Mulching and soil tillage influence on the thermal behaviour of a Luvisol surface layer
Important energy exchanges at soil surface regulate the thermal environment within top soil layer and the boundary layer above it. By this reason, the application of mulches or the modelling of micro relief by soil tillage are common practises to modify the thermal regime of a soil. The aim of this study is to compare the effect on thermal behaviour of a Luvisol resulting of soil tillage and the application of stubble mulch and, different amounts of straw mulch. For this purpose, experiments were performed from January to May 2007 in a field sowed with winter wheat. Temperatures were measured with copper-constantan (Type T) thermocouples placed over straw and over stubble, at soil surface and at 2, 4 and 8 cm depth. Temperatures above canopy were also recorded.
Daily mean temperatures and thermal amplitudes in the top soil layer covered by straw mulch were smaller than those verified either by stubble mulch or with soil tillage. Daily minimum temperatures in mobilized plots or covered by stubble mulch were smaller than those verified in plots covered by straw mulch, therefore being the former treatments more susceptible to frost than the later ones. Thermal differences between the four plots decreased significantly with wheat growth. Implications of these techniques of soil temperature control for crop growth are also discussed

Maternal employment and childhood nutrition in Ecuador
Treballs Finals del Màster d'Economia, Facultat d'Economia i Empresa, Universitat de Barcelona, Curs: 2020-2021, Tutor: Joan GilThis study explores the association of maternal employment on childhood nutrition in Ecuador by understanding the trade-off between the maternal time devoted to work and childcaring. I use exogenous regional variation of the labor market as an instrument. Using the National Health and Nutrition Survey 2018, I estimate the causal effect of maternal labor supply on children’s nutrition outcomes based on anthropometrics measurements. Maternal employment increases the probability of having stunted children, while I have not found any effect of maternal employment on children suffering from wasting, underweight and overweight. The results are robust and account for possible endogeneity sources
Relief and sea proximity effects on crop reference evapotranspiration in the irrigation área of Roxo
do Alentejo e Santiago do Cacém.
Alentejo.
Continuous cultures of Clostridium acetobutylicum: culture stability and low-grade glycerol utilisation
Continuous cultures of two strains of Clostridium acetobutylicum were stable for over 70 d when grown on glucose/ glycerol mixtures. Butanol was the major fermentation end-product, accounting for 43 to 62% (w/w) of total products. Low-grade glycerol [65% (w/v) purity] could replace commercial glycerol [87% (w/v) purity], leading to
a similar fermentation pattern: a butanol yield of 0.34 (mol/mol), a butanol productivity of 0.42 g l−1 h−1 and a 84%
(w/w) glycerol consumptionwere attained when cultures were grown at pH 6 and D = 0.05 h−1; butanol accounted for 94% (w/w) of total solvents. These values are among the highest reported in literature for C. acetobutylicum simple chemostats
A humidade do
as mesmas sondas e profundidades anteriores. Atendendo às limitações das sondas
PR1 em solos argilosos, os resultados são
analisados comparativamente.
secura). O tratamento M evidencia maior

Maternal employment and childhood malnutrition in Ecuador
This paper estimates the causal impact of maternal employment on several childhood malnutrition outcomes in Ecuador, to understand the trade-off between the time mothers devote to work and child-caring activities. We use exogenous regional variation in maternal labour market conditions to account for the potential endogeneity of mothers’ employment. Using the Ecuadorian National Health and Nutrition Survey 2018 and the Living Conditions Survey 2014, the instrumental variable estimations indicated that maternal employment increases the probability of having stunted children by between 4.3 and 21 percent, while no significant effect was found on children suffering from wasting, underweight or overweight. We found that children with more educated, richer mothers appeared to be the most negatively affected. The results were robust to several robustness checks
Thermally assisted hydrolysis and alkylation of lignins in the presence of tetra-alkylammonium hydroxides
Three different milled lignins isolated from bamboo, pine and beech, corresponding to the three different structural groups, have been subjected to pyrolysis in the presence of tetramethylammonium hydroxide (TMAH) and tetrabutylammonium hydroxide (TBAH). Pyrolysis of the lignins in the presence of TMAH releases the methyl esters and methyl ethers of the different lignin monomers. Several moieties bearing carboxylic acid groups, not previously detected using pyrolytic techniques, could be released from the three lignins, suggesting that the presence of these moieties in the lignin structure have been underestimated. The authors wish to thank the CICyT (Spanish Direction General de Investigation Cientifica y Tecnica; Project PB91-0074) for financial support.Peer Reviewe
Time evolution of the behaviour of Brazilian legislative Representatives using a complex network approach
The follow up of Representative behavior after elections is imperative for a
democratic Representative system, at the very least to punish betrayal with no
re-election. Our goal was to show how to follow Representatives' and how to
show behavior in real situations and observe trends in political crises
including the onset of game changing political instabilities. We used
correlation and correlation distance matrices of Brazilian Representative votes
during four presidential terms. Re-ordering these matrices with Minimal
Spanning Trees displays the dynamical formation of clusters for the sixteen
year period, which includes one Presidential impeachment. The reordered
matrices, colored by correlation strength and by the parties clearly show the
origin of observed clusters and their evolution over time. When large clusters
provide government support cluster breaks, political instability arises, which
could lead to an impeachment, a trend we observed three years before the
Brazilian President was impeached. We believe this method could be applied to
foresee other political storms.Comment: 11 pages, 4 Figure
