Methemoglobinemia: An unusual cause of postoperative cyanosis
AbstractMethemoglobinemia, although rare, must be considered in surgical patients presenting with acute respiratory distress and cyanosis. We report two cases of methemoglobinemia in patients undergoing aortic reconstruction. The first patient developed methemoglobinemia while on a nitroglycerin infusion, and the second after receiving benzocaine spray before intubation. Both patients were treated with methylene blue and ascorbic acid, with resolution of their hypoxia and cyanosis. The Sex and Race Specific Relationship between Anthropometry and Body Fat Composition Determined from Computed Tomography: Evidence from the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis.
BackgroundFew studies have investigated the relationship of anthropometric measurements with computed tomography (CT) body fat composition, and even fewer determined if these relationships differ by sex and race.MethodsCT scans from 1,851 participants in the population based Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis were assessed for visceral and subcutaneous fat areas by semi-automated segmentation of body compartments. Regression models were used to investigate relationships for anthropometry with visceral and subcutaneous fat separately by sex and race/ethnicity.ResultsParticipants were 50% female, 41% Caucasian, 13% Asian, 21% African American, and 25% Hispanic. For visceral fat, the positive relationship with weight (p = 0.028), waist circumference (p<0.001), waist to hip ratio (p<0.001), and waist to height ratio (p = 0.05) differed by sex, with a steeper slope for men. That is, across the range of these anthropometric measures the rise in visceral fat is faster for men than for women. Additionally, there were differences by race/ethnicity in the relationship with height (p<0.001), weight (p<0.001), waist circumference (p<0.001), hip circumference (p = 0.006), and waist to hip ratio (p = 0.001) with the Hispanic group having shallower slopes. For subcutaneous fat, interaction by sex was found for all anthropometric indices at p<0.05, but not for race/ethnicity.ConclusionThe relationship between anthropometry and underlying adiposity differs by sex and race/ethnicity. When anthropometry is used as a proxy for visceral fat in research, sex-specific models should be used
Nematic-Wetted Colloids in the Isotropic Phase: Pairwise Interaction, Biaxiality and Defects
We calculate the interaction between two spherical colloidal particles
embedded in the isotropic phase of a nematogenic liquid. The surface of the
particles induces wetting nematic coronas that mediate an elastic interaction.
In the weak wetting regime, we obtain exact results for the interaction energy
and the texture, showing that defects and biaxiality arise, although they are
not topologically required. We evidence rich behaviors, including the
possibility of reversible colloidal aggregation and dispersion. Complex
anisotropic self-assembled phases might be formed in dense suspensions.Comment: 4 pages, 6 figure

Investigating the linkage between mesopic spatial summation and variations in retinal ganglion cell density across the central visual field
PURPOSE: The relationship between perimetric stimulus area and Ricco's area (RA) determines measured thresholds and the sensitivity of perimetry to retinal disease. The nature of this relationship, in addition to effect of retinal ganglion cell (RGC) number on this, is currently unknown for the adaptation conditions of mesopic microperimetry. In this study, achromatic mesopic spatial summation was measured across the central visual field to estimate RA with the number of RGCs underlying RA also being established. METHODS: Achromatic luminance thresholds were measured for six incremental spot stimuli (0.009-2.07 deg2 ) and 190.4 ms duration, at four locations, each at 2.5°, 5° and 10° eccentricity in five healthy observers (mean age 61.4 years) under mesopic conditions (background 1.58 cd/m2 ). RA was estimated using two-phase regression analysis with the number of RGCs underlying RA being calculated using normative histological RGC counts. RESULTS: Ricco's area exhibited a small but statistically insignificant increase between 2.5° and 10° eccentricity. Compared with photopic conditions, RA was larger, with the difference between RA and the Goldmann III stimulus (0.43°) being minimised. RGC number underlying RA was also higher than reported for photopic conditions (median 70 cells, IQR 36-93), with no significant difference being observed across test locations. CONCLUSIONS: Ricco's area and the number of RGCs underlying RA do not vary significantly across the central visual field in mesopic conditions. However, RA is larger and more similar to the standard perimetric Goldmann III stimulus under mesopic compared with photopic adaptation conditions. Further work is required to determine if compensatory enlargements in RA occur in age-related macular degeneration, to establish the optimal stimulus parameters for AMD-specific microperimetry
A two-species continuum model for aeolian sand ripples
We formulate a continuum model for aeolian sand ripples consisting of two
species of grains: a lower layer of relatively immobile clusters, with an upper
layer of highly mobile grains moving on top. We predict analytically the ripple
wavelength, initial ripple growth rate and threshold saltation flux for ripple
formation. Numerical simulations show the evolution of realistic ripple
profiles from initial surface roughness via ripple growth and merger.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figure
Ising Expansion for the Hubbard Model
We develop series expansions for the ground state properties of the Hubbard
model, by introducing an Ising anisotropy into the Hamiltonian. For the
two-dimensional (2D) square lattice half-filled Hubbard model, the ground state
energy, local moment, sublattice magnetization, uniform magnetic susceptibility
and spin stiffness are calculated as a function of , where is the
Coulomb constant and is the hopping parameter. Magnetic susceptibility data
indicate a crossover around between spin density wave
antiferromagnetism and Heisenberg antiferromagnetism. Comparisons with Monte

A primordial origin for the atmospheric methane of Saturn's moon Titan
The origin of Titan's atmospheric methane is a key issue for understanding
the origin of the Saturnian satellite system. It has been proposed that
serpentinization reactions in Titan's interior could lead to the formation of
the observed methane. Meanwhile, alternative scenarios suggest that methane was
incorporated in Titan's planetesimals before its formation. Here, we point out
that serpentinization reactions in Titan's interior are not able to reproduce
the deuterium over hydrogen (D/H) ratio observed at present in methane in its
atmosphere, and would require a maximum D/H ratio in Titan's water ice 30%
lower than the value likely acquired by the satellite during its formation,
based on Cassini observations at Enceladus. Alternatively, production of
methane in Titan's interior via radiolytic reactions with water can be
envisaged but the associated production rates remain uncertain. On the other
hand, a mechanism that easily explains the presence of large amounts of methane
trapped in Titan in a way consistent with its measured atmospheric D/H ratio is
its direct capture in the satellite's planetesimals at the time of their
formation in the solar nebula. In this case, the mass of methane trapped in
Titan's interior can be up to 1,300 times the current mass of atmospheric
