Tourism is one of the most affected sector during the COVID-19 pandemic all over the world. Quarantine decisions are the leading measures taken in practice to reduce possible negative consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic. There is limited work in the literature on how to make the right quarantine decisions in a pandemic. Therefore, the aim of this study is to propose the use of social network analysis (SNA) based on tourism data to make the right quarantine decisions in the COVID-19 pandemic. A case study on quarantine decision is conducted based on data obtained from Turkish Statistical Institute to show how to perform SNA. Household domestic tourism survey is used as input data for SNA. The most critical region among 12 regions in Türkiye is Istanbul to decrease possible negative affect of COVID-19 pandemic on the tourism sector. © 2022 The Author

The effect of ripening periods on physical, chemical and mechanical properties of service tree fruits (Sorbus domestica L.) were determined. The geometric mean diameter, fruit mass, volume, surface area and fruit density of service tree fruits decreased with increase ripening periods, while, bulk density increased with ripening periods. L*, a*, b*, Chroma decreased with increase ripening periods, while hue angle increased with ripening periods respectively. The friction coefficients of service tree fruits with increase ripening periods were lower for laminate than the other surfaces. The total soluble solid content and total acidity of service tree fruits decreased at ripening period. Titratable acidity was higher in physiological maturity as compared to ripening periods, and pH values of service tree fruits decreased with ripening periods.  To post-harvest technological applications of the service tree fruits, the physical, mechanical and chemical properties of service tree fruits must be considered

Measuring self-selectivity via generalized Condorcet rules

Ankara : The Department of Economics, İhsan Doğramacı Bilkent University, 2011.Thesis (Master's) -- Bilkent University, 2011.Includes bibliographical references leaves 29.In this thesis, we introduce a method to measure self-selectivity of social choice functions. Due to Koray [2000], a neutral and unanimous social choice function is known to be universally self-selective if and only if it is dictatorial. Therefore, in this study, we confine our set of test social choice functions to particular singleton-valued refinements of generalized Condorcet rules. We show that there are some non-dictatorial self-selective social choice functions. Moreover, we define the notion of self-selectivity degree which enables us to compare social choice functions according to the strength of their selfselectivities. We conclude that the family of generalized Condorcet functions is an appropriate set of test social choice functions when we localize the notion of self-selectivity.Altuntaş, AçelyaM.S

Performance evaluation, especially financial performance evaluation is extremely important for firms to maintain their existance, to cope with sustainable competition conditions, and to enhance their operations. Financial performance evaluation is assumed to be unbiased and objective as it contains net and easily interpretable indicators. In this study, the relationship between financial performance indicators and the factors affecting the performances were analyzed by logistic regression analysis. Financial performance indicators, which have great importance for the enterprise, have been analyzed in terms of profitability, productivity, market performance and growth, liquidity ratios, financial structure ratios, operating rates, the ratio of exports in sales and capital intensity. Clustering Analysis (CA) was examined how many clusters could be collected by using performance indicators and performance levels were determined by using the number of clusters resulting from Logistic Regression Analysis (LRA) and CA. Consequently, Logistics Regression Analysis (LRA) is used to identify the factors that impact performance on the basis of low, medium, and high based on the number of clusters generated by CA. In the analysis, the effects of financial structure ratio, liquidity ratio, activity rate, capital density, export rate and market share, which are expected to affect performance, were examined. As a result, it is seen that the power of the firms to pay their short-term debts, the amount of borrowings in proportion to their assets and equity, affect the performance levels of their size and export rates within the sector. AbstractThe rapidly globalizing world trade requires longer supply chains with higher attention on the environmental effects of logistics activities. Latest international conventions related with environmental regulations reinforce governments and corporations to adhere to environmental protection precautions. An effort to decrease the negative environmental effects of logistics activity is the geographical concentration of logistics companies which are called logistics centers. This study aims to provide a green industrial service buying approach for the industrial customers of logistics centers. The study combines green purchasing literature with previousely developed environmental performance indicators (EPIs) and develops a green industrial buying model for logistics centers. The model provides a framework for potential residents of a logistics center and supports their industrial buying processes. The model also serves as an input for green industrial service design in a logistics center

