    Perceiving landscape: designing for the contemplation of material culture through time

    Near the Point at Mossel Bay on the Cape south coast is a series of sea cliff caves that contain the earliest known evidence of modern human material culture: a record of complex tool use, collection of marine resources for food and use of natural pigments for symbolling practices. This is revealed by the archaeological excavation of 'midden' deposits - piles of refuse usually situated in the back of cave dwellings left by their ancient occupants. This evidence reveals that modern humans have lived on the Cape south coast for at least 167 000 years, a time spanning global glacial and interglacial periods with associated sea level retreat and rise. During glacial phases of sea level retreat - the norm during much of human evolution - a broad continental shelf was exposed on the Cape south coast, creating a coastal plain up to 90km from the present shoreline. This now-submerged landscape, uniquely temperate, well-watered and productive during harsh glacial phases, provided sanctuary for human and other life. It is thought that this landscape was critical in establishing the course of modern human cognition. A geological study of this coastal landscape reveals its sedimentary nature, the result of repeated processes of erosion and deposition. Notions of erosion and deposition are echoed by human interaction with materials through time. Humans extract material resources from the landscape, transform them, and then deposit them, changing the landscape. The urban landscape of modern Mossel Bay consists of a palimpsest of material traces deposited through time, forming an aggregate of layers of human history. As we enter the uncertain future of climate change and sea level rise, we must be conscious of what we deposit on the landscape. This forces a re-evaluation of our material use as designers and as a society. These considerations animated the choice of the Point in Mossel Bay as the location of a landscape design intervention - a space at the intersection of sea, shoreline, cliff, quarry, cave and plain, that has developed haphazardly in the modern era. The design, which envisions a modern 'midden,' a mound of demolition waste deposited over the existing site to form the new public landscape, impels a contemplation of the layers of material that we leave behind over time, and how this defines us to future generations. A design language derived from the language of geology (erosion, deposition) and archaeology (trace, excavation) informs the design and its experience. The fill material for the midden/mound is from two sources: the zones of settlement that will be forced to retreat from the shoreline due to sea level rise anticipated in the next 50 years, and the existing materials on site that are repurposed in the design of the new landscape. The design allows people to perceive and reflect on the layers of materiality that make up the human landscape, and on the possibilities of the thoughtful use of materials that will give way to the landscapes of the future

    The CCAAT box-harboring proteins represent a family of heterotrimeric transcription factors which is highly conserved in eukaryotes. In fungi, one of the particularly important homologs of this family is the Hap complex that separates the DNA-binding domain from the activation domain and imposes essential impacts on regulation of a wide range of cellular functions. So far, a comprehensive summary of this complex has been described in filamentous fungi but not in the yeast. In this review, we summarize a number of studies related to the structure and assembly mode of the Hap complex in a list of representative yeasts. Furthermore, we emphasize recent advances in understanding the regulatory functions of this complex, with a special focus on its role in regulating respiration, production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and iron homeostasis.Fil: Nyah, Rodman.     The Gas Consumption History to z ~ 4

    Using the observations of the star formation rate and HI densities to z ~ 4, with measurements of the Molecular Gas Depletion Rate (MGDR) and local density of H_2 at z = 0, we derive the history of the gas consumption by star formation to z ~ 4. We find that closed-box models in which H_2 is not replenished by HI require improbably large increases in rho(H_2) and a decrease in the MGDR with lookback time that is inconsistent with observations. Allowing the H_2 used in star formation to be replenished by HI does not alleviate the problem because observations show that there is very little evolution of rho(HI) from z = 0 to z = 4. We show that to be consistent with observational constraints, star formation on cosmic timescales must be fueled by intergalactic ionized gas, which may come from either accretion of gas through cold (but ionized) flows or from ionized gas associated with accretion of dark matter halos. We constrain the rate at which the extraglactic ionized gas must be converted into HI and ultimately into H_2. The ionized gas inflow rate roughly traces the SFRD: about 1 - 2 x 10^8 M_sun Gyr^-1 Mpc^-3 from z ~ 1 - 4, decreasing by about an order of magnitude from z=1 to z=0 with details depending largely on MGDR(t). All models considered require the volume averaged density of rho(H_2) to increase by a factor of 1.5 - 10 to z ~ 1.5 over the currently measured value. Because the molecular gas must reside in galaxies, it implies that galaxies at high z must, on average, be more molecule rich than they are at the present epoch, which is consistent with observations. These quantitative results, derived solely from observations, agree well with cosmological simulations.Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures. Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

