Vitamin D and antimicrobial peptide levels in patients with atopic dermatitis and atopic dermatitis complicated by eczema herpeticum: AÂ pilot study.
In this study, Vitamin D supplementation results in improved clinical severity of atopic dermatitis and increased skin surface LL-37 levels, analyzed by a novel, non-invasive method. Vitamin D supplementation could be a therapeutic option in AD
Atopic dermatitis and vitamin D: facts and controversies
Patients with atopic dermatitis have genetically determined risk factors that affect the barrier function of the skin and immune responses that interact with environmental factors. Clinically, this results in an intensely pruriginous and inflamed skin that allows the penetration of irritants and allergens and predisposes patients to colonization and infection by microorganisms. Among the various etiological factors responsible for the increased prevalence of atopic diseases over the past few decades, the role of vitamin D has been emphasized. As the pathogenesis of AD involves a complex interplay of epidermal barrier dysfunction and dysregulated immune response, and vitamin D is involved in both processes, it is reasonable to expect that vitamin D's status could be associated with atopic dermatitis' risk or severity. Such association is suggested by epidemiological and experimental data. in this review, we will discuss the evidence for and against this controversial relationship, emphasizing the possible etiopathogenic mechanisms involved.Univ Brasilia UNB, Brasilia, DF, BrazilFed Dist Hlth State Dept SES DF, Brasilia, DF, BrazilUniv Brasilia HUB UNB, Brasilia Univ Hosp, Brasilia, DF, BrazilSĂŁo Paulo Fed Univ UNIFESP, Brasilia, DF, BrazilSĂŁo Paulo Fed Univ UNIFESP, Brasilia, DF, BrazilWeb of Scienc
Vitamin D and Reproduction: From Gametes to Childhood
Vitamin D is well recognized for its essentiality in maintaining skeletal health. Recent research has suggested that vitamin D may exert a broad range of roles throughout the human life cycle starting from reproduction to adult chronic disease risk. Rates of vitamin D deficiency during pregnancy remain high worldwide. Vitamin D deficiency has been associated with an increased risk of fertility problems, preeclampsia, gestational diabetes, and allergic disease in the offspring. Vitamin D is found naturally in only a few foods thus supplementation can provide an accessible and effective way to raise vitamin D status when dietary intakes and sunlight exposure are low. However, the possibility of overconsumption and possible adverse effects is under debate. The effect of vitamin D supplementation during pregnancy and early life on maternal and infant outcomes will be of particular focus in this review
Prevalence of Nocturnal Enuresis in School Aged Children The Role of Personal and Parents Related Socio-Economic and Educational Factors
Objective: Nocturnal enuresis is a common psychosocial concern for both
parents and children. In the present study we have determined the
prevalence of nocturnal enuresis in Urmia, Iran children and associated
personal and familial factors with this problem. Methods: A cross
sectional epidemiological study for detection of nocturnal enuresis
prevalence rate and evaluation of associated familial and personal
factors in elementary school children (7-11 years old) from Urmia were
investigated. The subjects were selected by cluster sampling method.
Chi square test and logistic regression were used in univariate and
multivariate respectively. Findings: Of the 1600 questionnaires
distributed, 918 (57%) were completed and included in the final
analysis. The rest, which were not filled by parents and also those out
of our study age range were excluded. Gender of the subjects was almost
equally distributed (48.6% males and 51.4% females). Prevalence of
nocturnal enuresis was 18.7% (n=172) and prevalence of day time
incontinence was 5.5% (n=51). There was no significant gender
difference between these two groups. Enuretics had crowded families,
positive family history, low educational level of parents, jobless
father, working mother, single parent, poor school performance,
positive history of urinary tract infection (UTI). Conclusion: Our
results with enuresis prevalence and associated factors were comparable
to other epidemiological studies from various countries. We found that
Iranian families do not pay sufficient attention to their enuretic
children
