    Effect of glazing application side and mechanical cycling on the biaxial flexural strength and Weibull characteristics of a Y-TZP ceramic

    Glaze application on monolithic zirconia (Y-TZP) can be a practical approach to improve the mechanical properties of this material. Objective: Our study evaluated the effect of glazing side and mechanical cycling on the biaxial flexure strength (BFS) of a Y-TZP. Methodology: Eighty sintered Y-TZP discs (Ø:12 mm; thickness: 1.2 mm - ISO 6872) were produced and randomly assigned into eight groups (n=10), according to the factors “glazing side” (control – no glazing; GT – glaze on tensile side; GC – glaze on compression side; GTC – glaze on both sides) and “mechanical aging” (non-aged and aged, A – mechanical cycling: 1.2×106, 84 N, 3 Hz, under water at 37°C). Specimens were subjected to BFS test (1 mm/min; 1,000 Kgf load cell) and fractured surfaces were analyzed by stereomicroscopy and SEM. Hsueh’s rigorous solutions were used to estimate the stress at failure of glazed specimens. Two-way ANOVA, Tukey’s test (5%), and Weibull analysis were performed. Results: The “glazing side”, “mechanical aging” and the interaction of the factors were significant (p<0.05). Groups GC (1157.9±146.9 MPa), GT (1156.1±195.3 MPa), GTC (986.0±187.4 MPa) and GTC-A (1131.9±128.9 MPa) presented higher BFS than control groups (Tukey, 5%). Hsueh’s rigorous solutions showed that the maximum tensile stress was presented in the bottom of zirconia layer, at the zirconia/glaze interface. Weibull characteristic strength (σo) of the GC was higher than all groups (p<0.05), except to GT, GTC-A and GTC, which were similar among them. The fractography showed initiation of failures from zirconia the tensile side regardless of the side of glaze application and fatigue. Conclusion: Glazing zirconia applied on both tensile and compression sides improves the flexural strength of Y-TZP, regardless the mechanical aging

    AVALIAÇÃO DOS COMPOSTOS BIOATIVOS E ESTUDO DO COMPORTAMENTO REOLÓGICO DE GELEIAS DE MORANGO ADICIONADAS DE INGREDIENTES FUNCIONAIS

    Foram elaboradas diferentes formulações de geleia de morango adicionadas de farinhas com alegações funcionais, sendo utilizado 5% de farinha de linhaça, amaranto, goji berry ou berinjela. As formulações foram submetidas a análises de pH, sólidos solúveis, acidez total titulável, teor de antocianinas e flavonóides amarelos, teores equivalentes de β-caroteno e licopeno, teor de polifenóis extraíveis torais e atividade antioxidante total. Foi determinada a composição centesimal de cada amostra, onde foram avaliados os teores de lipídeos, proteínas, carboidratos, cinzas e umidade. As amostras também foram submetidas ao estudo do comportamento reológico, seguindo os modelos de Ostwald-de-Waelle (Lei da potencia), Herschel Bulkley, Casson e Newton. Todos os resultados obtidos foram avaliados estatisticamente através de analise de regressão linear (analises reológicas) e analise de variância e teste de Tukey (p < 0,05), para as demais analises efetuadas. As geleias elaboradas nestes estudo apresentaram características semelhantes em relação ao pH, atividade de agua, acidez total titulavel e teor de sólidos solúveis totais. Em relação aos compostos bioativos, as formulações adicionadas de farinha de goji berry apresentaram maiores teores de licopeno e polifenois extraíveis totais. Para a composição centesimal, não houveram grandes diferenças quanto aos teores de umidade, glicídios e valor energético total. A adição de farinha de berinjela não pareceu modificar as características reológicas da geleia de morango. Para as geleias contendo as demais farinhas, verificou-se um aumento nos valores dos parâmetros reológicos, quando comparado a geleia controle, resultando em diferenças na consistência do produto. A elaboração de geleia de morango contendo farinha de goji berry apresenta-se como uma alternativa viável na elaboração de um novo produto com propriedades funcionais, tendo em vista as propriedades benéficas da farinha, aliadas aos compostos bioativos ja presentes no morango.

