A Virtual Element Method for a Nonlocal FitzHugh-Nagumo Model of Cardiac Electrophysiology
We present a Virtual Element Method (VEM) for a nonlocal reaction-diffusion
system of the cardiac electric field. To this system, we analyze an
-conforming discretization by means of VEM which can make use of
general polygonal meshes. Under standard assumptions on the computational
domain, we establish the convergence of the discrete solution by considering a
series of a priori estimates and by using a general compactness
criterion. Moreover, we obtain optimal order space-time error estimates in the
norm. Finally, we report some numerical tests supporting the theoretical
results
Incorporating variable viscosity in vorticity-based formulations for Brinkman equations
In this brief note, we introduce a non-symmetric mixed finite element
formulation for Brinkman equations written in terms of velocity, vorticity and
pressure with non-constant viscosity. The analysis is performed by the
classical Babu\v{s}ka-Brezzi theory, and we state that any inf-sup stable
finite element pair for Stokes approximating velocity and pressure can be
coupled with a generic discrete space of arbitrary order for the vorticity. We
establish optimal a priori error estimates which are further confirmed through
computational example
Tesi
Porphyrinoid biohybrid materials as an emerging toolbox for biomedical light management
The development of photoactive and biocompatible nanomaterials is a current major challenge of materials science and nanotechnology, as they will contribute to promoting current and future biomedical applications. A growing strategy in this direction consists of using biologically inspired hybrid materials to maintain or even enhance the optical properties of chromophores and fluorophores in biological media. Within this area, porphyrinoids constitute the most important family of organic photosensitizers. The following extensive review will cover their incorporation into different kinds of photosensitizing biohybrid materials, as a fundamental research effort toward the management of light for biomedical use, including technologies such as photochemical internalization (PCI), photoimmunotherapy (PIT), and theranostic combinations of fluorescence imaging and photodynamic therapy (PDT) or photodynamic inactivation (PDI) of microorganismsThe work carried out to write this review article has received funding from the People Program (Marie Curie Actions) of the European Union’s Seventh Framework Program FP7-PEOPLE-2012-ITN under REA grant agreement no. Rotation-Based Mixed Formulations for an Elasticity-Poroelasticity Interface Problem
In this paper we introduce a new formulation for the stationary poroelasticity equations written using the rotation vector and the total fluid-solid pressure as additional unknowns, and we also write an extension to the elasticity-poroelasticity problem. The transmission conditions are imposed naturally in the weak formulation, and the analysis of the effective governing equations is conducted by an application of Fredholm's alternative. We also propose a monolithically coupled mixed finite element method for the numerical solution of the problem. Its convergence properties are rigorously derived and subsequently confirmed by a set of computational tests that include applications to subsurface flow in reservoirs as well as to dentistry-oriented problems.Fondo Nacional de Desarrollo Científico y Tecnológico/[11160706]/FONDECYT/ChilePrograma Concurso Apoyo a Centros Científicos y Tecnológicos de Excelencia/[AFB170001]/PIA/ChileUCR::Sedes Regionales::Sede de OccidenteUCR::Vicerrectoría de Docencia::Ciencias Básicas::Facultad de Ciencias::Escuela de Matemátic
Reátegui, L., Grompone, A., & Rentería, M. (2022).
Potential soil erosion risk in the high basin of Hozgarganta river is analyzed in this paper. We have used the methodology proposed by PAP/RAC (1997), as modified Jordán and Martínez-Zavala (Jordán, 2000; Martínez-Zavala, 2001; MartínezZavala et al., 2002). Using this method, the study area has been divided in terrain units with different level of susceptibility to rainfall-induced erosion risk (erosive status).
An assesment of actual and potential erosion risk is carried out, suposing three posible situations, acording to different percentages of canopy.
As a conclusion, the actual soil erosion risk is low for the Hozgarganta Basin. However, the equilibrium of the system is unstable, so that little changes in the vegetation cover may originate great changes in the intensity of the erosive processe
Manganese Inhalation as a Parkinson Disease Model
The present study examines the effects of divalent and trivalent Manganese (Mn2+/Mn3+) mixture inhalation on mice to obtain a novel animal model of Parkinson disease (PD) inducing bilateral and progressive dopaminergic cell death, correlate those alterations with motor disturbances, and determine whether L-DOPA treatment improves the behavior, to ensure that the alterations are of dopaminergic origin. CD-1 male mice inhaled a mixture of Manganese chloride and Manganese acetate, one hour twice a week for five months. Before Mn exposure, animals were trained to perform motor function tests and were evaluated each week after the exposure. By the end of Mn exposure, 10 mice were orally treated with 7.5 mg/kg L-DOPA. After 5 months of Mn mixture inhalation, striatal dopamine content decreased 71%, the SNc showed important reduction in the number of TH-immunopositive neurons, mice developed akinesia, postural instability, and action tremor; these motor alterations were reverted with L-DOPA treatment. Our data provide evidence that Mn2+/Mn3+ mixture inhalation produces similar morphological, neurochemical, and behavioral alterations to those observed in PD providing a useful experimental model for the study of this neurodegenerative disease
