The Common Disaster and the Unexpected Education: Delta Flight 1141 and the Discourse of Aviation Safety

    Get PDF
News coverage of transportation disasters, such as the crash of Delia Flight 1141, reveal the disaster behavior of passengers, flight personnel and rescue workers. Within a mystery framework, the Flight 1141 discourse provides clues that readers can use to construe ( their own disaster behavior awareness. The media must expand their pedagogical role beyond natural and technological disasters and begin providing basic airplane safety behavior information

The Birth Control Divide : U. S. Press Coverage of Contraception, 1873-2013

    Get PDF
For more than 140 years, religious, medical, legislative, and legal institutions have contested the issue of contraception. In this conversation, predominantly male voices have attached reproductive rights to tangential moral and political matters, revealing an ongoing, systematic attempt to regulate human bodies, especially those of women. This analysis of 1873-2013 press coverage of contraception in the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, and the Chicago Tribune shows a division between institutional ideology and real-life experience; women’s reproductive rights are negotiable. Although journalists often reported that contraception was a factor in the everyday life of women and men, press accounts also showed religious, medical, legislative, and legal institutions debating whether it should be. Contraception originally was predominately viewed as a practice of prostitutes (despite evidence to the contrary) but became a part of everyday life. The battle has slowly evolved into one about the Affordable Care Act, religious freedom, morality, and employer rights. What did not significantly change over the 140-year period are larger cultural and ideological structures; these continue to be dominated by men, who retain power over women’s bodies

Integration once again: The Brazilian Northeast in the context of EU-Mercosul trade relations

    Get PDF
Integration has meant great changes for Brazilian Northeast since its becoming part of the regional division of labour that allowed the constitution of a single domestic production system in the country in the 1950s. This process required the Northeastern economy to adjust to the extent of embarking into new industrial sectors and dismantling old industrial capacity, such as textiles. This adjustment has however developed the region's industrial capacity and competitiveness which allowed it to improve exports - both foreign and interregional - and reduce its so-called "structural" trade deficit in the 1980s. This context has changed by the constitution of the South American Common Market - the Mercosul. The new trade block has inspired northeastern polititians and diverse analysts to argue that the regional economy is to become less important for Brazilian domestic market and production system, as the interindustrial links are to enhance among southern and southeastern firms. Government expenditures as well as private investments concentrated in these regions gives them the explanation for their belief. The recent moves towards increasing the commercial links between the European Union and the Mercosul bring new facts to the context. The Northeast could emerge as holding competitive advantages out of this integration process into which the Brazilian economy is getting. There could be argued that the region's historical backwardness could decrease in the context of fusions, acquisitions and the like by European capital? Would not this be the case of moving backwards to the period in which there was no integrated domestic market and the Northeast, as other regions in Brazil, basically traded with European partners. These are the main questions this paper is to answer.

Towards the understanding of the behavior of bio-based nanostructures during in vitro digestion

    Get PDF
The encapsulation of bioactive compounds in bio-based nanostructures is considered a hot topic in food technology, due to their huge potential in protecting the valuable bioactive compounds and providing new functionalities (e.g. increase of bioavailability). However, there are still some challenges that must be overcome before this technology can be entirely embraced by food industry, including the optimisation of nanostructures formulations to increase stability and bioactive compounds bioavailability and the risk assessment of their use in food. Therefore, in recent years, efforts are being directed to the evaluation of the in vitro behaviour of nanostructures during digestion/absorption. This evaluation can be challenging, however, there are opportunities to take advantage from the lessons learned from pharmaceutical industry and of the considerable progress in the development of more realistic in vitro models and in situ analysis techniques to more accurately predict the behaviour of bio-based nanostructures once ingested.Ana C. Open subgroups of the automorphism group of a right-angled building

    Get PDF
We study the group of type-preserving automorphisms of a right-angled building, in particular when the building is locally finite. Our aim is to characterize the proper open subgroups as the finite index closed subgroups of the stabilizers of proper residues. One of the main tools is the new notion of firm elements in a right-angled Coxeter group, which are those elements for which the final letter in each reduced representation is the same. We also introduce the related notions of firmness for arbitrary elements of such a Coxeter group and nn-flexibility of chambers in a right-angled building. These notions and their properties are used to determine the set of chambers fixed by the fixator of a ball. Our main result is obtained by combining these facts with ideas by Pierre-Emmanuel Caprace and Timoth\'ee Marquis in the context of Kac-Moody groups over finite fields, where we had to replace the notion of root groups by a new notion of root wing groups.Comment: 29 page

The World War II Patriotic Mother

    Get PDF
The archetypal good mother and the archetypal patriotic mother are important symbols in American culture. Both are rooted in maternal work but are separated by two conflicting assumptions. The good mother nurtures her children and protects them from harm, while the patriotic wartime mother remains silent when the government sends her child directly into harm\u27s way. This study explores how the World War II press positioned mothers of soldiers to sacrifice their children in support of the nation\u27s war effort. The findings point to the importance of understanding the role of archetypes in news narratives

On the kernel of a singular integral operator with non-carleman shift and conjugation

On the Hilbert space (L) over tilde (2)(T) the singular integral operator with non-Carleman shift and conjugation K = P+ +(aI + AC)P- is considered, where P-+/- are the Cauchy projectors, A = (m)Sigma(j=0) a(j)U(j), a, a(j), j = (1, m) over bar, are continuous functions on the unit circle T, U is the shift operator and C is the operator of complex conjugation. Some estimates for the dimension of the kernel of the operator K are obtained.Fundacao para a Ciencia e Tecnologia (Portugal) through Centro de Analise Funcional e Aplicacoes of Instituto Superior Tecnicoinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