    AUTOIMAGEM DA MULHER MASTECTOMIZADA: IMPACTOS E REPERCUSSÕES ADVINDOS DO CÂNCER DE MAMA

    Introduction: Self-image is defined as the way an individual perceives and feels about their own body. In addition, it is related to the concepts of ‘image’ and ‘body’, whose interpretation goes beyond language and encompasses a broader dimension by taking into account the uniqueness of each being. Objective: To promote reflection on the proposed theme. Methodology: This is a descriptive bibliographic review with a qualitative approach, analyzing scientific literature that refers us to the research object. The bibliographic research is based on already published material with the aim of analyzing different positions on a given subject. Analysis and discussion of results: The Enimar de Paula1; recommended care for mastectomized women are: avoiding sun exposure; not pressing on the side of the operated limb; being careful not to suffer burns, scratches and cuts; not receiving injections, vaccines or blood extraction on the upper limb homolateral to surgery; avoiding cuticle removal; not carrying weight; exercising upper limbs; among others. Conclusion: The nurse also has the duty to follow up on health education activities, which aim to provide information related to necessary care after mastectomy, which assists women in the recovery process.Introdução: A autoimagem é definida como a maneira pela qual um indivíduo se percebe e se sente em relação ao seu próprio corpo. Dentre os cuidados recomendados às mulheres mastectomizadas, estão: evitar a exposição ao sol; não pressionar o lado do membro operado; ter cuidado para não sofrer queimaduras, arranhões e cortes; não receber injeções, vacinas ou extrair sangue no membro superior homolateral à cirurgia; evitar remover cutícula; não carregar peso; exercitar os membros superiores; entre outros Conclusão: O enfermeiro também tem o dever de acompanhar as atividades educativas em saúde, que objetivam fornecer informações relacionadas aos cuidados necessários após a mastectomia, que auxiliam a mulher no processo de recuperação

    Influence of abrasive dentifrices on polymeric reconstructive material properties after simulated toothbrushing

    AbstractTo assess the influence of dentifrices with different abrasiveness levels on the properties of dental reconstructive materials. Forty-eight cylinders were obtained from four polymeric materials, being two CAD/CAM acrylic resins (Ivotion-Dent and Ivotion-Base), one injected acrylic resin (IvoBase-Hydrid) and one light-cured resin composite (Empress Direct). Specimens were allocated to four subgroups for toothbrushing simulation according to the dentifrice relative dentin abrasivity (RDA) and silica content: (i) RDA 0 = 0%; (ii) RDA 50 = 3%; (iii) RDA 100 = 10%; and (iv) RDA 120 = 25%. Specimens were then subjected to toothbrushing. Surface analyses [surface roughness Ra (SR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM)] along with hardness and optical properties [translucency parameter (TP) and contrast ratio (CR)] were evaluated before and after toothbrushing. Statistical analyses were performed using ANOVA and Tukey test. A significant increase in SR was observed after toothbrushing with higher RDA toothpastes for Ivotion-Dent (100 and 120) and IvoBase-Hybrid (120). Ivotion-Base and Empress Direct presented no significant differences in SR when analyzed as a function of timepoint and RDA levels. Hardness was not influenced by toothbrushing with different RDA dentifrices, except for Empress Direct with RDA 0 toothpaste, where a decrease in the hardness was observed. TP of Ivotion-Dent and Empress Direct significantly decreased after toothbrushing with higher RDA dentifrices and CR of Ivotion-Dent, Empress Direct and IvoBase-Hybrid significantly increased with higher RDA dentifrices. The levels of dentifrice abrasiveness affected differently the SR, hardness and optical properties of polymeric reconstructive materials after toothbrushing

    Indirect effects of habitat loss via habitat fragmentation: A cross-taxa analysis of forest-dependent species

    Recent studies suggest that habitat amount is the main determinant of species richness, whereas habitat fragmentation has weak and mostly positive effects. Here, we challenge these ideas using a multi-taxa database including 2230 estimates of forest-dependent species richness from 1097 sampling sites across the Brazilian Atlantic Forest biodiversity hotspot. We used a structural equation modeling approach, accounting not only for direct effects of habitat loss, but also for its indirect effects (via habitat fragmentation), on the richness of forest-dependent species. We reveal that in addition to the effects of habitat loss, habitat fragmentation has negative impacts on animal species richness at intermediate (30–60%) levels of habitat amount, and on richness of plants at high (>60%) levels of habitat amount, both of which are mediated by edge effects. Based on these results, we argue that dismissing habitat fragmentation as a powerful force driving species extinction in tropical forest landscapes is premature and unsafe

