    Accuracy and repeatability of wrist joint angles in boxing using an electromagnetic tracking system

    © 2019, The Author(s). The hand-wrist region is reported as the most common injury site in boxing. Boxers are at risk due to the amount of wrist motions when impacting training equipment or their opponents, yet we know relatively little about these motions. This paper describes a new method for quantifying wrist motion in boxing using an electromagnetic tracking system. Surrogate testing procedure utilising a polyamide hand and forearm shape, and in vivo testing procedure utilising 29 elite boxers, were used to assess the accuracy and repeatability of the system. 2D kinematic analysis was used to calculate wrist angles using photogrammetry, whilst the data from the electromagnetic tracking system was processed with visual 3D software. The electromagnetic tracking system agreed with the video-based system (paired t tests) in both the surrogate ( 0.9). In the punch testing, for both repeated jab and hook shots, the electromagnetic tracking system showed good reliability (ICCs > 0.8) and substantial reliability (ICCs > 0.6) for flexion–extension and radial-ulnar deviation angles, respectively. The results indicate that wrist kinematics during punching activities can be measured using an electromagnetic tracking system

    Experimental analysis of gas-sensitive Braitenberg vehicles

    This article addresses the problem of localizing a static gas source in an indoor environment by a mobile robot. In contrast to previous works, the environment is not artificially ventilated to produce a strong unidirectional airflow. Here, the dominant transport mechanisms of gas molecules are turbulence and convection flow rather than diffusion, which results in a patchy, chaotically fluctuating gas distribution. Two Braitenberg-type strategies (positive and negative tropotaxis) based on the instantaneously measured spatial concentration gradient were investigated. Both strategies were shown to be of potential use for gas source localization. As a possible solution to the problem of gas source declaration (the task of determining with certainty that the gas source has been found), an indirect localization strategy based on exploration and concentration peak avoidance is suggested. Here, a gas source is located by exploiting the fact that local concentration maxima occur more frequently near the gas source compared to distant regions

    Famine food of vegetal origin consumed in the Netherlands during World War II

    Background: Periods of extreme food shortages during war force people to eat food that they normally do not consider edible. The last time that countries in Western Europe experienced severe scarcities was during World War II. The so-called Dutch famine or Hunger Winter (1944-1945) made at least 25,000 victims. The Dutch government took action by opening soup kitchens and providing information on wild plants and other famine food sources in "wartime cookbooks." The Dutch wartime diet has never been examined from an ethnobotanical perspective. Methods: We interviewed 78 elderly Dutch citizens to verify what they remembered of the consumption of vegetal and fungal famine food during World War II by them and their close surroundings. We asked whether they experienced any adverse effects from consuming famine food plants and how they knew they were edible. We identified plant species mentioned during interviews by their local Dutch names and illustrated field guides and floras. We hypothesized that people living in rural areas consumed more wild species than urban people. A Welch t test was performed to verify whether the number of wild and cultivated species differed between urban and rural citizens. Results: A total number of 38 emergency food species (14 cultivated and 21 wild plants, three wild fungi) were mentioned during interviews. Sugar beets, tulip bulbs, and potato peels were most frequently consumed. Regularly eaten wild species were common nettle, blackberry, and beechnuts. Almost one third of our interviewees explicitly described to have experienced extreme hunger during the war. People from rural areas listed significantly more wild species than urban people. The number of cultivated species consumed by both groups was similar. Negative effects were limited to sore throats and stomachache from the consumption of sugar beets and tulip bulbs. Knowledge on the edibility of famine food was obtained largely by oral transmission; few people remembered the written recipes in wartime cookbooks. Conclusion: This research shows that 71years after the Second World War, knowledge on famine food species, once crucial for people's survival, is still present in the Dutch society. The information on famine food sources supplied by several institutions was not distributed widely. For the necessary revival of famine food knowledge during the 1940s, people needed to consult a small group of elders. Presumed toxicity was a major reason given by our participants to explain why they did not collect wild plants or mushrooms during the war

    RSPO3 impairs barrier function of human vascular endothelial monolayers and synergizes with pro-inflammatory IL-1

    Abstract Background Endothelial barrier dysfunction characterized by hyperpermeability of the vascular endothelium is a key factor in the pathogenesis of chronic inflammatory diseases and affects clinical outcomes. In states of chronic inflammation, mediators secreted by activated immune cells or vascular endothelium may affect the barrier function and permeability of the vascular endothelium. The matricellular R-spondin family member RSPO3 is produced by inflammatory-activated human monocytes and vascular endothelial cells, but its effects in the regulation of vascular endothelial barrier function remains elusive. Methods The present study investigates the effects of RSPO3 on the barrier function of adult human primary macro- and micro- vascular endothelial monolayers. Tight monolayers of primary endothelial cells from human coronary and pulmonary arteries, and cardiac, brain, and dermal microvascular beds were treated with RSPO3 either alone or in combination with pro-inflammatory mediator IL-1β. Endothelial barrier function was assessed non-invasively in real-time using Electric Cell-substrate Impedance Sensing. Results RSPO3 treatment critically affected barrier function by enhancing the permeability of all vascular endothelial monolayers investigated. To confer hyperpermeable phenotype in vascular endothelial monolayers, RSPO3 induced inter-endothelial gap formation by disrupting the β-catenin and VE-cadherin alignment at adherens junctions. RSPO3 synergistically enhanced the barrier impairing properties of the pro-inflammatory mediator IL-1β. Conclusion Here, we show that the matricellular protein RSPO3 is a mediator of endothelial hyperpermeability that can act in synergy with the inflammatory mediator IL-1β. This finding stimulates further studies to delineate the endothelial barrier impairing properties of RSPO3 and its synergistic interaction with IL-1β in chronic inflammatory diseases
