Conducting a virtual ensemble with a kinect device

    Get PDF
This paper presents a gesture-based interaction technique for the implementation of an orchestra conductor and a virtual ensemble, using a 3D camera-based sensor to capture user’s gestures. In particular, a human-computer interface has been developed to recognize conducting gestures using a Microsoft Kinect device. The system allows the conductor to control both the tempo in the piece played as well as the dynamics of each instrument set independently. In order to modify the tempo in the playback, a time-frequency processing-based algorithmis used. Finally, an experiment was conducted to assess user’s opinion of the system as well as experimentally confirm if the features in the system were effectively improving user experience or not. This work has been funded by the Ministerio de Economia y Competitividad of the Spanish Government under Project No. TIN2010-21089-C03-02 and Project No. IPT-2011-0885-430000 and by the Junta de Andalucia under Project No. P11-TIC-7154. Autism and Faux Pas. Influences of Presentation Modality and Working Memory

    Get PDF
People diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) often have difficulties on Theory of Mind (ToM) tasks involving social situations, such as ‘faux pas’. The objective of this study was to find the modality of presentation (visual, verbal, or mixed) that yields the best understanding of a ‘faux pas’, and the possible influence of other variables, including intelligence (IQ), age, and working memory. Thirty autistic children and 30 neurotypical children, all aged 7 to 12 years old and comparable in age and IQ, participated in this study. They were asked to resolve nine ‘faux pas’ stories (three per modality). Significant between-groups differences were found in the visual (t = 2.99, p = .004) and verbal modalities (t = 2.64, p = .011), such that the neurotypical (NT) group had higher scores than the ASD group. The ASD group’s comprehension was better via the mixed modality than the verbal modality (t = 2.48, p = .019). In addition, working memory had a bigger impact on Faux Pas understanding in cases of autism than in typical development (R2 explained between .19 and .28 of variance in Faux Pas test outcomes), and could therefore explain some of the difficulties previously reported in this area. Future research should include a measure of working memory and a control among the stimuli presented to test for group differences in faux pas understanding

Filling the Gaps to Solve the Extensin Puzzle

    Get PDF
Extensins (EXTs) are highly repetitive plant O-glycoproteins that require several post-translational modifications (PTMs) to become functional in plant cell walls. First, they are hydroxylated on contiguous proline residues; then they are O-glycosylated on hydroxyproline and serine. After secretion into the apoplast, O-glycosylated EXTs form a tridimensional network organized by inter- and intra-Tyr linkages. Recent studies have made significant progress in the identification of the enzymatic machinery required to process EXTs, which includes prolyl 4-hydroxylases, glycosyltransferases, papain-type cysteine endopeptidases, and peroxidases. EXTs are abundant in plant tissues and are particularly important in rapidly expanding root hairs and pollen tubes, which grow in a polar manner. Small changes in EXT PTMs affect fast-growing cells, although the molecular mechanisms underlying this regulation are unknown. In this review, we highlight recent advances in our understanding of EXT modifications throughout the secretory pathway, EXT assembly in cell walls, and possible sensing mechanisms involving the Catharanthus roseus cell surface sensor receptor-like kinases located at the interface between the apoplast and the cytoplasmic side of the plasma membrane. This review describes recent progress in our understanding of extensin post-translational modifications throughout the secretory pathway, extensin secretion and assembly in the cell walls, and possible sensing mechanisms at the interface between the apoplast and the cytoplasmic side of the cell surface.Fil: Marzol, Eliana.

The study presented below shows the impact in the family based on the responses of 10 families with children presenting Asperger’s Disorder, members of the Asperger’s Association of Castellon. This study used a questionnaire adapted from Donenberg and Baker, containing qualitative responses. The results suggest that the greatest impact is produced on the family economy, closely followed by emotional and attitude issues, and lastly, on the social life. In addition, has been performed a non-parametric analysis, using the Mann-Whitney U, including other variables such as: age, marital status and level of involvement of the Asperger. It is remarkable that the severity of Asperger (those in the most affected group within the autistic spectrum) has a significant trend with the feelings and attitudes of the parents studied. Finally, regarding the qualitative responses, the most common answers are related to situations that caused stress and happiness

Investigating moral judgements in autistic children: integrating the observer’s and the speaker’s mind

    Get PDF
This study investigates the moral judgements that autistic children make in everyday situations. Moral Transgressions (MT) and Faux Pas (FP) stories were compared, in which stories the agent’s morality and intention varied (MT: bad, FP: good), and were divided by the mediator (personal / material). Thirty autistic and 32 neurotypical children answered forced-choice questions. The two groups did not differ significantly when responding to either the MT or the FP questions. In between-group comparisons, the autistic group found difficulties in understanding the MT stories when the action directly affected another person (personal mediator). Comparisons between agent’s morality and intention variables revealed that autistic children judged the morality of the agent in FP stories as severe as in the MT task, even when the agent’s intention was understood. These subtle problems could shed some light on how autistic individuals would judge social situations, from the lack of a robust ToM to difficulties being socially flexible

Detailing the understanding of moral judgements in autism. A study with Spanish-speaking children

    Get PDF
This study compared the theory of mind features of moral judgements in 60 children with and without Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), using a novel verbal moral judgement task. The task focused on three different scenarios which were morally unacceptable. Five measures were assessed with forced-choice responses, whilst the other two were categorised according to the quality of the response (categories: (i) related to mental states; (ii) descriptions; (iii) literal reiterations; (iv) inappropriate). No significant differences regarding the forced-choice answers were found between the groups. Justifications were classified mostly in category (ii) description by the ASD group, whereas the justifications of children with typical development referred to the use of mental-state words and descriptions for explanations. Implications of ToM in moral reasoning for children with ASD are discussed
