The SDGs as a useful tool in vernacular architecture management: The case of “17 objectives and a map”

[EN] The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) contribute to unite cities, organizations, local governments, and people networks, sharing transformation policies and challenges for the future of the planet. At present, cultural heritage is widely recognised as a fundamental pillar in the achievement of the SDGs in the coming years. Focused on people and their work to place culture, education, heritage, art and social development as a focal point, a project has been developed by the hand of the Jaume I University (Castellón). "17 objectives and a map” is a project based on the 17 SDGs, wich emphasizes the importance of traditional crafts, construction techniques and the heritage conservation to achieve the global goals. The history of construction shows that vernacular architecture have always been creative in adapting and optimizing buildings using the local resources available to fulfill people’s needs in the best way. In this process -in a natural and sustainable way- climatic, economic, social and cultural factors have been taken into account. During the first phase of the proyect (years 2020 and 2021) workshops where heritage communities exchanged experiences and good practices improving mutual learning, were developed in a playful and fluid way, identifying and extracting SDG messages from different projects. With the help of specific designed toolkits, heritage communities became aware of the importance of sustainable actions to transform the heritage future. After several months of workshop, the results of this first phase served the participants to review their projects from an SDG perspective and to restructure some points of them in favor of a more sustainable future. Also, the results constituted an excellent starting point to work, in a pioneering way, in the field of the SDGs from a heritage perspective.López Sabater, A.; García López De Andújar, V.; Laumain, X. State-of-the-art approaches on hand pose estimation from depth images have reported promising results under quite controlled considerations. In this paper we propose a two-step pipeline for recovering the hand pose from a sequence of depth images. The pipeline has been designed to deal with images taken from any viewpoint and exhibiting a high degree of finger occlusion. In a first step we initialize the hand pose using a part-based model, fitting a set of hand components in the depth images. In a second step we consider temporal data and estimate the parameters of a trained bilinear model consisting of shape and trajectory bases. We evaluate our approach on a new created synthetic hand dataset along with NYU and MSRA real datasets. Results demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms the most recent pose recovering approaches, including those based on CNNs.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

Automated digital color restitution of mural paintings using minimal art historian input

    Get PDF
Digital color restitution aims to digitally restore the original colors of a painting. Existing image editing applications can be used for this purpose, but they require a select-and-edit workflow and thus they do not scale well to large collections of paintings or different regions of the same painting. To address this issue, we propose an automated workflow that requires only a few representative source colors and associated target colors as input from art historians. The system then creates a control grid to model a deformation of the CIELAB color space. Such deformation can be applied to arbitrary images of the same painting. The proposed approach is suitable for restituting the color of images from a large photographic campaign, as well as for the textures of 3D reconstructions of a monument. We demonstrate the benefits of our method on a collection of mural paintings from a medieval monument. This work has been partially supported by projects PID2021-122136OB-C21 and PID2021-122136OB-C22 funded by MCIN/AEI/ 10.13039/501100011033 and by ERDF A way of making Europe, by the EU Horizon 2020, JPICH Conservation, Protection and Use initiative (JPICH-0127) and the Spanish Agencia Estatal de Investigación (grant PCI2020-111979).Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

From the past few years, it also became an attractive research area in visual computing. From the computational point of view, by far speech and text have been the most considered cues of information for analyzing personality. However, recently there has been an increasing interest from the computer vision community in analyzing personality from visual data. Recent computer vision approaches are able to accurately analyze human faces, body postures and behaviors, and use these information to infer apparent personality traits. Because of the overwhelming research interest in this topic, and of the potential impact that this sort of methods could have in society, we present in this paper an up-to-date review of existing vision-based approaches for apparent personality trait recognition. We describe seminal and cutting edge works on the subject, discussing and comparing their distinctive features and limitations. Future venues of research in the field are identified and discussed. Furthermore, aspects on the subjectivity in data labeling/evaluation, as well as current datasets and challenges organized to push the research on the field are reviewed.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

García López De Andújar, V.; López Sabater, A.; Laumain, X. Methodology for energy management strategies design based on predictive control techniques for smart grids

