    A Ritchey-Chretien telescope is described which was designed to respond to images located off the optical axis by using two transparent flat plates positioned in the ray path of the image. The flat plates have a tilt angle relative to the ray path to compensate for astigmatism introduced by the telescope. The tilt angle of the plates is directly proportional to the off axis angle of the image. The plates have opposite inclination angles relative to the ray paths. A detector which is responsive to the optical image as transmitted through the plates is positioned approximately on the sagittal focus of the telescope

    Mode hopping strongly affects observability of dynamical instability in optical parametric oscillators

    Theoretical investigations of dynamical behavior in optical parametric oscillators (OPO) have generally assumed that the cavity detunings of the interacting fields are controllable parameters. However, OPOs are known to experience mode hops, where the system jumps to the mode of lowest cavity detuning. We note that this phenomenon significantly limits the range of accessible detunings and thus may prevent instabilities predicted to occur above a minimum detuning from being evidenced experimentally. As a simple example among a number of instability mechanisms possibly affected by this limitation, we discuss the Hopf bifurcation leading to periodic behavior in the monomode mean-field model of a triply resonant OPO and show that it probably can be observed only in very specific setups.Comment: submitted to Phys.     Uncertainty in the measurement of indoor temperature and humidity in naturally ventilated dairy buildings as influenced by measurement technique and data variability

    [EN] The microclimatic conditions in dairy buildings affect animal welfare and gaseous emissions. Measurements are highly variable due to the inhomogeneous distribution of heat and humidity sources (related to farm management) and the turbulent inflow (associated with meteorologic boundary conditions). The selection of the measurement strategy (number and position of the sensors) and the analysis methodology adds to the uncertainty of the applied measurement technique. To assess the suitability of different sensor positions, in situations where monitoring in the direct vicinity of the animals is not possible, we collected long-term data in two naturally ventilated dairy barns in Germany between March 2015 and April 2016 (horizontal and vertical profiles with 10 to 5 min temporal resolution). Uncertainties related to the measurement setup were assessed by comparing the device outputs under lab conditions after the on-farm experiments. We found out that the uncertainty in measurements of relative humidity is of particular importance when assessing heat stress risk and resulting economic losses in terms of temperature-humidity index. Measurements at a height of approximately 3 m-3.5 m turned out to be a good approximation for the microclimatic conditions in the animal occupied zone (including the air volume close to the emission active zone). However, further investigation along this cross-section is required to reduce uncertainties related to the inhomogeneous distribution of humidity. In addition, a regular sound cleaning (and if possible recalibration after few months) of the measurement devices is crucial to reduce the instrumentation uncertainty in long-term monitoring of relative humidity in dairy barns (C) 2017 The Authors.     Mitotic entry in the presence of DNA damage is a widespread property of aneuploidy in yeast

    Genetic instability is a hallmark of aneuploidy in budding and fission yeast. All aneuploid yeast strains analyzed to date harbor elevated levels of Rad52-GFP foci, a sign of DNA damage. Here we investigate how continuously elevated levels of DNA damage affect aneuploid cells. We show that Rad52-GFP foci form during S phase, consistent with the observation that DNA replication initiation and elongation are impaired in some aneuploid yeast strains. We furthermore find that although DNA damage is low in aneuploid cells, it nevertheless has dramatic consequences. Many aneuploid yeast strains adapt to DNA damage and undergo mitosis despite the presence of unrepaired DNA leading to cell death. Wild-type cells exposed to low levels of DNA damage exhibit a similar phenotype, indicating that adaptation to low levels of unrepaired DNA is a general property of the cell's response to DNA damage. Our results indicate that by causing low levels of DNA damage, whole-chromosome aneuploidies lead to DNA breaks that persist into mitosis. Such breaks provide the substrate for translocations and deletions that are a hallmark of cancer

    Survie et croissance des juvéniles hybrides issus du croisement intergénérique Oreochromis niloticus (linnaeus, 1758) et Sarotherodon melanotheron (rüppel, 1852) en milieu lagunaire

    Cette étude a évalué les performances zootechniques des hybrides F2 issus du croisement intergénérique entre Oreochromis niloticus et Sarotherodon melanotheron et comparé à celles des parents en élevage en milieu lagunaire. Des essais de pré grossissement en élevage monosexe mâle et femelle ont été réalisés pendant 112 jours en bacs en béton (4 m3) avec des juvéniles (9±1 g) à la densité de 11,3 poissons/m3. Les hybrides ♀O. niloticus x ♂S. melanotheron (OS) et ♀S. melanotheron x ♂O. niloticus (SO) et le parent S. melanotheron ont eu des taux de survie de 100 ± 0,00% contre 88,05 ± 0,25% (femelles) et 89,70 ± 2,07% (mâles) pour O. niloticus. Les paramètres de croissance sont cependant plus élevés chez O. niloticus lorsque les sexes sont comparés. Les femelles des deux groupes d’hybrides ont enregistré les plus faibles valeurs de croissance. En revanche, chez les mâles, la croissance des deux groupes d’hybrides a été significativement plus élevée (P<0,05) que celle du parent S. melanotheron. Par ailleurs, les hybrides mâles OS ont eu de meilleures performances de croissance par rapport aux hybrides mâles SO. L’hybride mâle ♀O. niloticus x ♂S. melanotheron serait donc un meilleur candidat pour l’aquaculture lagunaire.Mots clés : hybridation, poisson, tilapia, élevage, eau saumâtre
