    Geodesic bipancyclicity of the Cartesian product of graphs

    A cycle containing a shortest path between two vertices uu and vv in a graph GG is called a (u,v)(u,v)-geodesic cycle. A connected graph GG is geodesic 2-bipancyclic, if every pair of vertices u,vu,v of it is contained in a (u,v)(u,v)-geodesic cycle of length ll for each even integer ll satisfying 2d+2lV(G),2d + 2\leq l \leq |V(G)|, where dd is the distance between uu and v.v. In this paper, we prove that the Cartesian product of two geodesic hamiltonian graphs is a geodesic 2-bipancyclic graph. As a consequence, we show that for n2n \geq 2 every nn-dimensional torus is a geodesic 2-bipancyclic graph

    Antidiabetic activity of Plumeria rubra L. in normal and alloxan induced diabetic mice

    Background: Diabetes mellitus is a major source of morbidity in developed countries. In spite of the introduction of hypoglycemic agents, diabetes and related complications continue to be a major medical problem. Our present study aims to investigate the antidiabetic activity of aqueous extract of plumeria rubra (PR) in experimental animals.Methods: PR extract was subjected to antidiabetic study in alloxan induced diabetic model at three-dose levels 100,200 and 400 mg/kg respectively. It was also tested for hypoglycemic activity at same dose levels. Diabetes was induced by alloxan monohydrate (150 mg/kg, i.p.). PR extracts and standard drug glibenclamide (10 mg/kg, p.o.) was administered to animals for 28 days. The blood glucose, serum cholesterol, serum triglyceride, high density lipoprotein, low density lipoprotein, glycosylated hemoglobin. Body weights were assessed in the experimental animals. Histopathological observations during 28 days treatment were also evaluated.Results: PR extract induced significant reduction (P<0.001) in fasting blood glucose levels in normal and alloxan-induced diabetic mice. Significant differences were observed in serum lipid profiles, glycosylated haemoglobin by extract treated-diabetic animals, when compared with the diabetic control and normal animals. The protective effect of PR was also evident from the histopathological examination on pancreas, liver and kidney. It reduced the injuries induced by alloxan.Conclusions: PR exhibited significant antihyperglycemic activity in normal and alloxan-induced diabetic mice. The results of the present study provide support to the traditional usage of the plant in diabetes

    PRELIMINARY STUDIES ON BRAIN TARGETING OF INTRANASAL ATOMOXETINE LIPOSOMES

    Objective: The objective of the present study was to evaluate the enhancement in brain uptake of liposomes containing atomoxetine (ATX-Lipo) for intranasal delivery in the management of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).Methods: ATX-Lipo and ATX mucoadhesive liposomes (ATX-Muco Lipo) with and without a vasoconstrictor phenylephrine (PHE) were prepared by lipid film hydration method and characterized for physicochemical parameters. Biodistribution and pharmacokinetic evaluation of ATX-Lipo in the brain and blood of Sprague Dawley rats following intranasal (i. n.) and intravenous (i. v.) administrations were examined using optimized technetium-labeled ([99]m Tc-labeled) atomoxetine formulations. Gamma scintigraphy imaging was performed in Sprague Dawley rats.Results: ATX-Lipo and ATX-Muco Lipo were found to be stable with average particle size of 404.35±1.86 nm and 510.50±1.22 nm respectively.[99]mTc tagged ATX-Lipo, ATX-Muco Lipo, ATX+PHE-Muco Lipo and ATX solution were found to be stable and suitable for in vivo studies. On comparing ATX concentrations after i. n. administrations of ATX-Lipo, ATX-Muco Lipo and ATX+PHE-Muco Lipo and i. v. administration of ATX-Lipo, brain/blood uptake ratios (BBR) at 30 min were found to be 0.161, 1.255, 0.331, and 0.003 respectively. These results revealed effective brain targeting following i. n. administration of mucoadhesive ATX liposomes. Higher drug targeting efficiency (% DTE) and direct transport percentage (%DTP) for mucoadhesive liposomes indicated considerable brain targeting from ATX-Muco liposomes. Gamma scintigraphy imaging of the rat brain conclusively demonstrated the greater extent of transport of atomoxetine by ATX+PHE-Muco Lipo (i. n.), when compared with ATX solution (i. n.) into the rat brain.Conclusion: This preliminary investigation demonstrates a considerable extent of transport of ATX into the brain through i. n.     Effect of botanicals and insecticides seed treatment and containers on seed longevity of black gram under natural ageing conditions

