A Critical Discourse Analysis of the University of Ottawa’s Internationalization Strategy Report from a Third World perspective

    Get PDF
This paper analyzes the Internationalization Strategy of the University of Ottawa according to the Third World Approach to International Law (TWAIL) methodology. It argues that the Strategy silences global unevenness, avoids any pedagogical discussion and reproduces the neoliberal rationality about globalization. Also, the liberal multiculturalism evoked in the Strategy hinders the incorporation of marginal cultural narratives and it is driven by the promotion of economic assets for the university. As the internationalization of the curriculum is not prioritized, it does not consider the reproduction of developed countries’ academic canons and the obstacles to the incorporation of knowledge produced in Third World countries, indicating no concerns with the prevalence of a neocolonial bias. Alternatives to balance this situation are offered, such as administrative recommendations, the strengthening of the public debate, and the attention to diversity as a criterion for research funding

    Get PDF
ABSTRACT: In the scope of Applied Linguistics, the research that defends and investigates the close relationship between language and society, that is, studies belonging to the scientific field of Sociolinguistic Variationist, which theorize and prove methodologically that social factors directly interfere in the processes of variation and change in the structures of the tongue. Moreover, the importance of this field of Applied Linguistics is due to the fact that it provides the talking subjects with a greater ability to reflect on the language they use, realizing it as a dynamic, concrete and heterogeneous system. Given this relevance of The Variationist Sociolinguistics, this article aims to describe and reflect on its theoretical-methodological model. It was concluded that the methodology in Sociolinguistic Variationist has, above all, its own bias, due to the procedural steps being highly directed. Despite this peculiar character, it is possible to identify methodological traits of ethnography in sociolinguistic research, punctually in those performed in speech communities and more effectively in those who choose to do research in communities of practice. This work evaluated physical-chemical properties of spraying syrup formulated with different water types and using or not tank-mixing pesticides. The experimental design was completely randomized in a 4 x 5 factorial scheme (4 water types and 4 pesticide syrups + control, non-sprayed plant) in three sampling times (off-season corn, pre-planting soybean weed control, and soybean season) within one year. Water treatments consisted of deionized, well, river and weir water. Product mixing consisted of herbicide (Glyphosate 925 g a.i. ha-1), herbicide + insecticide (Imidacloprid + beta-cyfluthrin 100+12.5 g a.i. ha-1), herbicide + fungicide (Trifloxystrobin + Prothioconazole 70+60 g a.i. ha-1) and herbicide + insecticide + fungicide. Weir water presented the worst physical quality. Spraying syrup prepared with tank-mixing herbicide, insecticide, and fungicide in various combinations decreased the effectiveness of the pesticide. When associating the three pesticides, less dissolution of the spray syrup and greater risk of syrup incompatibility leads to pesticide ineffectiveness. Highlights: The water type used in tank-mixing multiple pesticides affects spraying syrup quality. Water with the worst physical quality decreases pesticide performance. Less dissolution and greater risk of fungicide ineffectiveness take place when three pesticides are associated. Spraying syrup prepared with tank-mixing pesticides increased in the successive cultivation of soybean/corn.This work evaluated physical-chemical properties of spraying syrup formulated with different water types and using or not tank-mixing pesticides. Get PDF
The article identifies how Research and Development (R&D) collaborations in startups can influence digital innovation in Brazilian manufactures. A qualitative multiple case study was performed with startups incubated at the Federation of Industries of Paraná (FIEP), through semi-structured interviews to the Chief Executive Officer (CEOs) and case document’s, applying the content analysis. The results indicate that the sources of knowledge of the startups and the collaboration with companies, universities, government development agencies and incubators, characterize the actions in the ecosystem of open innovation. It has been found that the complexity of the innovation ecosystem of startups is a strategic asset, and the nature of the collaborations is informal, coupled with a stage of maturity considered low in startups. This study contributes to highlight the nature, dynamics and progress of startup collaborations in the development of digital transformation, and the challenges for the leverage of Industry 4.0 in Brazil

Serious games assisted by playware as a way to improve socio-emotional skills in children with autism spectrum disorder

This paper presents a project developed with the aim of promoting emotional skills in children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). The project involves a serious game and a playware object, which is a physical component that allows the user to interactively play the serious game. The playware object has six buttons, each one showing an emoji with a specific facial expression and communicates via Bluetooth with the serious game app installed in an Android device. The facial expressions used are: happiness, sadness, fear, anger, surprise and neutral/normal. They were applied to the three game activities (imitation, recognition and storytelling). The chain of tests started with an online questionnaire to validate the avatars created to represent the previously mentioned facial expressions in the game, which was followed by a usability test of the application (serious game and playware object) with six typically developing children. Finally, the three game activities were tested with six children with ASD in three/four sessions. Due to the small test group and reduced number of sessions, the primary objective was to assess if the target group accepted the application. In fact, it had a high level of approval regarding both the serious game and the playware object. had a high level of approval regarding both the serious game and the playware object.COMPETE: POCI-01-0145-FEDER-007043 and FCT –Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia within the Project Scope: UID/CEC/00319/2013.
