Coexistence of Pairing Tendencies and Ferromagnetism in a Doped Two-Orbital Hubbard Model on Two-Leg Ladders
Using the Density Matrix Renormalization Group and two-leg ladders, we
investigate an electronic two-orbital Hubbard model including plaquette
diagonal hopping amplitudes. Our goal is to search for regimes where charges
added to the undoped state form pairs, presumably a precursor of a
superconducting state. For the electronic density , i.e. the undoped
limit, our investigations show a robust antiferromagnetic ground
state, as in previous investigations. Doping away from and for large
values of the Hund coupling , a ferromagnetic region is found to be stable.
Moreover, when the interorbital on-site Hubbard repulsion is smaller than the
Hund coupling, i.e. for in the standard notation of multiorbital Hubbard
models, our results indicate the coexistence of pairing tendencies and
ferromagnetism close to . These results are compatible with previous
investigations using one dimensional systems. Although further research is
needed to clarify if the range of couplings used here is of relevance for real
materials, such as superconducting heavy fermions or pnictides, our theoretical
results address a possible mechanism for pairing that may be active in the
presence of short-range ferromagnetic fluctuations.Comment: 8 pages, 4 Fig
1RXS J180408.9-342058: an ultra compact X-ray binary candidate with a transient jet
We present a detailed NIR/optical/UV study of the transient low mass X-ray
binary 1RXS J180408.9-342058 performed during its 2015 outburst, aimed at
determining the nature of its companion star. We obtained three optical spectra
at the 2.1 m San Pedro Martir Observatory telescope (Mexico). We performed
optical and NIR photometric observations with both the REM telescope and the
New Technology Telescope (NTT) in La Silla. We obtained optical and UV
observations from the Swift archive. Finally, we performed optical polarimetry
of the source by using the EFOSC2 instrument mounted on the NTT. The optical
spectrum of the source is almost featureless since the hydrogen and He I
emissions lines, typically observed in LMXBs, are not detected. Similarly,
carbon and oxygen lines are neither observed. We marginally detect the He II
4686 AA emission line, suggesting the presence of helium in the accretion disc.
No significant optical polarisation level was observed. The lack of hydrogen
and He I emission lines in the spectrum implies that the companion is likely
not a main sequence star. Driven by the tentative detection of the He II 4686
AA emission line, we suggest that the system could harbour a helium white
dwarf. If this is the case, 1RXS J180408.9-342058 would be an ultra-compact
X-ray binary. By combining an estimate of the mass accretion rate together with
evolutionary tracks for a He white dwarf, we obtain a tentative orbital period
of ~ 40 min. On the other hand, we also built the NIR-optical-UV spectral
energy distribution (SED) of the source at two different epochs. One SED was
gathered when the source was in the soft X-ray state, and it is consistent with
the presence of a single thermal component. The second SED, obtained when the
source was in the hard X-ray state, shows a thermal component together with a
tail in the NIR, likely indicating the presence of a (transient) jet.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, 4 tables. Accepted for publication in Astronomy &

Atomic Interferometer with Amplitude Gratings of Light and its Applications to Atom Based Tests of the Equivalence Principle
We have developed a matter wave interferometer based on the diffraction of
atoms from effective absorption gratings of light. In a setup with cold
rubidium atoms in an atomic fountain the interferometer has been used to carry
out tests of the equivalence principle on an atomic basis. The gravitational
acceleration of the two isotopes 85Rb and 87Rb was compared, yielding a
difference Dg/g =(1.2 +-1.7)x10^{-7}. We also perform a differential free fall
measurement of atoms in two different hyperfine states, and obtained a result
of Dg/g =(0.4 +-1.2)x10^{-7}.Comment: 4 Pages, 4 figures, accepted for Physical Review Letter
Integrable theories and loop spaces: fundamentals, applications and new developments
We review our proposal to generalize the standard two-dimensional flatness
construction of Lax-Zakharov-Shabat to relativistic field theories in d+1
dimensions. The fundamentals from the theory of connections on loop spaces are
presented and clarified. These ideas are exposed using mathematical tools
familiar to physicists. We exhibit recent and new results that relate the
locality of the loop space curvature to the diffeomorphism invariance of the
loop space holonomy. These result are used to show that the holonomy is abelian
if the holonomy is diffeomorphism invariant.
