    Impacting of droplets on moving surface and inclined surfaces

    Drop impact onto inclined and moving surfaces are seen in various applications, for example, inkjet printing, spray coating, or in agriculture; droplets impact on either the surface that is moving, inclined, or a combination of both. Studies in the literature have examined the phenomenon of drop impact in isolation, either for a moving surface, or an inclined surface. Therefore, we conducted a comparative study for drop impact onto moving and inclined surfaces to see if they can be considered as equivalent systems. We used high speed imaging and examined the spreading and splashing of droplet impact onto both inclined and moving surfaces, having the same normal and tangential (in-plane) velocities. Various liquids with viscosities and surface tensions in the range of 1-5 cSt 17.4-72.8 mNm, respectively, were used. We demonstrated that both systems are equivalent to one another, considering either the initial spreading behavior of droplets, or splashing. Different types of splashing seen on inclined and moving surfaces are similar regardless of system. Finally, a new type of splashing named "split splashing"was also reported. This type of splashing is seen only when the normal velocity relative to tangential velocity is very low

    Is drop impact the same for both moving and inclined surfaces?

    Drop impact is an important phenomenon in a wide variety of applications. Researchers have largely examined drop impact onto a moving surface, and an inclined surface separately. Given that in both systems the impact phenomenon is influenced by tangential and normal velocity components, the question remains, if these two systems are essentially equivalent or gravity and boundary layer effects are such that the outcomes will be different. Experiments have been performed by varying liquid surface tension, viscosity and both normal and tangential velocities (0.3 to 2.9 m/s). The desired velocity components were achieved by changing the height where drop is released, the surface inclination angle for inclined system, and the horizontal velocity for the moving surface. To compare the systems, spreading was analyzed by measuring the width and length of the lamella at various time intervals; for splashing, top view images were compared to see the extent of splashing at initial stage. The data suggests that, for the given velocity, neither the boundary layer differences between the two systems nor the gravity play a role on spreading and splashing of the drop, as such one system can replace the other for future studies

    A ROBUST SUPERHYDROPHOBIC SURFACE FOR DIGITAL MICROFLUIDICS

    ABSTRACT Digital microfluidics depends on efficient movement of individual drops for a variety of tasks, e.g. reagent delivery, mixing, sampling, etc. Superhydrophobic (SH) coatings generally show high repellency and low adhesion for a variety 5 of liquids. Therefore, SH coatings can provide for an efficient drop delivery and hence low energy requirements for a fluidic chip. However, wide application of such coatings is hampered by fragile nature of such coatings to date. A new SH coating is developed that addresses the fragility challenge of such 10 coatings. It is based on application of nanoparticles to fluoropolymers. The mechanical stability, wear resistance and durability under prolonged liquid exposure of this new coating is discussed. It is shown that the new SH coating can maintain high contact angles, low contact angle hysteresis needed for 15 drop mobility under adverse conditions/application of digital microfluidic devices. The developed SH coating can also be sprayed onto various surfaces, including glass used in traditional lab-on-chip (LOC) devices, or even paper for enabling novel Lap-on-paper (LOP) devices. 20

    Thermodynamics of heterogeneous crystal nucleation in contact and immersion modes

    One of most intriguing problems of heterogeneous crystal nucleation in droplets is its strong enhancement in the contact mode (when the foreign particle is presumably in some kind of contact with the droplet surface) compared to the immersion mode (particle immersed in the droplet). Many heterogeneous centers have different nucleation thresholds when they act in contact or immersion modes, indicating that the mechanisms may be actually different for the different modes. Underlying physical reasons for this enhancement have remained largely unclear. In this paper we present a model for the thermodynamic enhancement of heterogeneous crystal nucleation in the contact mode compared to the immersion one. To determine if and how the surface of a liquid droplet can thermodynamically stimulate its heterogeneous crystallization, we examine crystal nucleation in the immersion and contact modes by deriving and comparing with each other the reversible works of formation of crystal nuclei in these cases. As a numerical illustration, the proposed model is applied to the heterogeneous nucleation of Ih crystals on generic macroscopic foreign particles in water droplets at T=253 K. Our results show that the droplet surface does thermodynamically favor the contact mode over the immersion one. Surprisingly, our numerical evaluations suggest that the line tension contribution to this enhancement from the contact of three water phases (vapor-liquid-crystal) may be of the same order of magnitude as or even larger than the surface tension contribution

