Static magnetic order of Sr4_{4}A2_{2}O6_{6}Fe2_{2}As2_{2} (A = Sc and V) revealed by local probes

Static magnetic order of quasi two-dimensional FeAs compounds Sr4A2O6-xFe2As2, with A = Sc and V, has been detected by 57Fe Moessbauer and muon spin relaxation ({\mu}SR) spectroscopies. The non-superconducting stoichiometric (x = 0) A = Sc system exhibits a static internal/hyperfine magnetic field both at the 57Fe and {\mu}+ sites, indicating antiferromagnetic order of Fe moments below TN = 35 K with ~ 0.1 Bohr magneton per Fe at T = 2 K. The superconducting and oxygen deficient (x = 0.4) A = V system exhibits a static internal field only at the {\mu}+ site below TN ~ 40 K, indicating static magnetic order of V moments co-existing with superconductivity without freezing of Fe moments. These results suggest that the 42622 FeAs systems belong to the same paradigm with the 1111 and 122 FeAs systems with respect to magnetic behavior of Fe moments.Comment: 4 pages 4 figures: for information, contact [email protected]

Compositional disorder and its influence on the structural, electronic and magnetic properties of MgC(Ni_{1-x}Co_{x})_{3} alloys using first-principles

First-principles, density-functional based electronic structure calculations are carried out for MgC(Ni_{1-x}Co_{x})_{3} alloys over the concentration range 0\leq x\leq1, using Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker coherent-potential approximation (KKR CPA) method in the atomic sphere approximation (ASA). The self-consistent calculations are used to study the changes as a function of x in the equation of state parameters, total and partial densities of states, magnetic moment and the on-site exchange interaction parameter. To study the magnetic properties as well as its volume dependence, fixed-spin moment calculations in conjunction with the phenomenological Landau theory are employed. The salient features that emerge from these calculations are (i) a concentration independent variation in the lattice parameter and bulk modulus at x~0.75 with an anomaly in the variation of the pressure derivative of bulk modulus, (ii) the fixed-spin moment based corrections to the overestimated magnetic ground state for 0.0\leq x\leq0.3 alloys, making the results consistent with the experiments, and (iii) the possibility of multiple magnetic states at x~0.75, which, however, requires further improvements in the calculations

Synthesis of Poly[(3-(6-(9-anthracenylmethoxy)hexyl)thiophene)-co-(3-(6-bromohexyl)thiophene)] Postfunctionalized from Poly(3-(6-bromohexyl)thiophene): A Comparative Study of the Base Polymer with Its Chlorinated Analogous

A synthetic method based on the postfunctionalization of a reactive homopolymer precursor, which allows for the preparation of different copolymers derived from poly(3-alkylthiophene), was studied. Although these groups decrease the solubility of the resultant material, they enable controlling the degree of substitution to obtain a material with improved spectroscopic (absorption and emission) properties making them useful for the fabrication of electronic devices, for example, solar cells and light-emitting diodes. Furthermore, a comparative study of two halogenated (Cl and Br) reactive poly(3-ω-haloalkyl)thiophenes was carried out

The crystal structure of the hulsite has two planar substructures formed by Ni and Sn atoms: one with rectangular configuration and the other with a triangular arrangement. These substructures are linked by the boron ions and by Ni in another site closer to the rectangular arrangement, resulting in a quasi-two-dimensional character. Thus, this system literally adds a new dimension to the study of oxyborates. Our results point to a complex magnetic behavior consistent with these substructures. The planes with rectangular arrangement form a complex magnetic ordering at 180 K (one of the highest magnetic transitions among the oxyborates). The other subsystem, formed by Ni atoms located in a two-dimensional triangular lattice, does not order down to temperatures as low as 3 K. The experimental results suggest a spin-liquid behavior for this subsystem. The magnetic moments of the ions between these planes also freeze at low temperatures. The two magnetic planes coexist as independent subsystems down to the lowest temperatures of our experiments.985110CNPQ - CONSELHO NACIONAL DE DESENVOLVIMENTO CIENTÍFICO E TECNOLÓGICOFAPERJ - FUNDAÇÃO DE AMPARO À PESQUISA DO ESTADO DO RIO DE JANEIROFAPESP - FUNDAÇÃO DE AMPARO À PESQUISA DO ESTADO DE SÃO PAULOCNPQ - CONSELHO NACIONAL DE DESENVOLVIMENTO CIENTÍFICO E TECNOLÓGICOFAPERJ - FUNDAÇÃO DE AMPARO À PESQUISA DO ESTADO DO RIO DE JANEIROFAPESP - FUNDAÇÃO DE AMPARO À PESQUISA DO ESTADO DE SÃO PAUL