Aim: Spontaneous rupture of an arachnoid cyst resulting in a subdural hygroma is an infrequent event. We report an adult patient who had no previous neuroimaging and had acute onset headache, dizziness, and nausea unrelated to trauma. Case: A 67-year-old male patient was brought to the emergency service complaints of sudden onset of dizziness, headache, and vomiting while working in the garden. He described ongoing nausea and headache localized to the frontal region. Brain CT imaging was planned for the patient whose nausea and dizziness worsened while his symptomatic treatment continued. In the brain CT, a large hypodense extracerebral collection was detected in the area starting from the middle fossa in the right cerebral hemisphere and extending to the convexity level in the frontoparietal region. The patient was consulted in the neurosurgery unit. Surgical intervention was not considered, and the patient was admitted to the neurosurgery service for treatment. Due to the asymptomatic course in the service follow-ups, he was discharged with outpatient clinic control recommendations. Conclusion: This case illustrates the importance of recognizing the possibility of spontaneous rupture of an arachnoid cyst. This phenomenon should be considered as a differential diagnosis in patients without head trauma. Although it is rare, being aware of such a case is helpful in preventing possible bad outcomes.

Analysis of Unethical Behaviors in Social Networks: An Application in the Medical Sector

    Get PDF
AbstractThe analysis of ethical problems in the organizational life requires considering individual, contextual, and issue-related factors, as well as the social relationships of actors, who are embedded into the system. Focusing on this last dimension, the current study aims to explore the nature of unethical behavior from a social network perspective and attempts to investigate how such behaviors spread among the actors in Turkish medical sector, which has become strictly competitive after the structural health reforms. Since the relationship between physicians and drug companies’ sales representatives is usually seen at the paramount of unethical relations in the medical sector, this link was chosen as a focal dyad and two surveys were simultaneously conducted on physicians and sales representatives. The type and structure of relations were analyzed to reveal the nature of unethical behaviors in terms of frequency of interaction, trust, power inequalities, common values, and information sharing. The findings of study revealed that unethical behavior is not only a problem of focal dyad between physicians and sales representatives and showed an epidemic structure that might affect the whole system. Managers should consider the disseminating structure of unethical conduct in order to prevent such behavior in different segments and functional units of organizations. Strategies that eliminate unethical routes within the organizational channels should be explored and adopted

Aim: In this study, we aimed to compare clinical outcomes of multidisciplinary patients who were admitted by the decision of emergency physicians (EPs) with that of patients, who were admitted after the consensus decision of consultant physicians in terms of number of consultation, emergency department (ED) and hospital length of stay (LOS), need for intensive care unit (ICU), transfer status after hospitalization and outcome. Material and Methods: This was a retrospective observational study. The multidisciplinary medical patients who were above 18 years of age and need hospitalization were included. The patients were divided into two groups: Group I consisted of those who were hospitalized by the decision of EPs, and Group II consisted of patients who were hospitalized after a consensus reached between consulting physicians. Mann-Whitney U test and Chi-square tests were used for comparisons. Results: Of the 1143 hospitalized patients. 204 (17.85%) were in Group I and 939 (82.15%) were in Group II. Group I patients needed more consultations in the ED, had higher ED-LOS, need more ICU, and were more commonly transferred to other departments after hospitalization. As the number of consultations increases, the ED-LOS increases accordingly in both groups. Although Group I patients seem to be more commonly transferred (p = 0.001), overall hospitalLOS between the two groups was similar (p = 0.1 43). The transferred patients in Group I had a higher hospital-LOS compared to non-transferred patients (p = 0.001). Discussion: The authorization of EPs to hospitalize multidisciplinary patients to the most related department seems to be feasible because overall hospital-LOS does not change

Aim: This retrospective study aimed to investigate the combined accuracy of appendix diameter, C reactive protein, and Alvarado score in classifying patients with negative appendectomy and acute appendicitis. Material and Methods: This descriptive observational cohort study research was conducted at the Emergency Department of a Training and Research Hospital between November 2017 and April 2019. We included the data of appendicitis cases aged under 18 years in this retrospective study and gathered data on patients` demographics, preoperative laboratory values, signs, symptoms, and final pathological diagnosis, retrospectively. Then, cases were divided into acute appendicitis or negative appendectomy groups according to formal pathology reports. Results: The final study population consisted of 60 patients; the negative appendectomy rate was 25%. The diagnostic accuracy of the multivariate model`s involving CRP, Alvarado score, and appendix diameter was 93.3%, with a sensitivity and specificity of 93.3% for identifying acute appendicitis (+LR: 14 and -LR: 0.07). Applying the model could have prevented 93.3% of negative appendectomy cases (25% to 1.7%) from undergoing unnecessary surgery in our cohort. Conclusion: In conclusion, CRP, Alvarado score, or appendix diameter should not be used individually to diagnose AA in children. However, combining these variables can increase the accuracy of acute appendicitis diagnosis and may provide a significant reduction in negative appendectomy rates.
