“Stranger Things”: o futuro do regionalismo latino-americano

    Get PDF
Latin American attempts at regionalism have been pursued through different waves. The last wave, post-liberal or post-hegemonic regionalism, is fading without having even peaked. Building on contributions from International Political Economy, European Studies and International Relations, the paper aims at answering two main questions: how can we characterize the current paths of regional integration in Latin America considering the trends of the last ten years? What can we expect of Latin American regionalism over the next decade? We address three premises –membership of regional organizations, institutional design and the role of the United States– lying under the large volume of regionalist research in Latin America. We then test them vis-à-vis the latter developments in the aftermath of the collapse of post-liberal regionalism. Also, addressing these three premises we attempt to make some predictions about possible forthcoming regional scenarios. We explore two possible developments –a short-term scenario and a longer-term scenario–, mainly but not exclusively drawn from the three premises studied in the paper. Maybe we are about to witness some “stranger things” in the future of Latin American regionalism, opening up to different realities, different explanations and alternatives.

Physical Treatments and Propolis Extract to Enhance Quality Attributes of Fresh-Cut Mixed Vegetables

The impact of individual and combined application of propolis extract (PE) plus ultrasound (ULT) or thermal treatment (TT) on the microbiological, nutritional, physicochemical and sensory quality of fresh-cut mixed vegetables for soup (celery, leek and butternut squash) stored at 5C was studied. The use of PE slightly reduced microbial growth, inhibited the activity of browning related enzymes and improved quality attributes during refrigerated storage. Moreover, PE was effective to reduce ascorbic acid losses in the product maintaining its nutritional quality. TT greatly lowered the initial microbial load (1.7–2.2 log units) and also reduced microbial growth on mixed vegetables extending its microbiological shelf-life to 5 days. Furthermore, TT inactivated browning enzymes improving visual quality; however, ascorbic acid degradation adversely affected nutritional quality. Meanwhile, ULT caused a significant microbial inactivation, reduced browning enzyme activity and also the inhibitory effect on polyphenoloxidase enzyme was enhanced by combining ULT with PE. Practical Applications: The use of natural agents, as propolis extract, along with physical treatments to preserve the quality of fresh-cut mixed vegetables for soup might be an interesting option to address the concerns of the consumer about the use of synthetic chemical antimicrobials potentially harmful for health.Fil: Alvarez, María Victoria. Marine chemical contaminants – support to harmonized MSFD reporting: Substances considered for MSFD descriptor 8

    Get PDF
The 2018 reporting on updates of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) Articles 8, 9 and 10 will be supported by web forms to aid completion of the XML files by Member States. It is planned to use, wherever possible, drop-down lists to facilitate data entry, thereby also helping to ensure consistency in the data entered. This report outlines a process to prepare a list of contaminants for use in 2018 MSFD D8 reporting (as drop-down lists in the reporting web forms). This list assists in using a harmonized nomenclature for the unambiguous identification of the substances, thereby facilitating consistency in the data entry. Additionally, the compilation of the list allows for comparisons between Member States and marine regions that may support the processes of selection of relevant contaminants for D8 assessments.JRC.D.2-Water and Marine Resource

Potential chemical contaminants in the marine environment: An overview of main contaminant lists

    Get PDF
The identification of priority chemicals is a challenge for regulators, managers and researchers all around the world. This report compiles in a single list more than 2700 substances (or groups of substances) coming from main lists of chemicals compiled by relevant global conventions, European legislation, European regional seas and dedicated research work. Although not all of these contaminants are of concern for the marine environment or for a particular MSFD region/sub-region/Member State, this general overview should help understand the different options and support further developments for the monitoring and assessment of chemical pollution in European marine waters. Discussion and collaboration between the different stakeholders and expert groups will be necessary for an efficient way towards an equally high level of protection for healthy and productive oceans. This compilation also assist in using a harmonized nomenclature for the unambiguous identification of the substances of concern. It may also serve as a basis for discussions about procedures for grouping/combining substances at European level. This is expected to facilitate consistency in the upcoming 2018 MSFD data reporting.JRC.D.2-Water and Marine Resource

Fluoroscopy-guided balloon dilation of a proximal urethral stricture caused by a urethral membrane in a female cat

    Get PDF
Case summary: A proximal urethral stricture was diagnosed by retrograde urethrogram in a 2-year-old female neutered cat, which was referred following a 2-month history of stranguria, pollakiuria and urinary incontinence. Cystoscopic examination confirmed the presence of a severe narrowing of the proximal urethra near to the bladder neck, consisting of a membrane arising from the urethral mucosa. Fluoroscopy-guided balloon dilation was performed. Twelve months after the procedure, the cat did not show any recurrence of clinical signs. Relevance and novel information: To our knowledge, this is the first report of a proximal urethral stricture in a cat. Management by fluoroscopy-guided balloon dilation proved to be a successful and minimally invasive option with an excellent outcome

A suspended time: Everyday Life and becoming feminist of Argentine women exiled during the last military dictatorship (1976-1983)

During the ‘60s and ‘70s, numerous political organizations emerged in Argentina that openly questioned the capitalist social order and put into practice various strategies to generate an alternative to that social order. In these organizations, the participation of women was very relevant, both because of the number of militants and the level of hierarchy reached by some of them. Although their political organizations had no claims related to the modification of hierarchical gender relations, the militant women questioned, in practice, the place assigned to them by the patriarchal society (Oberti, 2015). As we can see in the testimonies compiled for this work, the daily life of exiled argentine women was strongly shaken by issues related to gender. On the other hand, we will see that, in some cases, in exile there was an approach to feminist theories and political perspectives, once their organizations had been fiercely repressed and disarticulated. The disappearance or ruptures of couples, motherhood, among others, were very deep “feminine” experiences of life and in front of which many had to position themselves, for the first time, in conditions of exile. This work aims to account for this trajectory from the analysis of oral testimonies of Argentine women who were exiled.Fil: Alvarez, Victoria. During the period of State Terrorism in Argentina, women held in clandestine detention centers had specific experiences linked to sexual violence. After their captivity, survivors suffered the invisibility of these practices in investigations, in various narratives and, until very recently, in reparatory policies. This work, based on the analysis of testimonies, aims to examine women’s experiences in Argentine clandestine detention centers from a gender perspective. The study pays particular attention to the possibilities that survivors had to narrate their experiences and to be listened in different spheres and scenes from the first complaints filed during the dictatorship, in Argentina and abroad, to the present. We will focus on the analysis of the changes in social frames for listening and what causes them.Fil: Alvarez, Victoria. Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas; Argentina.
