El impacto de los conjuntos de trilleros en el registro paleolítico de la Meseta. Una aproximación etnoarqueológica

This paper analyzes the problem of the many archaeological assemblages found in the Castilian Meseta and created by the recent and contemporary activity of threshing cereals using wooden boards with stone tools (‘trillero’), which can be misinterpreted as of Palaeolithic age. The process of threshing using quartzite stones is systematically described, as well as the knapping technology used to make the cutting tools and the geological and archaeological formation of the assemblages.

This paper presents a part of an archaeological research project focused on the study of the first human occupations between Eresma and Riaza rivers (Central Spain). In this work, we show the first results of the geoarchaeological analysis of the Abrigo del Molino karstic deposit (Eresma river, Segovia). It includes a sedimentological and geoarchaeological analysis of the site. Also, a preliminary analysis of lithics and faunal remains documented in the profile of the rockshelter was developed. It is important to highlight the presence of a flint mousterian assemblage which includes levallois knapping method. Finally, we present the results of an OSL dating collected at the top of the archaeological sequence, which lets us to asign it to Middle Paleolithic period

Exercising a firm’s growth options: A portfolio approach

    Get PDF
Producción CientíficaThis paper investigates a firm’s decision to exercise its growth options within the current scope of business. We contend that the point at which a firm chooses whether or not to exercise such options depends on several strategic characteristics associated to its portfolio of businesses (i.e. level of diversification, average volatility of its current business, relatedness among them, and rivalry in its core business). Using a sample of U.S. companies from 1998 to 2013, we find evidence that a firm’s level of diversification and the volatility of its current business deter immediate growth option exercise. In contrast, relatedness and rivalry in its core business trigger growth options exercise. Our portfolio perspective differs from the bulk of the literature on real options, which evaluates each growth option exercise in isolation, and contributes to furthering knowledge on the drivers underlying a diversified firm's strategic investments.Junta de Castilla y León (grant VA260U14)Gobierno de la Comunidad de Madrid - Fondo Social Europeo (grant EARLYFIN, S2015/HUM-3353)Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación (grants ECO2017-84864-P and ECO2017-85356-P

Environmental assessment: Landform Classification for Land Use Planning in Developed Areas: An Example in Segovia Province (Central Spain)

Landform-based physiographic maps, also called land systems inventories, have been widely and successfully used in undeveloped/rural areas in several locations, such as Australia, the western United States, Canada, and the British ex-colonies. This paper presents a case study of their application in a developed semi-urban/suburban area (Segovia, Spain) for land use planning purposes. The paper focuses in the information transfer process, showing how land use decision-makers, such as governments, planners, town managers, etc., can use the information developed from these maps to assist them. The paper also addresses several issues important to the development and use of this information, such as the goals of modem physiography, the types of landform-based mapping products, the problem of data management in developed areas, and the distinctions among data, interpretations, and decisions.Depto. de Geodinámica, Estratigrafía y PaleontologíaFac. de Ciencias GeológicasTRUEpu

Enzyme-Loaded Gel Core Nanostructured Lipid Carriers to Improve Treatment of Lysosomal Storage Diseases: Formulation and In Vitro Cellular Studies of Elosulfase Alfa-Loaded Systems

    Get PDF
Mucopolysaccharidosis IVA (Morquio A) is a rare inherited metabolic disease caused by deficiency of the lysosomal enzyme N-acetylgalatosamine-6-sulfate-sulfatase (GALNS). Until now, treatments employed included hematopoietic stem cell transplantation and enzyme replacement therapy (ERT); the latter being the most commonly used to treat mucopolysaccharidoses, but with serious disadvantages due to rapid degradation and clearance. The purpose of this study was to develop and evaluate the potential of nanostructured lipid carriers (NLCs) by encapsulating elosulfase alfa and preserving its enzyme activity, leading to enhancement of its biological effect in chondrocyte cells. A pegylated elosulfase alfa-loaded NLC was characterized in terms of size, ζ potential, structural lipid composition (DSC and XRD), morphology (TEM microscopy), and stability in human plasma. The final formulation was freeze-dried by selecting the appropriate cryoprotective agent. Viability assays confirmed that NLCs were non-cytotoxic to human fibroblasts. Imaging techniques (confocal and TEM) were used to assess the cellular uptake of NLCs loaded with elosulfase alfa. This study provides evidence that the encapsulated drug exhibits enzyme activity inside the cells. Overall, this study provides a new approach regarding NLCs as a promising delivery system for the encapsulation of elosulfase alfa or other enzymes and the preservation of its activity and stability to be used in enzymatic replacement therapy (ERT).This research was funded by Xunta de Galicia, grant number GRC2013/015 and GPC2017/015S
