Flujos migratorios y cambio social en la Región de Murcia

This paper deals with the different international migratory flows arrived to the region the Murcia since the mid eighties in the twentieth century up to the present. The article examines the changes in this three decades of economic migrations, associated with demographic characteristics, family strategies, spatial distribution and residential insertion, and the labour trajectories, connecting it afterward specifically with the processes of integration and the inter-ethnics relationships. These processes are illustrated with the analysis of the census databases and with some examples obtained from different qualitative field works. The paper claims to show that immigrant workers share histories of extreme class stratification and disenfranchisement created by both legal and extra-legal discrimination and exploitation.Este artículo trata sobre los diferentes flujos migratorios internacionales que han llegado a la Región de Murcia desde mediados de los 80 hasta la actualidad. El artículo examina los cambios en estas tres décadas de migraciones económicas, asociados con características demográficas, estrategias familiares, distribución espacial e inserción residencial, y las trayectorias laborales, vinculando estas cuestiones con los procesos de integración y las relaciones interétnicas. Estos procesos son ilustrados con el análisis de fuentes censales y con algunos ejemplos obtenidos de diferentes trabajos de campo cualitativos. El artículo pretende mostrar que los trabajadores inmigrantes conforman trayectorias de acusada estratificación de clase y ausencia de derechos creadas por formas de discriminación y explotación tanto legales como extralegales

Social research into the phenomenon of the captivity of the Greek or Spur-thighed Tortoise in the Southeast of the Iberian Peninsula

[Resumo] No presente manuscrito investígase a dimensión social da conservación de especies a través do estudo do fenómeno da catividade da tartaruga moura (Testudo graeca) no sueste ibérico. Para iso utilizaron técnicas cuantitativas e cualitativas de investigación social, en concreto, enquisas a poboación autóctona e a novos residentes do turismo internacional e entrevistas en profundidade a colectivos que manteñen tartarugas cativas e a aqueles implicados na conservación e xestión da especie. Estas técnicas permitiron cuantificar a situación actual e as tendencias a coleccionar e posuír tartarugas en catividade, permitiron determinar as motivacións destas prácticas e as diferentes representacións sociais que se manteñen cara á especie, así como coñecer os posicionamentos existentes cara á conservación da especie. A partir destes resultados danse recomendacións de xestión e intervención social para a conservación da tartaruga moura no sueste ibérico e a xestión da poboación cativa de tartaruga moura.[Abstract] In this document the social dimension of the captivity in the Southeast of the Iberian Peninsula of the Greek or Spur-thighed tortoise (Testudo graeca) is a subject of research. In order to do this, quantitative and qualitative techniques of social research have been used, specifically through questionnaires amongst the local population and new residents who reside there as a result of international tourism, and intensive interviews with the groups of people who hold tortoises in captivity and with those who are involved in the protection and control of the species. Such techniques have allowed us to quantify the current situation and the trends for the catching and keeping this species in captivity, as well as to determine the motivation behind such practices and the various social representations held towards the species, as well as the existing points of view held towards the protection of the species. From these results recommendations are given with regards to the management and social intervention in order to protect the Greek or Spur-thighed tortoise in the Southeast of the Iberian Peninsula and the control of the poplation in captivity of the Greek or Spur-thighed tortoise

Immigrant workers in agriculture in Murcia: reflections on crisis, immigration and agricultural labor

En las últimas décadas, España ha basado su crecimiento económico en sectores intensivos en mano de obra, caracterizados por condiciones laborales precarias, donde los trabajadores inmigrantes han jugado un papel fundamental ante la escasez de mano de obra autóctona. El artículo reflexiona sobre los vínculos entre uno de estos sectores, la agricultura intensiva de exportación, y el empleo de trabajadores extranjeros, con especial atención a la segregación por género y etnia de este mercado de trabajo, las condiciones laborales de los jornaleros inmigrantes y al impacto de la actual crisis económica sobre el empleo en este sector.The Spanish economic growth in recent decades has been based on labor-intensive economic sectors (construction industry, tourism-related services and export agriculture). In these sectors, characterized by precarious labor conditions, migrant workers have played a key role as a labor force available and underpaid. Almaceneras. Gender and work in fruit processing plants in the Region of Murcia

La creciente importancia de las cadenas globales en la producción agrícola para fresco ha convertido los almacenes de manipulado de frutas y hortalizas en espacios centrales para las estrategias de acumulación de la agroindustria. Las innovaciones tecnológicas y organizativas asociadas a esta nueva centralidad se producen, sin embargo, en espacios de trabajo fuertemente segmentados y desvalorizados. Espacios que han tendido a movilizar fuerza de trabajo vulnerable, como aquella conformada por mujeres, generalmente en estrecha relación con la posición subordinada que éstas ocupan en las comunidades locales y los hogares en que viven. La feminización del empleo en los almacenes ha contribuido a conformarlo como una actividad estable pero discontinua, central pero precaria, postfordista pero minusvalorada socialmente. En la vida de las almaceneras, estas lógicas introducen una específica itinerancia entre el espacio productivo y reproductivo, una temporalidad cíclica y discontinua, que se traduce en un cultura y una identidad laboral particulares. El objetivo de este artículo es indagar en estas cuestiones a partir del estudio de la fruticultura de exportación de la Vega Alta del Segura, en la Región de Murcia. Para ello nos centraremos, de un lado, en el proceso de feminización del empleo en los almacenes de manipulado y, de otro, en las culturas e identidades laborales de las mujeres que trabajan en estos almacenes.Packaging warehouses have become central points for accumulation strategies of agribusiness, due to the growing importance of global chains in fruits and vegetables production for fresh. Technological and organizational innovations associated with this process take place, however, in segmented and devalued workspaces. Packing warehouses have tended to use vulnerable work force, mainly women, in close relationship with the subordinate role they occupy in their households and communities. Because of the feminization, work in the packing warehouses is an activity stable but discontinuous, central but precarious, post-fordist but socially undervalued. In the life of women working in the packing stores, her job involves into a roaming between productive and reproductive space, a cyclical and discontinuous temporality, which brings about a culture and a particular work identity. In this paper, we analyze these issues from a case study: fruit growing export of Vega Alta del Segura, in the region of Murcia. To do this, we will focus on in the process of feminization of work in packing warehouses and in cultures and work identities of women in these workplaces
