    Get PDF
Removal of xylene (a toxic compound) from aqueous solution by modified multi wall carbon nano tubes (MWCNT) via silica as sheeted carbon nanotube (SCNT) was evaluated. The physicochemical properties of MWCNT such as structure and availability surface were improved due to convert tubes into sheets that cause significantly increase in xylene adsorption. The equilibrium amount (qe (mg/g)) in nano material's dose of 1g/l, xylene concentration of 10mg/l, contact time of 10min, and pH 7, for SCNT (qe 9.8 mg/g) was higher than single wall carbon nano tubes (SWCNT) (qe 9.2 mg/g) and MWCNT (qe 8.9 mg/g). It is concluded that sheeted carbon nanotube due to their large surface area improve performance of xylene adsorption. Also carbon nano tube (CNT) recycling by heating, showed better adsorption performance for recycled SCNT. A comparison study on xylene adsorption revealed that sheeted carbon nanotube has better xylene adsorption performance as compared to CNT, carbon and silica adsorbents. This suggests that the SCNT is an efficient adsorbent for xylene removal in environmental pollutions cleanup. The removal of ethylbenzene (E) from aqueous solution by multiwalled, single-walled, and hybrid carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs, SWCNTs, and HCNTs) was evaluated for a nanomaterial dose of 1 g/L, concentration of 10–100 mg/L, and pH 7. The equilibrium amount removed by SWCNTs (E: 9.98 mg/g) was higher than by MWCNTs and HCNTs. Ethylbenzene has a higher adsorption tendency on CNTs, so that more than 98% of it adsorbed in first 14 min, which is related to the low water solubility and the high molecular weight. The SWCNTs performed better for ethylbenzene sorption than the HCNTs and MWCNTs. Isotherms study indicates that the BET isotherm expression provides the best fit for ethylbenzene sorption by SWCNTs. Carbon nanotubes, specially SWCNTs, are efficient and rapid adsorbents for ethylbenzene which possess good potential applications to maintain high-quality water. Therefore, it could be used for cleaning up environmental pollution to prevent ethylbenzene borne diseases

Numerical analysis of axial cyclic behavior of FRP retrofitted CHS joints

    Get PDF
This paper aims to numerically investigate the cyclic behavior of retrofitted and non-retrofitted circular hollow section (CHS) T-joints under axial loading. Different joints with varying ratios of brace to chord radius are studied. The effects of welding process on buckling instability of the joints in compression and the plastic failure in tension are considered. The finite element method is employed for numerical analysis, and the SAC protocol is considered as cyclic loading scheme. The CHS joints are retrofitted with different numbers of Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) layers with varying orientation. The results show that the welding process significantly increases the plastic failure potential. The chord ovalization is the dominant common buckling mode under the compression load. However, it is possible to increase the energy dissipation of the joints by utilizing FRP composite through changing the buckling mode to the brace overall buckling

This paper aims to investigate the buckling behavior of circular hollow section (CHS) Tjoints in retrofitted and non-retrofitted states under axial brace compressive loading. For this purpose, two types of analysis are carried out. The first one is evaluating the critical buckling load in various tubular joints, and the other one is investigating the post-buckling behavior after each buckling mode. More than 180 CHS T-joints with various normalized geometric properties were numerically modeled in non-retrofitted state to compute their governing buckling mode, i.e., chord ovalization, brace local, or global buckling. Then three joints with different buckling modes were selected to be retrofitted by fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) patches to illustrate the improving effect of the FRP wrapping on the post-buckling performance of the retrofitted joints. In addition, FRP composite failures were investigated. The results indicate that the FRP retrofitting is able to prevent the brace local buckling, and that matrix failure is the most common composite failure in the retrofitted joints

    Get PDF
The differential transform method DTM is applied to the steady three-dimensional problem of a condensation film on an inclined rotating disk. With similarity method, the governing equations can be reduced to a system of nonlinear ordinary differential equations. The approximate solutions of these equations are obtained in the form of series with easily computable terms. The velocity and temperature profiles are shown and the influence of Prandtl number on the temperature profiles is discussed in detail. The validity of our solutions is verified by the numerical results

The aim of this cross-sectional study was to investigate the relationship between body mass index (BMI), waist-to-hip ratio, and lipid parameters and serum thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels in healthy euthyroid individuals. This cross-sectional study was conducted between June 1st and July 20th, 2013, at Bushehr University of Medical Sciences. One hundred forty euthyroid individuals were divided into 2 groups: a high-TSH group (TSH between 2.0 and 5.5 mIU/L, n=67) and a low-TSH group (TSH between 0.3 and 2.0 mIU/L, n=73). After overnight fast, total cholesterol, triglyceride (TG), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), TSH, thyroxine (T4), and triiodothyronine (T3) were measured. Height and weight were measured with a stadiometer, and BMI was calculated as weight in kilograms divided by the square of height in meters. Waistto- hip ratio was determined as waist circumference divided by hip circumference. The simple independent t-test and a general linear model were used for statistical analysis. All statistical analyses were done using the SPSS, version 15, statistical software package. BMI and LDL-C were significantly higher in the high-TSH group than in the low-TSH group after adjustment for age, sex, calorie intake, total fat and carbohydrate intakes, and physical activity. No significant differences were found between the groups in TG, cholesterol, and HDL-C. The association between TSH levels andT4 was significant. Individuals with TSH levels at the upper limit of normality might be at risk of hypercholesterolemia and obesity
