Assessment of carotenoid production by Dunaliella salina in different culture systems and operation regimes

    Get PDF
The effect of operation regime and culture system on carotenoid productivity by the halotolerant alga Dunaliella salina has been analyzed. Operation strategies tested included batch and semi continuous regime, as well as a two-stage approach run simultaneously in both, open tanks and closed reactor. The best results were obtained with the closed tubular photobioreactor. The highest carotenoid production (328.8 mg carotenoid l−1 culture per month) was achieved with this culture system operated following the two-stage strategy. Also, closed tubular photobioreactor provided the highest carotenoid contents (10% of dry weight) in Dunaliella biomass and β-carotene abundance (90% of total carotenoids) as well as the highest 9-cis to all-trans β-carotene isomer ratio (1.5 at sunrise).Comisión Interministerial de Ciencia y Tecnología IFD 1997-1780IFAPA CO3-125Plan Andaluz de Investigación CVI13

Constructing three emotion knowledge tests from the invariant measurement approach

Background. Psychological constructionist models like the Conceptual Act Theory (CAT) postulate that complex states such as emotions are composed of basic psychological ingredients that are more clearly respected by the brain than basic emotions. The objective of this study was the construction and initial validation of Emotion Knowledge measures from the CAT frame by means of an invariant measurement approach, the Rasch Model (RM). Psychological distance theory was used to inform item generation. Methods. Three EK testsemotion vocabulary (EV), close emotional situations (CES) and far emotional situations (FES)were constructed and tested with the RM in a community sample of 100 females and 100 males (age range: 18-65), both separately and conjointly. Results. It was corroborated that data-RM fit was sufficient. Then, the effect of type of test and emotion on Rasch-modelled item difficulty was tested. Significant effects of emotion on EK item difficulty were found, but the only statistically significant difference was that between "happiness" and the remaining emotions; neither type of test, nor interaction effects on EK item difficulty were statistically significant. The testing of gender differences was carried out after corroborating that differential item functioning (DIF) would not be a plausible alternative hypothesis for the results. No statistically significant sex-related differences were found out in EV, CES, FES, or total EK. However, the sign of d indicate that female participants were consistently better than male ones, a result that will be of interest for future meta-analyses. Discussion. The three EK tests are ready to be used as components of a higher-level measurement process.Fil: Delgado, Ana R.. Universidad de Salamanca; EspañaFil: Prieto, Gerardo. Measuring inequality and dependences between income sources with administrative data and survey data

    Get PDF
Producción CientíficaThis paper aims at analyzing the effects of changing from survey to administrative data on inequality and its structure. Taking advantage of the Spanish Survey on Income and Living Conditions (ECV) that continued asking households for their income despite assigning them the income data provided by the Tax Agency and the Social Security administration, different analyses are carried out. By using copula functions we pay special attention to the effect on the dependences between income sources. We find a significant growth in the disposable income of households when using administrative data. The incomes of both tails of the distribution increase considerably more than middle incomes, and administrative data produce significantly lower levels of inequality. Using administrative instead of survey data also gives rise to changes in the structure of inequality by income sources, rising the contribution of capital income. Both methods of data collection also produce significant differences in the observed dependences between income sources.Economía Aplicad

England in the Work of Diego de Valera (1412-1488)

Diego de Valera (1412-1488) was a scholar and diplomat in the service of the Juan II, Enrique IV, and the Catholic Monarchs in fifteenth-century Castile. Although his specula principis, chronicles and epistles have been much studied from a historical and historiographical point of view, no work to date has focused on their references to England. The extracts that in them relate to the English court and nobility will be selected and analysed here, with the aim of clarifying what aspects of the geography, monarchy and courtly customs of fifteenth-century England became known to the Castilian aristocracy through De Valera’s work. They also first reveal details about his diplomatic embassy to England in 1442. This BA Dissertation intends to contribute an unexplored chapter of the historical and cultural relations between Castile and England during the 1400s.Diego de Valera (1412-1488) fue un diplomático y erudito al servicio de Juan II, Enrique IV e Isabel y Fernando en la Castilla del siglo XV.

Benefits of Dealing with Sociocultural Aspects in the English Language Classroom

    Get PDF
Sociocultural aspects could be defined as those aspects related to social and cultural factors, this means, habits, traditions, and beliefs usually present in different groups of people. Since the beginning of the Sociocultural approach late in the 20th century, a lot of studies have been carried out to show the benefits of teaching sociocultural aspects in the English language classroom. As such, this final master's thesis intends to demonstrate the importance of teaching and assessing sociocultural aspects to future generations in the English language classroom. For this reason, this final master’s thesis is based on the design of a feasible seven-sessions didactic unit on the culture of six different English-speaking countries. This didactic unit could be carried out at the end of the first term with 2nd year of Compulsory Secondary Education students.
