America Davila - Breaking the Cycle: An Examination of Environmental, Cognitive, and Emotional Factors of Intimate Partner Violence Victimization in Adolescence

    Get PDF
Recently, intimate partner violence (IPV) has gained considerable attention as a significant social and public health problem affecting not only adults but also adolescents. Based on Banduraā€™s social learning theory, considerable research has supported a significant link between growing up in a violent home (DV) and youth dating violence. Expanding on previous studies, we explored the cycle of IPV victimization using a sample of 1,067 adolescents (ages 18-25). We examined whether parental support, dating attitudes, and self-esteem are risk and protective factors of receiving dating aggression. The findings indicate that exposure to aggression in the family, low self-esteem, and the acceptance of dating aggression are significant risk factors while high self-esteem and paternal support appear to protect adolescents from the cycle of IPV victimization. Influence of Annealing on the Optical and Scintillation Properties of CaWO4_4 Single Crystals

We investigate the influence of oxygen annealing on the room temperature optical and scintillation properties of CaWO4_4 single crystals that are being produced for direct Dark Matter search experiments. The applied annealing procedure reduces the absorption coefficient at the peak position of the scintillation spectrum (āˆ¼430\sim430 nm) by a factor of āˆ¼6\sim6 and leads to an even larger reduction of the scattering coefficient. Furthermore, the annealing has no significant influence on the \emph{intrinsic} light yield. An additional absorption occurring at āˆ¼400\sim400 nm suggests the formation of Oāˆ’^- hole centers. Light-yield measurements at room temperature where one crystal surface was mechanically roughened showed an increase of the \emph{measured} light yield by āˆ¼40\sim40 % and an improvement of the energy resolution at 59.5 keV by āˆ¼12\sim12 % for the annealed crystal. We ascribe this result to the reduction of the absorption coefficient while the surface roughening is needed to compensate for the also observed reduction of the scattering coefficient after annealing

Jeeg: Temporal Constraints for the Synchronization of Concurrent Objects

    No full text
We introduce Jeeg, a dialect of Java based on a declarative replacement of the synchronization mechanisms of Java that results in a complete decoupling of the 'business' and the 'synchronization' code of classes. Synchronization constraints in Jeeg are expressed in a linear temporal logic which allows to effectively limit the occurrence of the inheritance anomaly that commonly affects concurrent object oriented languages. Jeeg is inspired by the current trend in aspect oriented languages. In a Jeeg program the sequential and concurrent aspects of object behaviors are decoupled: specified separately by the programmer these are then weaved together by the Jeeg compiler

Sending Jobs Overseas: The Cost to Americaā€™s Economy and Working Families

[Excerpt] This report was created by Working America and the AFL-CIO as a companion piece to WorkĀing Americaā€™s Job Tracker, a ZIP code ā€“searchable database of jobs exported (as well as Occupational Safety and Health Act violations and other workĀplace issues). Users can search their area for comĀpanies that have sent jobs overseas. Though Job Tracker is one of the largest publicly available, fully searchable records of the extent and specifics of outsourcing, it only reveals the tip of the iceberg. This report and Job Tracker contextualize each otherā€”Job Tracker by mapping specific job losses due to outsourcing, the report by taking a broad view of the national-level numbers that are availĀable and offering case studies of key industries

Unmanned Aircraft Systems for Archaeology Using Photogrammetry and LiDAR in Southwestern United States

Researchers can use small unmanned aircraft systems (sUAS), also known as drones, to make observations of historical sites, help interpret locations, and make new discoveries that may not be visible to the naked eye. A student team from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University gathered data for historical site documentation in New Mexico using the DJI Phantom 4 Pro V2, DJI Mavic Pro 2, DJI M210 and DJI M600, and senseFly eBee. Utilizing these drones, student analysts were able to take the data gathered and create georectified orthomosaic images and 3D virtual objects. At Tularosa Canyon, at a site known as the Creekside Village, work aimed at imaging an amphitheater like structure (i.e., kiva) that dates back to 600 AD. The team used photogrammetry and LiDAR to determine the location of other manmade structures at the same location. Images were processed with Pix4Dmapper Pro. Team members generated LiDAR point clouds and post processed data in search of undiscovered features and structures

DR-CAFTA and Workerā€™s Rights: Moving from Paper to Practice

This study analyses the ā€œWhite Paperā€ projects and initiatives taken by the US government to improve labor rights practice in DR-CAFTA countries. Based on a three year study, WOLA has concluded that U.S. funding for projects to strengthen the enjoyment and enforcement of labor rights in the DR-CAFTA countries is insufficient to address institutional weakness and pervasive impunity. In this report WOLA defines labor law reforms needed in the six participating countries and recommends implementation methods