These results justify in part and set the limitations of the local
implementations of the approach which has been worked out in the last decade.
We highlight very interesting applications like the construction and the
solution of an integrable four dimensional field theory with Hopf solitons, and
new integrability conditions which generalize BPS equations to systems such as
Skyrme theories. Applications of these ideas leading to new constructions are
implemented in theories that admit volume preserving diffeomorphisms of the
target space as symmetries. Applications to physically relevant systems like
Yang Mills theories are summarized. We also discuss other possibilities that
have not yet been explored.Comment: 64 pages, 8 figure
Non-dissipative Thermal Transport and Magnetothermal Effect for the Spin-1/2 Heisenberg Chain
Anomalous magnetothermal effects are discussed in the spin-1/2 Heisenberg
chain. The energy current is related to one of the non-trivial conserved
quantities underlying integrability and therefore both the diagonal and off
diagonal dynamical correlations of spin and energy current diverge. The
energy-energy and spin-energy current correlations at finite temperatures are
exactly calculated by a lattice path integral formulation. The low-temperature
behavior of the thermomagnetic (magnetic Seebeck) coefficient is also
discussed. Due to effects of strong correlations, we observe the magnetic
Seebeck coefficient changes sign at certain interaction strengths and magnetic
fields.Comment: 4 pages, references added, typos corrected, Conference proceedings of

Fermi surface renormalization in Hubbard ladders
We derive the one-loop renormalization equations for the shift in the
Fermi-wavevectors for one-dimensional interacting models with four Fermi-points
(two left and two right movers) and two Fermi velocities v_1 and v_2. We find
the shift to be proportional to (v_1-v_2)U^2, where U is the Hubbard-U. Our
results apply to the Hubbard ladder and to the t_1-t_2 Hubbard model. The
Fermi-sea with fewer particles tends to empty. The stability of a saddle point
due to shifts of the Fermi-energy and the shift of the Fermi-wavevector at the
Mott-Hubbard transition are discussed.Comment: 5 pages, 4 Postscript figure
Photometry of the Oort Cloud comet C/2009 P1(Garradd): pre-perihelion observations at 5.7 and 2.5 AU
The aim of this paper is to contribute to the characterization of the general properties of the Long Period Comets (LPCs) family, and in particular to report on the dust environment of comet C/2009 P1 (Garradd).
The comet was observed at two epochs pre-perihelion, at ~6 AU and at ~2.5 AU: broad-band images have been used to investigate its coma morphology and properties and to model the dust production rate.
Comet C/2009 P1 (Garradd) is one of the most active and âdust producingâ LPCs ever observed, even at the large heliocentric distance rh~6 AU. Its coma presents a complex morphology, with subtle structures underlying the classical fan-shaped tail, and, at rh~2.5 AU, also jet-like structures and spiralling outflows. In the reference aperture of radius Ï=5°Ă104 km, the R-AfÏ is 3693±156 cm and 6368±412 cm, in August 2010 (rh~6 AU) and July 2011 (rh~2.5 AU), respectively. The application of a first order photometric model, under realistic assumptions on grain geometric albedo, power-law dust size distribution, phase darkening function and grain dust outflow velocity, yielded a measure of the dust production rate for the two epochs of observation of Qd=7.27Ă102 kg/s and Qd=1.37Ă103 kg/s, respectively, for a reference outflow dust velocity of vsmall=25 m/s for small (0.1â10 ”m) grains and vlarge=1 m/s for large (10 ”mâ1 cm) grains.
These results suggest that comet Garradd is one of the most active minor bodies observed in recent years, highly contributing to the continuous replenishment of the Interplanetary Dust Complex also in the outer Solar System, and pose important constraints on the mechanism(s) driving the cometary activity at large heliocentric distances
