Chemical and biological analyses were integrated using remote sensing GIS techniques to evaluate the environmental pollution of El-Temsah Lake, in the Suez Canal, in order to provide critical data to enhance development planning and economic projects within the study area. Fifty-six samples were collected from seven sites in the lake from July 2005 to May 2006. Samples were collected in each of four seasons, and included 28 surface sediment samples and 28 water samples. Sediment samples were analyzed for Fe, Pb, Ni, Co, Cu, Mg, K and Na. The results showed an increase in beach sediment pollution from summer to winter. Taxonomic analysis of phytoplankton samples revealed 102 taxa, including 56 Bacillariophyceae, 8 Chlorophyceae, 18 Dinophyceae and 20 Cyanophyceae. Chlorophyll a concentrations ranged from 0.3 to 26 µg l-1, with the highest values during the winter and lowest values during the summer. These results suggest that beach sediment pollution is highest in the winter and, at the same time, the water quality conditions in El-Temsah lake favor oxidation conditions which maximize phytoplankton productivity. In contrast, sediment pollution and phytoplankton productivity are lowest during summer, which also corresponds to more alkaline water conditions. The images were rectified and analyzed by ERDAS IMAGINE 8.9. A 1968 topographic map and enhanced 2005 Landsat Thematic Mapper images (30 m resolution) were utilized to determine the coastline positions using ERDAS Imagine 8.9. Image processing techniques were applied using ENVI 4.2 to analyze the ETM+ image data. Image enhancement was applied. Image data was enhanced spectrally to verify surface water pollution detected from chemical and biological analyses and to detect the sources of untreated domestic, industrial and agricultural waste water. In general, the lake has been subjected to successive shrinking due to human activities, primarily through extensive building along the shoreline. The uncontrolled growth of cities is associated with seismic hazards, affecting on buildings and infrastructures, mostly due to insufficient knowledge of earthquakes activity. Seismic epicentres were recorded along the Suez Canal from 1904 to 2006. Widespread moderate to micro earthquakes were identified around the western side of the lake, with scattered events along the eastern side. In general, water pollution in El-Temsah Lake has been mitigated over the last decade due to successive dredging and improved water treatment. Most of untreated water was discharged along the western side of the lake. The eastern part of the lake is less polluted and is, therefore, more suited for fishing, tourism, urban planning and navigation activities, although higher use of eastern portion of the lake could accelerate water and sediment quality deterioration in that region

Eight-Chain and Full-Network Models and Their Modified Versions for Rubber Hyperelasticity: A Comparative Study

The eight-chain model, also known as Arruda-Boyce model, is widely used to capture the rate-independent hyperelastic response of rubber-like materials. The parameters of this model are physically based and explained from micromechanics of chain molecules. Despite its excellent performance with only two material parameters to capture bench measurements in uniaxial and pure shear regime, the model is known to be significantly deficient in predicting the equibiaxial data. To ameliorate such drawback, over the years, several modified versions of this successful model have been proposed in the literature. The so-called full-network model is another micromechanically motivated chain model, which has also few modified versions in the literature. For this study, two modified versions of the full-network model have been selected. In this contribution, five modified versions of the Arruda-Boyce model and two modified versions of full-network model are critically compared with the classical eight-chain model for their adequacy in representing equibiaxial data. To do a comparison of all selected models in reproducing the well-known Treloar data, the analytical expressions for the three homogeneous deformation modes, that is, uniaxial tension, equibiaxial tension, and pure shear have been derived and the performances of the selected models are analysed. The comparative study demonstrates that modified Flory-Erman model, Gornet-Desmorat (GD) model, Meissner-Matějka model, and bootstrapped eight-chain model predict well the three deformation modes compare to the classical eight-chain model

Internship is one of the common practices of higher education institutions in Malaysia for enhancing the learning experience and technical skills among their students. Students who follow the internship programme are found not only to be able to develop their professional attributes but also have the opportunity to acquire professional networks and career paths. Besides being a conventional approach that links students with real-world employment experience for a programme, internship can also be implemented for a specific course within a programme. The article discusses the implementation of an internship programme as a pedagogical approach in providing experiential learning for a specific course, i.e., Foundation and Concrete Work. This study involved 51 second-year students who were pursuing a degree in vocational education at the Universiti Teknologi Malaysia. Analysis on the impact of the internship experience indicates that the internship programme is an effective pedagogical approach for experiential learning for foundation and concrete work course

Irregularity detection in artificial signal using time-frequency analysis

    Get PDF
A typical time signal contain overwhelming amounts of data and some of the signal components represent for irregularity such as crack and leak which greatly important to be identified precisely instead of using traditional method. The strategy can be done using signal processing method through high-quality time-frequency representation (TFR) for analysing such time dependent signals to accurately discover these superposition signal components. A few popular TFR methods such as wavelet transform analysis and relatively new, synchrosqueezed wavelet transform were applied in current study using artificial signal. From the result, both methods successfully discover an irregularity in the signal with different degree of accuracy and it is shown that synchrosqueezed wavelet transform provide the best and detailed time-frequency representation

Eicosapentaenoic Acid (EPA) from Fish Oil and Margarine as Bioactive Compound for Anti-inflammation in Occupational Dermatitis

Occupational dermatitis (OCD) is a skin inflammatory disease caused by allergens and irritant agents in the workplace. The disease is related to hypersensitivity reaction, which is correlated with an immunological mechanism (allergic contact dermatitis) and a nonimmunological mechanism (irritant contact dermatitis). Patients with atopic history (rhinitis allergy, asthma, and atopic dermatitis) have a higher risk of contracting OCD. Atopic individuals suffer from barrier skin damage that increases the risk of allergen and irritant penetration. Inflammatory reaction involves T-helper 1 (Th1), which produces cytokine tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) and interferon-γ (INF-γ), while T-helper 2 (Th2) produces interleukin (IL-4, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10). Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) is an omega-3 substance from polyunsaturated free fatty acids (PUFAs)that has been shown to have an anti-inflammatory effect and the ability to decrease macrophage accumulation. In the inflammatory process, EPA inhibits IL-6, IL-8, and TNF-α, which are mediated by the free fatty acid-binding proteins (FABPs). The aim of this study was to determine the bioactivity compound of EPA for anti-inflammatory agents and its target, based on in silico screening. The bioinformatic tools based on reverse docking used in this study were the PubChem compound database, the protein target prediction database, PharmMapper, SwissTargetPrediction, molecular docking software PyRx 0.8, ligand docking, and binding site analysis using PyMOL software. Docking and binding site analysis showed that EPA was able to interact withFABPs, with the binding affinity of EPA with FABP 4 higher (–4.2 kcal/mol) than that of hydrocortisone with FABP 4 (–7.4 kcal/mol). EPA has the same binding site and relative bonding power as the FABPs; thus, it has potential as an alternative anti-inflammatory medicine in OCD.