    Magnetic Hydroxyapatite Bone Substitutes to Enhance Tissue Regeneration: Evaluation In Vitro Using Osteoblast-Like Cells and In Vivo in a Bone Defect

    In case of degenerative disease or lesion, bone tissue replacement and regeneration is an important clinical goal. In particular, nowadays, critical size defects rely on the engineering of scaffolds that are 3D structural supports, allowing cellular infiltration and subsequent integration with the native tissue. Several ceramic hydroxyapatite (HA) scaffolds with high porosity and good osteointegration have been developed in the past few decades but they have not solved completely the problems related to bone defects. In the present study we have developed a novel porous ceramic composite made of HA that incorporates magnetite at three different ratios: HA/Mgn 95/5, HA/Mgn 90/10 and HA/Mgn 50/50. The scaffolds, consolidated by sintering at high temperature in a controlled atmosphere, have been analysed in vitro using human osteoblast-like cells. Results indicate high biocompatibility, similar to a commercially available HA bone graft, with no negative effects arising from the presence of magnetite or by the use of a static magnetic field. HA/Mgn 90/10 was shown to enhance cell proliferation at the early stage. Moreover, it has been implanted in vivo in a critical size lesion of the rabbit condyle and a good level of histocompatibility was observed. Such results identify this scaffold as particularly relevant for bone tissue regeneration and open new perspectives for the application of a magnetic field in a clinical setting of bone replacement, either for magnetic scaffold fixation or magnetic drug delivery

    Diverse perspectives on interdisciplinarity from the Members of the College of the Royal Society of Canada

    Various multiple-disciplinary terms and concepts (although most commonly “interdisciplinarity”, which is used herein) are used to frame education, scholarship, research, and interactions within and outside academia. In principle, the premise of interdisciplinarity may appear to have many strengths; yet, the extent to which interdisciplinarity is embraced by the current generation of academics, the benefits and risks for doing so, and the barriers and facilitators to achieving interdisciplinarity represent inherent challenges. Much has been written on the topic of interdisciplinarity, but to our knowledge there have been few attempts to consider and present diverse perspectives from scholars, artists, and scientists in a cohesive manner. As a team of 57 members from the Canadian College of New Scholars, Artists, and Scientists of the Royal Society of Canada (the College) who self-identify as being engaged or interested in interdisciplinarity, we provide diverse intellectual, cultural, and social perspectives. The goal of this paper is to share our collective wisdom on this topic with the broader community and to stimulate discourse and debate on the merits and challenges associated with interdisciplinarity. Perhaps the clearest message emerging from this exercise is that working across established boundaries of scholarly communities is rewarding, necessary, and is more likely to result in impact. However, there are barriers that limit the ease with which this can occur (e.g., lack of institutional structures and funding to facilitate cross-disciplinary exploration). Occasionally, there can be significant risk associated with doing interdisciplinary work (e.g., lack of adequate measurement or recognition of work by disciplinary peers). Solving many of the world’s complex and pressing problems (e.g., climate change, sustainable agriculture, the burden of chronic disease, and aging populations) demand thinking and working across long-standing, but in some ways restrictive, academic boundaries. Academic institutions and key support structures, especially funding bodies, will play an important role in helping to realize what is readily apparent to all who contributed to this paper—that interdisciplinarity is essential for solving complex problems; it is the new norm. Failure to empower and encourage those doing this research will serve as a great impediment to training, knowledge, and addressing societal issues