    NEOTROPICAL CARNIVORES: a data set on carnivore distribution in the Neotropics

    Mammalian carnivores are considered a key group in maintaining ecological health and can indicate potential ecological integrity in landscapes where they occur. Carnivores also hold high conservation value and their habitat requirements can guide management and conservation plans. The order Carnivora has 84 species from 8 families in the Neotropical region: Canidae; Felidae; Mephitidae; Mustelidae; Otariidae; Phocidae; Procyonidae; and Ursidae. Herein, we include published and unpublished data on native terrestrial Neotropical carnivores (Canidae; Felidae; Mephitidae; Mustelidae; Procyonidae; and Ursidae). NEOTROPICAL CARNIVORES is a publicly available data set that includes 99,605 data entries from 35,511 unique georeferenced coordinates. Detection/non-detection and quantitative data were obtained from 1818 to 2018 by researchers, governmental agencies, non-governmental organizations, and private consultants. Data were collected using several methods including camera trapping, museum collections, roadkill, line transect, and opportunistic records. Literature (peer-reviewed and grey literature) from Portuguese, Spanish and English were incorporated in this compilation. Most of the data set consists of detection data entries (n = 79,343; 79.7%) but also includes non-detection data (n = 20,262; 20.3%). Of those, 43.3% also include count data (n = 43,151). The information available in NEOTROPICAL CARNIVORES will contribute to macroecological, ecological, and conservation questions in multiple spatio-temporal perspectives. As carnivores play key roles in trophic interactions, a better understanding of their distribution and habitat requirements are essential to establish conservation management plans and safeguard the future ecological health of Neotropical ecosystems. Our data paper, combined with other large-scale data sets, has great potential to clarify species distribution and related ecological processes within the Neotropics. There are no copyright restrictions and no restriction for using data from this data paper, as long as the data paper is cited as the source of the information used. We also request that users inform us of how they intend to use the data

    Brazilian Flora 2020: Leveraging the power of a collaborative scientific network

    International audienceThe shortage of reliable primary taxonomic data limits the description of biological taxa and the understanding of biodiversity patterns and processes, complicating biogeographical, ecological, and evolutionary studies. This deficit creates a significant taxonomic impediment to biodiversity research and conservation planning. The taxonomic impediment and the biodiversity crisis are widely recognized, highlighting the urgent need for reliable taxonomic data. Over the past decade, numerous countries worldwide have devoted considerable effort to Target 1 of the Global Strategy for Plant Conservation (GSPC), which called for the preparation of a working list of all known plant species by 2010 and an online world Flora by 2020. Brazil is a megadiverse country, home to more of the world's known plant species than any other country. Despite that, Flora Brasiliensis, concluded in 1906, was the last comprehensive treatment of the Brazilian flora. The lack of accurate estimates of the number of species of algae, fungi, and plants occurring in Brazil contributes to the prevailing taxonomic impediment and delays progress towards the GSPC targets. Over the past 12 years, a legion of taxonomists motivated to meet Target 1 of the GSPC, worked together to gather and integrate knowledge on the algal, plant, and fungal diversity of Brazil. Overall, a team of about 980 taxonomists joined efforts in a highly collaborative project that used cybertaxonomy to prepare an updated Flora of Brazil, showing the power of scientific collaboration to reach ambitious goals. This paper presents an overview of the Brazilian Flora 2020 and provides taxonomic and spatial updates on the algae, fungi, and plants found in one of the world's most biodiverse countries. We further identify collection gaps and summarize future goals that extend beyond 2020. Our results show that Brazil is home to 46,975 native species of algae, fungi, and plants, of which 19,669 are endemic to the country. The data compiled to date suggests that the Atlantic Rainforest might be the most diverse Brazilian domain for all plant groups except gymnosperms, which are most diverse in the Amazon. However, scientific knowledge of Brazilian diversity is still unequally distributed, with the Atlantic Rainforest and the Cerrado being the most intensively sampled and studied biomes in the country. In times of “scientific reductionism”, with botanical and mycological sciences suffering pervasive depreciation in recent decades, the first online Flora of Brazil 2020 significantly enhanced the quality and quantity of taxonomic data available for algae, fungi, and plants from Brazil. This project also made all the information freely available online, providing a firm foundation for future research and for the management, conservation, and sustainable use of the Brazilian funga and flora
