD).Methods: Limbic volumetric measures of 32 subjects with PTSD and 32 subjects without PTSD who underwent brain MRI were analyzed in an epidemiological study in the city of São Paulo. the hippocampus, amygdala, cingulate, and parahipocampal gyri volumes were estimated using FreeSurfer software. We also investigated the association between limbic volumetric measurements, symptom's severity, and early life stress history (measure by Early Trauma Inventory - ETI).Results: Subjects with PTSD presented reduced volume of the right rostral part of the anterior cingulate, compared to subjects without PTSD, after controlling for iraracranial volume, Eft and depressive symptoms. Subjects with PTSD presented larger bilateral hippocampus and right amygdala, but secondary to the higher EU in PTSD group there was a positive correlation between with bilateral hippocampus, bilateral amygclala, and left parahippocampus.Limitations.: First, the cross-sectional study design precludes causal interpretation of limbic structure reduction in PTSD, consequence of PTSD, or other life events. Finally, since the sample size was not sufficiently large, we could not observe whether or not limbic structure volume could be related to the type of trauma.Conclusions: the present study provides evidence of a reduced anterior cingulate volume in subjects with PTSD than in resilient subjects exposed to urban violence. Enlargement of hippocampus and amygdala volume was observed in subjects with PTSD, however secondary to early trauma experience. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V.