    Good storage is the basic requirement in seed production programme as maintenance of high seed viability and vigour from harvest to planting is of utmost importance in a seed production programme. Therefore, inexpensive, simple and practicable technology to prolong the shelf life of seeds under ambient condition is immensely needed. Hence, an experiment was carried out to study the effect of seed treatment with neem oil, nimbicidin, emamectin benzoate 5 SG, deltamethrin 2.8 EC, novuluron EC on black gram seed quality under ambient conditions. The seeds without any seed treatment were included as control. The treated and untreated seeds were stored in cloth bag and polylined cloth bag. The results revealed that, botanicals and emamectin benzoate seed treatments were significantly superior in controlling the storage insect and maintaining higher seed quality up to 10 months of storage when compared to control. Among the chemicals, the emamectin benzoate 5 SG @ 40 mg kg-1 of seed found better by recording significantly higher germination percentage (80.28), vigour index I (2124) and dry weight of seedlings (43.14 mg) and lower electrical conductivity (0.939 dSm-1) and seed damage (0.00 %) compared to control (78.78%, 2012, 38.90 mg, 0.942 dSm-1, respectively) at the end of 10th month of storage.     Knowledge and perception about generic drugs in patients coming to OPD of tertiary care centre

    Background: In an era of rapidly rising health care costs generic medicines provide a less expensive alternative to branded medicines. In addition to reducing the overall health care expenditure, it has been shown to improve adherence. Objective was to study knowledge and perception about generic drugs among patients coming to outpatient department of tertiary care centre.Methods: After ethical approval a cross sectional questionnaire based study was conducted. Patients (n=71) were interviewed according to questionnaire in vernacular language by investigator to fill questionnaire.Results: About 28% people think that price of generic drug is less than a branded drug while nearly 61% of people don’t know of it. Only 18.85% participants had taken generic medicine. Trusting efficacy of generic drugs only 30 participants were in favour it. Even they have not seen or heard publicity of generic drugs (61.97%). They (60.56%) opined that generic drugs never prescribe in our country.Conclusions: Limitation in knowledge and perception about generic medicines has been seen among participants

    Study of Thermoelectric Generator for Harnessing of the heat energy wasted from automobiles and Thermal Power Plant

    The ever growing huge demand for electricity needs is to be fulfilled with taking in consideration the environment factor. Thus, recycling of energy must be done as effectively as possible. Harnessing of the heat energy wasted from automobiles, industries, domestic appliances etc. all of which can generate power is proposed in this paper. Industries and automobile sector is the main source for the supply of waste heat which can generate power that can be further used for powering various accessories thus increasing the overall efficiency of the system itself. Technology under study in this paper for waste heat recovery is called TEG which stands for Thermo Electric Generators based on the See beck effect. TEG is a device which makes use of the temperature gradient across it to generate an electromotive force (EMF). TEGs are most suitable for waste heat recovery applications due to lack of mechanical parts, low maintenance and high durability and are proved in space missions over the past decades. The focus of this paper is to study characteristics of TEG and factors affecting its performance in turn reducing the environmental impact.     Knowledge attitude and practice of haemovigilance among doctors in tertiary care hospital in Nagpur, Maharashtra, India