    This paper reports on the second Workshop of a World University Network (WUN) Research Development Funded project on “The trans-nationalization of Indigenous movements: The role of digital technologies” at the University of Southampton, UK. The workshop explored interdisciplinarity and how interdisciplinary collaboration can help scholars study complex social phenomenon, such as the ways in which marginalized Indigenous communities use and shape digital technologies (such as social media) to enhance their cause. The workshop brought together scholars from diverse disciplines to engage in a critical debate. In addition to scholars from information systems, scholars from history, political science, geography, literature, arts, and anthropology came together to discuss how marginalized Indigenous communities can use digital media. The workshop highlighted the need for more interdisciplinary research and called for more critical approaches to bring such marginalized topics to the forefront of research in information systems. We consider three broad areas of inquiry in this paper: demarginalizing methodology for interdisciplinary research, interdisciplinary perspectives for demarginalization, and interdisciplinary contexts for demarginalization

    Transforming the field: the role of academic health centers in promoting and sustaining equity based community engaged research

    Community-based participatory research (CBPR) and community engaged research (CEnR) are key to promoting community and patient engagement in actionable evidence-based strategies to improve research for health equity. Rapid growth of CBPR/CEnR research projects have led to the broad adoption of partnering principles in community-academic partnerships and among some health and academic organizations. Yet, transformation of principles into best practices that foster trust, shared power, and equity outcomes still remain fragmented, are dependent on individuals with long term projects, or are non-existent. This paper describes how we designed our Engage for Equity PLUS intervention that leverages the leadership and membership of champion teams (including community-engaged faculty, community partners and patient advocates) to improve organizational policies and practices to support equity based CBPR/CEnR

    Test of an interprofessional collaborative practice model to improve obesity-related health outcomes in Michigan

    The purpose of the study was to test the effectiveness of an interprofessional collaborative practice (IPCP) education program on clinicians\u27 and students\u27 knowledge and attitudes toward IPCP and to determine the effectiveness of an IPCP weight loss program in two nurse-managed centers. The study team used the Midwest Interprofessional Practice, Education, and Research Center (MIPERC) collaborative practice education program that consists of online learning modules followed by daily huddles and collaborative care planning. The obesity intervention program was implemented by faculty and staff practitioners and students in two clinics with very different patient populations (community residents and college students). Staff/faculty practitioners and students demonstrated statistically significant knowledge gains as a result of online learning modules (Introduction to IPE p \u3c .05; Motivational Interviewing p \u3c .001; Safety Behaviors p \u3c .001; Team Dynamics p \u3c .001). Small, but not statistically significant changes in attitudes toward IPCP were seen with both groups. At program completion, enrolled patients showed statistical significant (p \u3c .001) weight losses and decreases in body mass indices. Other health outcomes showed no significant changes (blood pressure, prevalence of smoking, exercise frequency or duration p \u3e .05). The study demonstrated the potential of an IPCP program to affect weight loss in two populations

    Giving Voice to the Voiceless: The Use of Digital Technologies by Marginalized Groups

    This paper reports on a workshop hosted at the University of Massachusetts Amherst in September, 2018. The workshop, called “Giving Voice to the Voiceless: The Use of Digital Technologies by Marginalized Groups”, focused on discussing how marginalized groups use digital technologies to raise their voices. At the workshop, a diverse group of scholars and doctoral students presented research projects and perspectives on the role that digital technologies have in activist projects that represent marginalized groups that have gained momentum in the last few years. The studies and viewpoints presented shed light on four areas in which IS research can expand our understanding about how marginalized groups use digital technologies to address societal challenges: 1) the rise of cyberactivism, 2) resource mobilization for cyberactivism, 3) cyberactivism by and with marginalized groups, and 4) research methods for examining how marginalized groups use digital technologies

    A Comparison of iCare and Goldmann Applanation Tonometry Measurements During the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Retrospective Study

    PURPOSE: To evaluate factors associated with differences in intraocular pressure (IOP) readings between iCare and Goldmann applanation tonometry (GAT) in established glaucoma patients. METHODS: This retrospective comparative study included clinical data of 350 eyes from 350 established glaucoma patients who had iCare and GAT IOP measured by an ophthalmic technician and a glaucoma specialist, respectively. The main outcome measure was the difference in IOP measurements of the right eyes with iCare and GAT. RESULTS: The intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) between GAT and iCare was 0.90. The mean IOP difference between tonometers was - 0.18 ± 2.89 mmHg. Bland-Altman plots indicated a 95% limit of agreement of - 5.8 to 5.5 mmHg. Central corneal thickness (CCT) and age were significantly correlated with the difference in IOPs of the iCare and GAT. GAT-IOP and age were significantly associated with the absolute difference in measured IOP of the two tonometers. The difference in measurements was not significantly associated with prior glaucoma surgery, average global index of optical coherence tomography, axial length, technician years of experience and certification, and IOP range. CONCLUSION: Although there is good agreement between the iCare and GAT mean values, these devices are not interchangeable in glaucoma patients due to the wide range of the limit of agreement
