    NASA’s System Behind the System: Developing Systems Engineers

    The purpose of this paper is to share NASA’s model for developing high-potential, mid-level systems engineers and the results achieved. It describes the complex system approach to technical leadership development and factors that contributed to the program’s success. Findings show that identifying, training, and developing the entire learning system—not just program participants—significantly affected the participants’ ability to make a greater contribution to the organization. NASA achieved an 80% first year, and 90% second year, success rate of individuals transitioning into more complex and difficult positions upon returning to their organizations. Comparatively, the average failure rate for executive transition is 40%. NASA’s findings are applicable to other organizations. Developing potential leaders by involving the entire system in which the individual works, while holding their leadership accountable, produces qualified leaders ready to meet the organization’s ongoing challenges

    El resumen aparece en el Program & Abstracts of the 10th International Congress of Vertebrate Morphology, Barcelona 2013.Anatomical Record, Volume 296, Special Feature — 1: P-077.In chondrichthyans and actinopterygians, the outflow tract of the heart, namely, the cardiac portion intercalated between the ventricle and the ventral aorta, consists of two anatomical components: conus arteriosus and bulbus arteriosus. In chondrichthyans and extant representatives of phylogenetically ancient actinopterygian groups, the conus and bulbus are well-developed in size, whereas in most teleosts, the bulbus is markedly larger than the conus. Current knowledge about the cardiac outflow tract of the polypteriformes is scarce and highly contradictory, a fact that contrasts with their crucial phylogenetic position at the source of the actinopterygian lineage. In fact, it remains uncertain whether they have a bulbus at the arterial pole of the heart. The present study aimed to elucidate the anatomical arrangement of the cardiac outflow tract of the bichir in an attempt to improve our understanding of the evolution of the vertebrate heart. We examined the hearts from 12 bichirs using histochemical and immunohistochemical techniques. Our findings showed that the outflow tract of the bichir consists of two components, namely, a long conus arteriosus, largely composed of myocardial tissue and furnished with a variable number of valves at its luminal side, and a very short, elastin rich bulbus arteriosus, devoid of myocardium. The bulbus has an arterial-like histological composition. However, it differs from the aorta because it has a thicker wall, shows a different arrangement of the histological elements, is covered by the epicardium and is crossed by coronary arteries. The present observations are consistent with the notion that the conus arteriosus and the bulbus arteriosus have coexisted from the beginning of the jawed vertebrate radiation. This is of particular interest, because there is evidence that the bulbus arteriosus, which is a second heart field derivative, is homologous with the intrapericardial portions of the aorta and pulmonary artery of birds and mammals.Proyecto CGL2010-16417/BOS; Fondos FEDER

    Cassava mealybugs constitute one of the major production problems of cassava in Africa and the Americas. The species already identified that attack cassava in the Americas include Phenacoccus manihoti, P. herreni, P. gossypii, and P. grenadensis. Since its introduction into Africa, P. manihoti has caused considerable yield losses in some regions, especially Zaire. In the Americas, severe outbreaks of P. herreni have been reported in several areas of Brazil, Colombia, and the Guianas. These 2 species are similar taxonomically and in plant damage symptoms but differ biologically. The initial and most severe attack of both species occurs on the growing point of the cassava plant shoots. Plant reaction consists of a rosetting effect on the apical leaves which results in a cabbage-like appearance of the shoot. High mealybug populations, together with the stress caused by drought, cause defoliation, deformation of the shoots, shortening of internodes, and distortion of stems. The bionomics of both species differ in that P. herreni is bisexual and P. manihoti reproduces parthenogenetically. Biological studies on P. herreni show that the female passesthrough 3 instars before the adult stage. The complete life cycle from egg to adult lasts 49.5 days. Males pass through 4 instars before the adult stage, in which the adult male is winged. The whole cycle lasts 29.5 days. The cassava mealybug has numerous natural enemies. Biological control combined with resistance offers a healthy and economical control of the pest. Tables are included on the life cycle of P. herreni and P. gossypii on plants of cassava var. M Col 113 under lab. conditions, size and size increase of P. herreni on cassava under greenhouse conditions, hyperparasites of Phenacoccus spp. in Latin America, populations of natural enemies of the cassava mealybug in the field, and natural enemies of P. gossypii and P. herreni in Latin America and the Caribbean.     Bismuth incorporation and the role of ordering in GaAsBi/GaAs structures

    The structure and composition of single GaAsBi/GaAs epilayers grown by molecular beam epitaxy were investigated by optical and transmission electron microscopy techniques. Firstly, the GaAsBi layers exhibit two distinct regions and a varying Bi composition profile in the growth direction. In the lower (25 nm) region, the Bi content decays exponentially from an initial maximum value, while the upper region comprises an almost constant Bi content until the end of the layer. Secondly, despite the relatively low Bi content, CuPtB-type ordering was observed both in electron diffraction patterns and in fast Fourier transform reconstructions from high-resolution transmission electron microscopy images. The estimation of the long-range ordering parameter and the development of ordering maps by using geometrical phase algorithms indicate a direct connection between the solubility of Bi and the amount of ordering. The occurrence of both phase separation and atomic ordering has a significant effect on the optical properties of these layers

    Completeness of evanescent modes in layered dielectrics

    In the presence of a dielectric slab, the modes of the free electromagnetic field comprise traveling modes, consisting of incoming, reflected, and transmitted parts, as well as trapped modes that are subject to repeated total internal reflection and emerge as evanescent field outside the slab. Traveling modes have a continuous range of frequencies, but trapped modes occur only at certain discrete frequencies. We solve the problem of which relative weight to use when summing over all modes, as commonly required in perturbative calculations. We demonstrate the correctness of our method by showing the completeness of electromagnetic field modes in the presence of a dielectric slab. We derive a convenient method of summing over all modes by means of a single contour integral, which is very useful in standard quantum electrodynamic calculations

    Colorimetric detection of normetanephrine, a pheochromocytoma biomarker, using bifunctionalised gold nanoparticles

    [EN] A simple and effective colorimetric method for the detection of normetanephrine (NMN), an O-methylated metabolite of norepinephrine, using functionalised gold nanoparticles is described. This metabolite is an important biomarker in the diagnosis of adrenal tumours such as pheocromocytoma or paraganglioma. The colorimetric probe consists of spherical gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) functionalised with two different ligands, which specifically recognize different functional groups in normetanephrine. Thus, a benzaldehyde-terminated ligand was used for the recognition of the amino alcohol moiety in NMN, by forming the corresponding oxazolidine. On the other hand, N-acetyl-cysteine was chosen for the recognition of the phenolic hydroxyl group through the formation of hydrogen bonds. The selective double molecular recognition between the probe and the hydroxyl and the amino-alcohol moieties of normetanephrine led to interparticle-crosslinking aggregation resulting in a change in the color of the solution, from red to blue, which could be observed by naked eye. The probe was highly selective towards normetanephrine and no color changes were observed in the presence of other neurotransmitter metabolites such as homovanillic acid (HVA) (dopamine metabolite), 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA) (serotonin metabolite), or other biomolecules present in urine such as glucose (Glc), uric acid (U.A), and urea.
