    The Importance of Logistics Distribution Centers as Nodes in Logistics Networks

    The emergence of logistics distribution centers has in the past few decades become a mass phenomenon that has emerged as a result of global economic processes. As part of logistics networks, logistics distribution centers are the key link between production and the market, i.e. end users, and function as nodes that facilitate international business activities. For this reason, the aim of this paper is to analyze the characteristics of logistics distribution centers on the example of logistics distribution centers of the selected Western and Central European Union countries and examine the prospects for the development of logistics distribution centers in Croatia. The research results indicate that the Republic of Croatia is less competitive in comparison with Western and Central European countries, although it has a number of logistics distribution centers due to insufficient utilization and renewal of transport infrastructure. Logistics distribution centers are an important center of logistics networks, and the countries will have to devote more attention to their development to attract foreign investment and achieve economic development, because their significance will continue to grow in the future

    The paper critically discusses the theoretical foundations and key values of pacifism in the philosophical and socio-legal discourse of Ksenija Atanasijević and Đorđe Tasić. Furthermore, in the context of political events in Europe and the world in the 1930s, the interest in pacifist ideas and non-violent forms of resistance to extreme forms of violence among the Serbian intellectual elite is analyzed, pointing out the fate of pacifism and advocation of pacifist ideas, as well as the significance of these ideas for our contemporary political culture. In the second part of the paper, from a broader perspective of our time in a context dominated by various forms of extreme violence resulting from wars, migration, epidemics and the struggle for political, economic and military dominance, the authors intend to indicate the relevance and key values of the idea of pacifism and the practical pacifist engagement of Ksenija Atanasijević and Đorđe Tasić

    The effect of thermal processing on the reduction of deoxynivalenol and zearalenone cereal content

    Fusarium mycotoxins deoxynivalenol (DON) and zearalenone (ZEN) often contaminate cereals and cereal by-products. Certain thermal processing methods used in the food industry show promising results in terms of reduction of cereal contamination with mycotoxins. In order to establish the degree of DON and ZEN reduction in naturally contaminated cereals (maize, wheat and oat), this study investigated the effects of cooking, roasting and extrusion cooking, performed at different temperatures (100 ā€“ 220 Ā°C) and for a different length of time (10 ā€“ 30 min) on these mycotoxins concentrations. Before and after the treatment, cereal samples were analysed for DON and ZEN concentrations using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). In comparison to cooking, which achieved only a negligible mean mycotoxin reduction (of up to 8% for DON and 11% for ZEN), roasting and extrusion cooking resulted in a significantly more pronounced mycotoxin reduction (of up to 40% for DON & 46% for ZEN and of up to 75% for DON & 80% for ZEN, respectively) (p 0.05), suggesting that extrusion cooking can be considered as an effective thermal method capable of reducing mycotoxin content in cereals

    Anthelmintic Activity In Vivo of Epiisopiloturine against Juvenile and Adult Worms of Schistosoma mansoni

    Schistosomiasis is a serious disease currently estimated to affect more that 207 million people worldwide. Due to the intensive use of praziquantel, there is increasing concern about the development of drug-resistant strains. Therefore, it is necessary to search for and investigate new potential schistosomicidal compounds. This work reports the in vivo effect of the alkaloid epiisopiloturine (EPI) against adults and juvenile worms of Schistosoma mansoni. EPI was first purified its thermal behavior and theoretical solubility parameters charaterised. In the experiment, mice were treated with EPI over the 21 days post-infection with the doses of 40 and 200 mg/kg, and 45 days post-infection with single doses of 40, 100 and 300 mg/kg. The treatment with EPI at 40 mg/kg was more effective in adult worms when compared with doses of 100 and 300 mg/kg. The treatment with 40 mg/kg in adult worms reduced parasite burden significantly, lead to reduction in hepatosplenomegaly, reduced the egg burden in faeces, and decreased granuloma diameter. Scanning electron microscopy revealed morphological changes to the parasite tegument after treatment, including the loss of important features. Additionally, the in vivo treatment against juvenile with 40 mg/kg showed a reduction of the total worm burden of 50.2%. Histopathological studies were performed on liver, spleen, lung, kidney and brain and EPI was shown to have a DL50 of 8000 mg/kg. Therefore EPI shows potential to be used in schistosomiasis treatment. This is the first time that schistosomicidal in vivo activity of EPI has been reported

    Synthesis of nitrogen doped and nitrogen and sulfur co-doped carbon cryogels and their application for pharmaceuticals removal from water

    In this study carbon cryogel, cryogel doped with nitrogen, and both nitrogen and sulfur co-doped carbon cryogels (nominal concentration of nitrogen was in the range 2ā€“10Ā wt%) were synthesized and used as an adsorbent for the removal of carbamazepine, naproxen, diazepam and diclofenac from water. A batch adsorption kinetics study was performed by determination of contact time influence, the effect of pH, and adsorption isotherms. Structural and morphological analysis showed that there are no changes in turbostratic carbon structure induced by doping/co-doping, but noticeable morphology changes were observed. The presence of both nitrogen and nitrogen/sulfur were confirmed and results showed low content on the surface, especially for sulfur. Obtained high values of the specific surface area for co-doped samples (up to 1530Ā m2/g) can be caused by sulfur atoms burning or leaving the material during carbonization. The results of the adsorption kinetics study showed that the adsorption of all pharmaceuticals on all tested samples followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The maximum adsorption capacity obtained from the Langmuir isotherm model is higher for doped (91.28ā€“168.92Ā mg/g) and co-doped (152.97ā€“488.06Ā mg/g) samples than for pristine sample (59.75ā€“266.28Ā mg/g). Calculated adsorption energy values from the Dubinin-Radushkevich model indicate that the possible mechanism was physisorption. Desorption tests that were carried out showed satisfactory reusability for all samples. The favorable adsorption characteristics for the co-doped sample with a higher nominal concentration of nitrogen and sulfur qualifies as a potentially good adsorbent for the removal of pharmaceuticals from water