Prediction of pH Change in Processed Acidified Turnips

    Get PDF
The acetic acid uptake by turnips was studied during an acidification process in containers. The process was successfully described by a Fickian diffusion, using a correlation for the buffer effect. Diffusion coefficients (0.629 to 3.99 × 10-9 m2/sec) and partition coefficients (0.8 to 1.1) were obtained by optimization of the fit between experimental and theoretical values, using the simplex method. The partition coefficient did not show an evident dependence on temperature, while diffusivity followed an Arrhenius type behavior. The relationship between acid concentration and pH was described using a cubic model with parameters independent of temperature. Results showed that the combination of these models describing the acid diffusion into the food and the buffering effects of the food allowed accurate prediction of pH evolution in the acidification process

Child-Custody Reform and Marriage-Specific Investment in Children

Research on child custody primarily focuses on the well-being of children following divorce. We extend this literature by examining how the prospect of joint child custody affects marriage-specific investment in children’s private-school education. Variation in the timing of joint-custody reforms across states proxies for the prospect of joint child custody and provides a natural experiment framework with which to examine marriage-specific investment in children. The probability of children’s private school attendance declines by 13 percent in states that adopt joint-custody laws. The effects of joint-custody reform are larger in states that have property-division laws that consistently favor one parent over the other. The results are largely robust for subsamples partitioned by socioeconomic status

Abstract

Background

The early diagnosis of atherosclerotic disease is essential for developing preventive strategies in populations at high risk and acting when the disease is still asymptomatic. A low ankle-arm index is a good marker of vascular events and may be diminished without presenting symptomatology (silent peripheral arterial disease). The aim of the study is to know the prevalence and associated risk factors of peripheral arterial disease in the general population.

Methods

We performed a cross-sectional, multicentre, population-based study in 3786 individuals >49 years, randomly selected in 28 primary care centres in Barcelona (Spain). Peripheral arterial disease was evaluated using the ankle-arm index. Values < 0.9 were considered as peripheral arterial disease.

Results

The prevalence (95% confidence interval) of peripheral arterial disease was 7.6% (6.7-8.4), (males 10.2% (9.2-11.2), females 5.3% (4.6-6.0); <it>p </it>< 0.001).

Multivariate analysis showed the following risk factors: male sex [odds ratio (OR) 1.62; 95% confidence interval 1.01-2.59]; age OR 2.00 per 10 years (1.64-2.44); inability to perform physical activity [OR 1.77 (1.17-2.68) for mild limitation to OR 7.08 (2.61-19.16) for breathless performing any activity]; smoking [OR 2.19 (1.34-3.58) for former smokers and OR 3.83 (2.23-6.58) for current smokers]; hypertension OR 1.85 (1.29-2.65); diabetes OR 2.01 (1.42-2.83); previous cardiovascular disease OR 2.19 (1.52-3.15); hypercholesterolemia OR 1.55 (1.11-2.18); hypertriglyceridemia OR 1.55 (1.10-2.19). Body mass index ≥25 Kg/m2 OR 0.57 (0.38-0.87) and walking >7 hours/week OR 0.67 (0.49-0.94) were found as protector factors.

Conclusions

The prevalence of peripheral arterial disease is low, higher in males and increases with age in both sexes. In addition to previously described risk factors we found a protector effect in physical exercise and overweight.</p