    Background: Haemovigilance program of India was launched on December 2012 and is a comprehensive, and a well-structured approach to collect, collate, and analyse data to address the issues of adverse reactions associated with blood transfusion. The information thus collected would facilitate corrective and preventive actions to be taken to minimize the potential risk associated blood collection processing and transfusion to patients. Considering the deep concern over the under-reporting of transfusion reactions prevailing among the doctors, the present study was done to know the knowledge attitude and practice (KAP) of haemovigilance among doctors.Methods: The present study was a cross sectional questionnaire based study, which included doctors of a tertiary care hospital. The purpose of the questionnaire was to know awareness of doctors regarding haemovigilance programme of India. With this study we also tried to   identify the factors responsible for underreporting of transfusion reactions and to find out the possible ways to improve reporting of transfusion reactions.Results: (38.88%) and (30%) of the responders were aware of the haemovigilance programme and transfusion reaction reporting centre respectively. Reporting of transfusion reaction was poor 22.22% among the respondents. According to respondents creating awareness about haemovigilance by conducting continuing medical education (CMEs), and   training to healthcare professionals would lead to improvement in reporting of transfusion reactions. Complacency and ignorance were the main factors which discouraged transfusion reaction reporting by doctors.Conclusions: Increasing awareness of haemovigilance among doctors and training on reporting transfusion reactions would likely improve spontaneous reporting and help to strengthen the blood transfusion system

    Study of variation in price of various antidiabetic drugs available in Indian market

    Background: Diabetes mellitus in early age is on the alarming rise in India, requiring lifelong treatment. There is a wide range of variation in the prices of antidiabetic drugs marketed in India. Hence, we decided to study price variations in the oral antidiabetic drugs available, either singly or in combination, and number of manufacturing companies for each, and to evaluate the difference in cost of different brands of same active drug by calculating percentage variation of cost.Methods: Cost of a particular drug being manufactured by different companies, in the same strength and dosage forms was obtained from “Current Index of Medical Specialties” July-October 2014 and “Indian Drug Review” July 2014. The difference in the maximum and minimum price of the same drug, manufactured by different pharmaceutical companies and percentage variation in price was calculated.Results: Percentage price variation among different group of drugs was found to be as follows: in sulfonylureas, it was highest in glimepiride 2 mg 836.44%, among biguanides - metformin 500 mg 245.55%, among thiazolidionediones-pioglitazone 15 mg 600%, among α glucosidase inhibitors - voglibose 284.61% and meglitinides - repaglinide 0.5 mg 181.40%. Among combination therapy glimepiride 1 mg + metformin 500 mg 366.66%, pioglitazone + metformin 207.51%, pioglitazone + glimepiride 268.42% showed maximum variation in price.Conclusion: The average percentage price variation of different brands of the same oral antidiabetic drug manufactured in India is very wide. The appropriate changes in the government policy, sensitizing the prescribers about cost of therapy and proper management of marketing drugs should be directed toward maximizing the benefits of therapy and minimizing negative economic consequences

    Background: Vitamin-D is critically important for development, growth and maintenance of health of human being. Many evidences show association between vit-D deficiency and several serious health conditions. Data collection on use of drugs is being obtained with the aim of optimizing drug therapy. So far till date only few studies about prescription pattern of vit-D have been found. Hence it is very important to do audit of prescriptions of vit-D. The aim of the study is to provide concise and updated information about the use of vit-D in tertiary care hospital and to record demographic details of patients.Methods: After ethical approval, this cross sectional study was conducted at tertiary health centre. Patient and drug data (name of drug, dose, dosage form and route of administration) was collected from the patient’s prescriptions in OPD.Results: Highest prescriptions of vit-D were found in orthopedic department (22% of total prescriptions of that department). Prescribing percentage of vit-D in medicine department was 4.6%, dermatology 1.5% and in psychiatry 0.8% of total prescriptions. Prescriptions of vit-D in combination with calcium were found in orthopedics (52%), medicine (7%) and obstetrics and gynecology (10%) departments.Conclusions: Highest prescriptions of vit-D alone and with calcium found in orthopedic department. Periodic therapeutic audit is necessary to rationalise the use of vit D
