    Co-productive agility and four collaborative pathways to sustainability transformations

    Co-production, the collaborative weaving of research and practice by diverse societal actors, is argued to play an important role in sustainability transformations. Yet, there is still poor understanding of how to navigate the tensions that emerge in these processes. Through analyzing 32 initiatives worldwide that co-produced knowledge and action to foster sustainable social-ecological relations, we conceptualize ‘co-productive agility’ as an emergent feature vital for turning tensions into transformations. Co-productive agility refers to the willingness and ability of diverse actors to iteratively engage in reflexive dialogues to grow shared ideas and actions that would not have been possible from the outset. It relies on embedding knowledge production within processes of change to constantly recognize, reposition, and navigate tensions and opportunities. Co-productive agility opens up multiple pathways to transformation through: (1) elevating marginalized agendas in ways that maintain their integrity and broaden struggles for justice; (2) questioning dominant agendas by engaging with power in ways that challenge assumptions, (3) navigating conflicting agendas to actively transform interlinked paradigms, practices, and structures; (4) exploring diverse agendas to foster learning and mutual respect for a plurality of perspectives. We explore six process considerations that vary by these four pathways and provide a framework to enable agility in sustainability transformations. We argue that research and practice spend too much time closing down debate over different agendas for change – thereby avoiding, suppressing, or polarizing tensions, and call for more efforts to facilitate better interactions among different agendas

    Pattern of methionine adenosyltransferase isoenzyme expression during rat liver regeneration after partial hepatectomy

    The present report investigates the pattern of expression of liver- specific and extrahepatic methionine adenosyltransferase (MAT) isoenzymes in regenerating rat liver after partial hepatectomy. The results show that there is a switch in the expression of these isoenzymes that is coincident with maximal cell proliferation in the remaining liver lobes. Extrahepatic MAT levels increase about three times 4 h after hepatectomy, reaching a maximum 36 h later. This is accompanied by a rapid and transient increase in total MAT activity and levels of related metabolites S-adenosyl-L-methionine and S- adenosyl-L-homocysteine. Liver-specific MAT levels are reversibly down- regulated within 24-48 h post surgery. Our results indicate that MAT isoenzyme expression is tightly regulated during liver regeneration after two-third hepatectomy.     Modernization plans for the Mexican customs system : have they really worked? A productivity impact assessment

    Efficiency measurement of customs offices is a nascent but growing area of research interest. In this study we examined whether the Mexican government's policies enacted during the 2011-2017 period improved the efficiency of the customs system. Our empirical approach employed a standard metafrontier model to assess the efficiency of all customs offices in Mexico. We examined changes in the best-practice performance, productivity, and technology leadership for three groups of customs offices (border, interior, and maritime) by conducting static and temporal analyses. The static analysis showed that border customs had the most within-group variations. The internal customs group exhibited constant efficiency, whereas the maritime customs group was nearest to the metafrontier. The temporal analysis indicated that border customs offices were the most productive group during the period; however, this group was distant from the metafrontier. Our findings contribute to the growing literature on customs efficiency measurement

    Effects of prolonged ethanol intake and malnutrition on rat pancreas

    Nutritional factors, especially the protein and fat content of the diet, may change pancreatic morphology after ethanol induced injury. This study was performed to delineate the combined effects of a low fat diet and longterm ethanol ingestion on the rat pancreas. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were maintained with five different diets for 12 weeks and the pancreas removed on the day they were killed. Rats fed a very low fat diet without ethanol (5% of total calories as lipid) developed malnutrition, pancreatic steatosis, and reduction in zymogen granules content. Animals fed a 35% lipid diet with ethanol also developed pancreatic steatosis but changes in zymogen granules content were not detected. Both malnutrition and longterm ethanol consumption increased pancreatic cholesterol ester content, and their effects were additive. Pancreatic steatosis was accompanied with hypercholesterolaemia. Amylase, lipase, and cholesterol esterase content were reduced in malnourished rats; but longterm ethanol ingestion, regardless of the nutritional state, increased lipase content and decreased amylase. It is suggested that high serum cholesterol concentrations and increased pancreatic lipase activity could cause accumulation of cholesterol esters in acinar cells. Fat accumulation in the pancreas has been reported as the earliest histopathological feature in alcoholic patients and may be responsible for cytotoxic effects on the acinar cells at the level of the cell membrane. Although it is difficult to extrapolate results in this animal study to the human situation, the results presented in this work might explain the higher incidence of pancreatitis is malnourished populations as well as in alcoholic subjects that is reported in dietary surveys
