Instability of two interacting, quasi-monochromatic waves in shallow water
We study the nonlinear interactions of waves with a doubled-peaked power
spectrum in shallow water. The starting point is the prototypical equation for
nonlinear uni-directional waves in shallow water, i.e. the Korteweg de Vries
equation. Using a multiple-scale technique two defocusing coupled Nonlinear
Schr\"odinger equations are derived. We show analytically that plane wave
solutions of such a system can be unstable to small perturbations. This
surprising result suggests the existence of a new energy exchange mechanism
which could influence the behaviour of ocean waves in shallow water.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure
SiPM and front-end electronics development for Cherenkov light detection
The Italian Institute of Nuclear Physics (INFN) is involved in the
development of a demonstrator for a SiPM-based camera for the Cherenkov
Telescope Array (CTA) experiment, with a pixel size of 66 mm. The
camera houses about two thousands electronics channels and is both light and
compact. In this framework, a R&D program for the development of SiPMs suitable
for Cherenkov light detection (so called NUV SiPMs) is ongoing. Different
photosensors have been produced at Fondazione Bruno Kessler (FBK), with
different micro-cell dimensions and fill factors, in different geometrical
arrangements. At the same time, INFN is developing front-end electronics based
on the waveform sampling technique optimized for the new NUV SiPM. Measurements

Silicon Photomultipliers and front-end electronics performance for Cherenkov Telescope Array camera development

In the title compound, C20H18N2O3, the β-lactam ring is essentially planar, having a maximum deviation of 0.0291 (15) Å for the N atom, and perpendicular to the phenyl ring [dihedral angle = 85.55 (11)°]. The carbonitrile side chain is almost linear, the C—C—N angle being 176.8 (2)°. The crystal packing is stabilized by intermolecular O—H⋯O and C—H⋯O interactions
Measurements and tests on FBK silicon sensors with an optimized electronic design for a CTA camera
In October 2013, the Italian Ministry approved the funding of a Research &
Development (R&D) study, within the "Progetto Premiale TElescopi CHErenkov made
in Italy (TECHE)", devoted to the development of a demonstrator for a camera
for the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) consortium. The demonstrator consists
of a sensor plane based on the Silicon Photomultiplier (SiPM) technology and on
an electronics designed for signal sampling. Preliminary tests on a matrix of
sensors produced by the Fondazione Bruno Kessler (FBK-Trento, Italy) and on
electronic prototypes produced by SITAEL S.p.A. will be presented. In
particular, we used different designs of the electronics in order to optimize
the output signals in terms of tail cancellation. This is crucial for

miRNA Signatures in Sera of Patients with Active Pulmonary Tuberculosis.
Several studies showed that assessing levels of specific circulating microRNAs (miRNAs) is a non-invasive, rapid, and accurate method for diagnosing diseases or detecting alterations in physiological conditions. We aimed to identify a serum miRNA signature to be used for the diagnosis of tuberculosis (TB). To account for variations due to the genetic makeup, we enrolled adults from two study settings in Europe and Africa. The following categories of subjects were considered: healthy (H), active pulmonary TB (PTB), active pulmonary TB, HIV co-infected (PTB/HIV), latent TB infection (LTBI), other pulmonary infections (OPI), and active extra-pulmonary TB (EPTB). Sera from 10 subjects of the same category were pooled and, after total RNA extraction, screened for miRNA levels by TaqMan low-density arrays. After identification of "relevant miRNAs", we refined the serum miRNA signature discriminating between H and PTB on individual subjects. Signatures were analyzed for their diagnostic performances using a multivariate logistic model and a Relevance Vector Machine (RVM) model. A leave-one-out-cross-validation (LOOCV) approach was adopted for assessing how both models could perform in practice. The analysis on pooled specimens identified selected miRNAs as discriminatory for the categories analyzed. On individual serum samples, we showed that 15 miRNAs serve as signature for H and PTB categories with a diagnostic accuracy of 82% (CI 70.2-90.0), and 77% (CI 64.2-85.9) in a RVM and a logistic classification model, respectively. Considering the different ethnicity, by selecting the specific signature for the European group (10 miRNAs) the diagnostic accuracy increased up to 83% (CI 68.1-92.1), and 81% (65.0-90.3), respectively. The African-specific signature (12 miRNAs) increased the diagnostic accuracy up to 95% (CI 76.4-99.1), and 100% (83.9-100.0), respectively. Serum miRNA signatures represent an interesting source of biomarkers for TB disease with the potential to discriminate between PTB and LTBI, but also among the other categories
Analyzing the potential biological determinants of autism spectrum disorder: From neuroinflammation to the kynurenine pathway
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) etiopathogenesis is still unclear and no effective preventive and treatment measures have been identified. Research has focused on the potential role of neuroinflammation and the Kynurenine pathway; here we review the nature of these interactions. Pre-natal or neonatal infections would induce microglial activation, with secondary consequences on behavior, cognition and neurotransmitter networks. Peripherally, higher levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines and anti-brain antibodies have been identified. Increased frequency of autoimmune diseases, allergies, and recurring infections have been demonstrated both in autistic patients and in their relatives. Genetic studies have also identified some important polymorphisms in chromosome loci related to the human leukocyte antigen (HLA) system. The persistence of immune-inflammatory deregulation would lead to mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative stress, creating a self-sustaining cytotoxic loop. Chronic inflammation activates the Kynurenine pathway with an increase in neurotoxic metabolites and excitotoxicity, causing long-term changes in the glutamatergic system, trophic support and synaptic function. Furthermore, overactivation of the Kynurenine branch induces depletion of melatonin and serotonin, worsening ASD symptoms. Thus, in genetically predisposed subjects, aberrant neurodevelopment may derive from a complex interplay between inflammatory processes, mitochondrial dysfunction, oxidative stress and Kynurenine pathway overexpression. To validate this hypothesis a new translational research approach is necessary
Functional Properties of Meat in Athletes’ Performance and Recovery
Physical activity (PA) and sport play an essential role in promoting body development and maintaining optimal health status both in the short and long term. Despite the benefits, a long-lasting heavy training can promote several detrimental physiological changes, including transitory immune system malfunction, increased inflammation, and oxidative stress, which manifest as exercise-induced muscle damages (EIMDs). Meat and derived products represent a very good source of bioactive molecules such as proteins, lipids, amino acids, vitamins, and minerals. Bioactive molecules represent dietary compounds that can interact with one or more components of live tissue, resulting in a wide range of possible health consequences such as immune-modulating, antihypertensive, antimicrobial, and antioxidative activities. The health benefits of meat have been well established and have been extensively reviewed elsewhere, although a growing number of studies found a significant positive effect of meat molecules on exercise performance and recovery of muscle function. Based on the limited research, meat could be an effective post-exercise food that results in favorable muscle protein synthesis and metabolic performance