This article focuses on the development of a general energy management system (EMS) design methodology using on model-based predictive control (MPC) for the control and management of microgrids. Different MPCbased EMS for microgrids have been defined in the literature; however, there is a lack of generality in the proposed that would facilitate adapting to new architectures, energy storage system technology, nature of the bus, application, or purpose. To fill this gap, a novel general formulation that is parameterizable, simple, easily interpretable, and reproducible in different microgrid architectures is presented. This is the result of the development of a novel methodology, which is also presented. It considers the state space formulation of the controller from the initial modelling phase, from the dynamics of the energy storage systems represented by their models to the subsequent definition of the optimisation problem. This is developed through the design of the general cost function and the formulation of constrains, by means of general guidelines and reference values. To evaluate the performance of the developed methodology, simulation tests were carried out for four different microgrid architectures, with different applications and objectives, also considering different generation conditions, demand profiles, and initial conditions. The results showed that, with some simple guidelines and regardless of the case study, the developed MPC controller design methodology can address the technicaleconomic optimisation problem associated with energy management in microgrids in an easy and intuitive way. This work was supported in part by grant PID2020-116616RB-C31 and grant PID2021-124908NB-I00 founded by MCIN/AEI/10.13039/ 501100011033 and by “ERDF A way of making Europe”; by the Generalitat Valenciana regional government through project CIAICO/2021/ 064, by Andalusian Regional Program of R + D + i (P20- 00730), and by the project “The green hydrogen vector. Digital reintegration of distributed mural paintings at different architectural phases: the case of St. Quirze de Pedret

    Get PDF
Sant Quirze de Pedret is a Romanesque church located in Cercs (Catalonia, Spain) at the foothills of the Pyrenees. Its walls harbored one of the most important examples of mural paintings in Catalan Romanesque Art. However, in two different campaigns (in 1921 and 1937) the paintings were removed using the strappo technique and transferred to museums for safekeeping. This detachment protected the paintings from being sold in the art market, but at the price of breaking the integrity of the monument. Nowadays, the paintings are exhibited in the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya - MNAC (Barcelona, Catalonia) and the Museu Diocesà i Comarcal de Solsona - MDCS (Solsona, Catalonia). Some fragments of the paintings are still on the walls of the church. In this work, we present the methodology to digitally reconstruct the church building at its different phases and group the dispersed paintings in a single virtual church, commissioned by the MDCS. We have combined 3D reconstruction (LIDAR and photogrammetric using portable artificial illumination) and modeling techniques (including texture transfer between different shapes) to recover the integrity of the monument in a single 3D virtual model. Furthermore, we have reconstructed the church building at different significant historical moments and placed actual paintings on its virtual walls, based on archaeological knowledge. This set of 3D models allows experts and visitors to better understand the monument as a whole, the relations between the different paintings, and its evolution over time. The project has been promoted by the Museu Diocesà i Comarcal de Solsona (special thanks are due to Carles Freixes and Lídia Fàbregas), co-financed by "La Caixa" Foundation and the Department of Culture of the Generalitat de Catalunya. [Abstract] We report giant reversible barocaloric effects in [(CH₃)₄N]Mn[N₃]₃ hybrid organic–inorganic perovskite, near its first-order cubic-monoclinic structural phase transition at ₀ ∼ 305 K. When driving the transition thermally at atmospheric pressure, the transition displays a large change in entropy of ∼80 J K⁻¹ kg⁻¹ and a small thermal hysteresis of ∼7 K, as well as a large change in volume of ∼1.5%. When driving the transition with pressure near room temperature, the transition displays large changes in entropy of ∼70 J K⁻¹ kg⁻¹, which represent a giant barocaloric response. Hybrid perovskites with similar barocaloric response and lower operating temperatures may find applications in environmentally friendly cooling. The authors are grateful for financial support from Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad MINECO and EU-FEDER (MAT2017-86453-R), Xunta de Galicia (ED431G/09), FAMEPA (COOPI-07771/17), and ERC Starting Grant no. 680032Xunta de Galicia; ED431G/0

HA del castillo!! Historia y Acción social en torno a la las fortalezas españolas

[EN] The historic neighborhoods located on the slopes of the defensive buildings of the cities have often been excluded from urban and social advances (unhealthy housing, few public services, nonexistent facilities, low incomes) undergoing a process of emptying and social degradation. On the other hand, castles that top the majority of Spanish populations continue to be the main focus of tourist attraction, thus creating a physical and social barrier between the two spaces, historically related. Focused on children and with the intention of making public in a playful way their immediate environment, and the unprotected or lacked of interest areas, we have developed a cultural and pedagogical program developed around cultural assets within from a place at risk of social exclusion, making it belong to them and inviting the rest of society to be interested in that historically rich neighbourhood of life.[ES] Los barrios históricos situados en las faldas de las construcciones defensivas de las ciudades se han quedado, a menudo, excluidas de los avances urbanísticos y sociales (viviendas insalubres, escasos servicios públicos, inexistentes equipamientos, rentas bajas) sufriendo un proceso de vaciado y degradación social.
