    Enhancing the heavy Higgs signal with jet-jet profile cuts

    The jet-jet profile, or detailed manner, in which transverse energy and mass are distributed around the jet-jet system resulting from the hadronic decay of a ZZ boson in the process HiggsZZ\to ZZ at a proton-proton collider energy of 40\tev is carefully examined. Two observables are defined that can be used to help distinguish the +\ell^+\ell^--jet-jet signal from Higgs decay from the ``ordinary'' QCD background arising from the large transverse momentum production of single ZZ bosons plus the associated jets. By making cuts on these observables, signal to background enhancement factors greater than 100100 can be obtained.Comment: 16 pages, Univ. Florida IFT-93-

    Talking with Teachers, Administrators, and Parents: Preferences for Visual Displays of Education Data

    The purpose of this study was to learn from educational stakeholders what characteristics they like and dislike when viewing graphs of post-school outcomes data. We conducted six, 1-hour focus groups with teachers, administrators, and parents in which we distributed four stimuli graphs—horizontal grouped bars, horizontal stacked bars, vertical stacked columns, and vertical grouped columns – to solicit participants’ preferences for data displayed graphically. Our findings indicate that multiple factors contributed to participants’ stated preferences for one graphic display over another. These factors include ease of understanding information displayed in the graph, familiarity with the display, comfort, as well as speed and habit for administrators. We discuss implications for practitioners, identify areas for further research, and recommend considerations when designing graphs for educational stakeholders

    A GLOBAL QCD STUDY OF DIRECT PHOTON PRODUCTION

    A global QCD analysis of the direct photon production process from both fixed target and collider experiments is presented. These data sets now completely cover the parton xx range from 0.01 to 0.6, thereby providing a stringent test of perturbative QCD and parton distributions. Previous detailed studies of direct photons emphasized fixed target data. We find most data sets have a steeper ptp_t distribution than the QCD prediction. Neither global fits with new parton distributions nor improved photon fragmentation functions can resolve this problem since the deviation occurs at different xx values for experiments at different energies. A more likely explanation is the need for additional broadening of the ktk_t of the initial state partons.     Global QCD Analysis and the CTEQ Parton Distributions

    The CTEQ program for the determination of parton distributions through a global QCD analysis of data for various hard scattering processes is fully described. A new set of distributions, CTEQ3, incorporating several new types of data is reported and compared to the two previous sets of CTEQ distributions. Comparison with current data is discussed in some detail. The remaining uncertainties in the parton distributions and methods to further reduce them are assessed.     Black Stork Down: Military Discourses in Bird Conservation in Malta

    Tensions between Maltese hunters and bird conservation NGOs have intensified over the past decade. Conservation NGOs have become frustrated with the Maltese State for conceding to the hunter lobby and negotiating derogations from the European Union’s Bird Directive. Some NGOs have recently started to organize complex field-operations where volunteers are trained to patrol the landscape, operate drones and other surveillance technologies, detect illegalities, and lead police teams to arrest poachers. We describe the sophisticated military metaphors which conservation NGOs have developed to describe, guide and legitimize their efforts to the Maltese public and their fee-paying members. We also discuss why such groups might be inclined to adopt these metaphors. Finally, we suggest that anthropological studies of discourse could help understand delicate contexts such as this where conservation NGOs, hunting associations and the State have ended in political deadlock

    Origin of the kTk_T smearing in direct photon production

    We show that the Sudakov factor from the resummation of double logarithms ln(s/kT2)\ln(s/k_T^2) contained in the distribution functions is responsible for the kTk_T smearing mechanism employed in the next-to-leading-order QCD (ααs2\alpha\alpha_s^2) calculations of direct photon production. ss is the center-of-mass energy, and kTk_T the transverse momentum carried by a parton in a colliding hadron. This factor exhibits the appropriate ss-dependent Gaussian width in kTk_T, such that our predictions are in good agreement with experimental data.Comment: 12 pages, latex, 6 figure

    Evidence against Equimolarity of Large Repeat Arrangements and a Predominant Master Circle Structure of the Mitochondrial Genome from a Monkeyflower (Mimulus guttatus) Lineage with Cryptic CMS

    Despite intense investigation for over 25 years, the in vivo structure of plant mitochondrial genomes remains uncertain. Mapping studies and genome sequencing generally produce large circular chromosomes, whereas electrophoretic and microscopic studies typically reveal linear and multibranched molecules. To more fully assess the structure of plant mitochondrial genomes, the complete sequence of the monkeyflower (Mimulus guttatus DC. line IM62) mitochondrial DNA was constructed from a large (35 kb) paired-end shotgun sequencing library to a high depth of coverage (∼30×). The complete genome maps as a 525,671 bp circular molecule and exhibits a fairly conventional set of features including 62 genes (encoding 35 proteins, 24 transfer RNAs, and 3 ribosomal RNAs), 22 introns, 3 large repeats (2.7, 9.6, and 29 kb), and 96 small repeats (40–293 bp). Most paired-end reads (71%) mapped to the consensus sequence at the expected distance and orientation across the entire genome, validating the accuracy of assembly. Another 10% of reads provided clear evidence of alternative genomic conformations due to apparent rearrangements across large repeats. Quantitative assessment of these repeat-spanning read pairs revealed that all large repeat arrangements are present at appreciable frequencies in vivo, although not always in equimolar amounts. The observed stoichiometric differences for some arrangements are inconsistent with a predominant master circular structure for the mitochondrial genome of M. guttatus IM62. Finally, because IM62 contains a cryptic cytoplasmic male sterility (CMS) system, an in silico search for potential CMS genes was undertaken. The three chimeric open reading frames (ORFs) identified in this study, in addition to the previously identified ORFs upstream of the nad6 gene, are the most likely CMS candidate genes in this line

    Search for associated Higgs boson production using like charge dilepton events in p(p)over-bar collisions at root s=1.96 TeV

    We present a search for associated Higgs boson production in the process p (p) over bar -> W/ZH -> l(+/-)l'(+/-) + X in ee, e mu, and mu mu final states. The search is based on data collected by the D0 experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider at root s = 1.96 TeV corresponding to 5.3 fb(-1) of integrated luminosity. We require two isolated leptons (electrons or muons) with the same electric charge and additional kinematic requirements. No significant excess above background is observed, and we set 95% C. L. observed (expected) upper limits on ratio of the production cross section to the standard model prediction of 6.4 (7.3) for a Higgs boson mass of 165 GeV and 13.5 (19.8) for a mass of 115 GeV

    Evidence for Parton kT Effects in High pT Particle Production

    Inclusive pizero and direct-photon cross sections in the kinematic range 3.5 < pT < 12 GeV/c with central rapidities are presented for 530 and 800 GeV/c proton beams and a 515 GeV/c pi- beam incident on beryllium targets. Current Next-to-Leading-Order perturbative QCD calculations fail to adequately describe the data for conventional choices of scales. Kinematic distributions from these hard scattering events provide evidence that the interacting partons carry significant initial-state parton transverse momentum (kT). Incorporating these kT effects phenomenologically greatly improves the agreement between calculations and the measured cross sections.Comment: 11 pages including 6 pages of figures with caption
