Polymorphism in Noctua pronuba (Lepidoptera, Noctuidae) in southern Norway

Forty-five light trap samples of Noctua pronuba (Linnaeus, 1758), consisting of nearly 11 000 individuals, from 38 localities in western and southeastern Norway, were scored for three morphs, rufous, ochre and silver, according to the forewing colouration. Rufous constituted 37% to 62% of the samples from westem Norway, and 50% to 73% of the samples from southeastern Norway. Males constituted 93% of the specimens. In 12 samples, with a sufficient number of females (n>25), no sex difference in the frequency of rufous was established. The seasonal variation in the frequency of rufous was considered negligible and no annual variation was apparent. No geographic variation in the frequency of rufous was demonstrated in western Norway. In southeastern Norway one sample differed significantly from all the others. When samples from adjacent localities were lumped, significant differences in the frequency of rufous were found between three regions in western Norway, and between southeastern Norway and all the regions in western Norway. In southeastern Norway, regression analyses showed a significant increase in the frequency of rufous towards the east

Limnophyes guarani sp. n., a new hygropetric Orthocladiiane from southern Brazil (Diptera: Chironomidae)

A new species of Limnophyes Eaton collected in the Corvo Branco Mountains in Santa Catarina State is described and figured, based on male and female adults, larva and pupa. The species groups with L. griseata (Edwards) and L. bidumus Sæther as the adults have a pronounced humeral pit with lanceolate setae and an additional group of lanceolate setae just posterior to antepronotum. The adults are, however, distinctly smaller, have a lower AR and have more lanceolate setae in the group just posterior to antepronotum than the two other species. The pupa can easily be separated from the pupa of L. bidumus as the anal macroseta is longer than the anal lobe. The larva lives hygropetric on vertical rock surfaces. A key to male adults of Neotropical Limnophyes is given.publishedVersio

The genus Palaeoboreochlus Baranov et Andersen, n. gen. is erected based on P. inornatus Baranov et Andersen, n. sp. described from a male found in Late Eocene Rovno amber. The new genus groups with Boreochlus Edwards in the tribe "Boreochlini".publishedVersio

Molleriella kaputu n. sp. from the West Usambara Mountains, NE Tanzania (Diptera: Chironomidae)

The male and female imago of Molleriella kaputu n. sp. are described and figured based on specimens collected in NE Tanzania in 1990. The new species can be separated from M. calcarella Sæther and Ekrem by having a slightly narrower, parallel sided anal point and weaker setae on the inferior volsella, longer C extension and distinctly shorter tibiae. The specimens were caught in Malaise traps at about 1500 m altitude in the Mazumbai Forest Reserve in the West Usambara Mountains. Article submitted 17. June 2014, accepted 29. Enhanced photoenergy harvesting and extreme Thomson effect in hydrodynamic electronic systems

The thermoelectric (TE) properties of a material are dramatically altered when electron-electron interactions become the dominant scattering mechanism. In the degenerate hydrodynamic regime, the thermal conductivity is reduced and becomes a {\it decreasing} function of the electronic temperature, due to a violation of the Wiedemann-Franz (WF) law. We here show how this peculiar temperature dependence gives rise to new striking TE phenomena. These include an 80-fold increase in TE efficiency compared to the WF regime, dramatic qualitative changes in the steady state temperature profile, and an anomalously large Thomson effect. In graphene, which we pay special attention to here, these effects are further amplified due to a doubling of the thermopower.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figure

West African Triaenodes McLachlan (Trichoptera: Leptoceridae). 2. Subgenus Triaenodes sensu stricto.

    Get PDF
Seven new Triaenodes McLachlan species belonging to subgenus Triaenodes sensu stricto, T. akua sp. n., T. kofi sp. n., T. kwabena sp. n., T. kwaku sp. n., T. kwame sp. n., T. kwasi sp. n., and T. yaw sp. n., are described and figured based on males collected in Ghana. Adult males of the seven previously described species recorded from West Africa, T. africanus Ulmer, T. darfuricus Mosely, T. elegantulus Ulmer, T. imakus Gibbs, T. scottae Gibon, T. tofanus Gibbs, and T. troubati Gibon are redescribed and figured. A key to the males of the West African species of Triaenodes sensu stricto is provided
